Nacimiento y reinado del Príncipe de Paz

¹Pero no habrá más lobreguez para la que estaba en angustia^a. Como en tiempos pasados Él trató con desprecio a la tierra de Zabulón y a la tierra de Neftalí^b, pero después la hará gloriosa por el camino del mar al otro lado del Jordán, Galilea de los gentiles²^c.

2 ¹El pueblo que andaba en tinieblasha visto gran luz;a los que habitaban en tierra de sombra de muerte,la luz ha resplandecido sobre ellos^a.3 Multiplicaste la nación^a,aumentaste¹ su² alegría^b;se alegran en tu presenciacomo con la alegría de³ la cosecha,como se regocijan los hombres cuando se reparten el botín^c.4 Porque tú quebrarás el yugo de su carga, el báculo de sus hombros^a,y la vara de su opresor^b, como en la batalla¹ de Madián^c.5 Porque toda bota que calza el guerrero en el fragor de la batalla,y el manto revolcado en sangre, serán para quemar, combustible para el fuego.6 Porque un niño nos ha nacido^a, un hijo nos ha sido dado^b,y la soberanía¹^c reposará² sobre sus hombros^d;y se llamará su nombre Admirable Consejero^e, Dios Poderoso^f,Padre Eterno^g, Príncipe de Paz^h.7 El aumento de su soberanía¹ y de la paz no tendrán fin^asobre el trono de David y sobre su reino^b,para afianzarlo y sostenerlo con el derecho y la justicia^cdesde entonces y para siempre.El celo del SEÑOR de los ejércitos hará esto^d.

Ira de Dios contra Israel

8 El Señor envía mensaje¹ contra Jacob,y cae sobre Israel.9 Y todo el pueblo lo sabe,es decir, Efraín y los habitantes de Samaria^a,los que con arrogancia y altivez de corazón^b afirman¹:10 Los ladrillos han caído,pero con piedras labradas reedificaremos^a;los sicómoros han sido cortados,pero con cedros los reemplazaremos.11 Por tanto el SEÑOR levanta adversarios de Rezín^a contra ellos,e incita a sus enemigos,12 los arameos en el oriente y los filisteos en el occidente^a,que devoran a Israel^b a boca llena¹.Con todo eso no se aparta su ira,y aún está su mano extendida^c.

13 Pero el pueblo no ha vuelto a Aquel que los hirió^a,no han buscado al SEÑOR de los ejércitos^b.14 El SEÑOR, pues, corta de Israel la cabeza y la cola,la hoja de palmera y el junco^a en un mismo día^b.15 El anciano y venerable es la cabeza^a,y el profeta que enseña la mentira, es la cola^b.16 Porque los que guían a este pueblo lo extravían;y los guiados por ellos son confundidos¹^a.17 Por eso no se complace el Señor en sus jóvenes^a,ni se compadece^b de sus huérfanos ni de sus viudas;porque todos ellos son impíos y malhechores^c,y toda boca habla necedades^d.Con todo eso no se aparta su ira,y aún está su mano extendida^e.

18 Porque arde como fuego la impiedad,zarzas y espinos consume,y enciende la espesura del bosque;como remolino suben en columna de humo^a.19 Por el furor del SEÑOR de los ejércitos^a es quemada la tierra^b,y el pueblo es como combustible para el fuego^c;el hombre no perdona a su hermano^d.20 Cortan¹ de un tajo lo que está a la derecha, pero aún tienen hambre^a,y comen² lo que está a la izquierda, pero no se sacian;cada cual come la carne de su propio brazo³^b.21 Manasés devora a Efraín, y Efraín a Manasés,y ambos están contra Judá^a.Con todo eso no se ha apartado su ira,y aún está su mano extendida^b.

¹But there will be no more ^agloom for her who was in anguish. In earlier times He ^btreated the ^cland of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He will make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of the Jordan, Galilee of the ²Gentiles.

2 ¹^aThe people who walk in darknessWill see a great light;Those who live in a dark land,The light will shine on them.3 ^aYou will multiply the nation,You ^bwill ¹increase ²their joy;They will rejoice in Your presenceAs with the joy ³of harvest,As people ^crejoice when they divide the spoils.4 For ^aYou will break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders,The rod of their ^boppressor, as ¹at the battle of ^cMidian.5 For every boot of the marching warrior in the roar of battle,And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.6 For a ^aChild will be born to us, a ^bSon will be given to us;And the ^cgovernment will ¹rest ^don His shoulders;And His name will be called ^eWonderful Counselor, ^fMighty God,Eternal ^gFather, Prince of ^hPeace.7 There will be ^ano end to the increase of His government or of peaceOn the ^bthrone of David and over ¹his kingdom,To establish it and to uphold it with ^cjustice and righteousnessFrom then on and forevermore.^dThe zeal of the LORD of armies will accomplish this.

God’s Anger with Israel’s Arrogance

8 The Lord sends a ¹message against Jacob,And it falls on Israel.9 And all the people know it,That is, ^aEphraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,Asserting in pride and in ^barrogance of heart:10 “The bricks have fallen down,But we will ^arebuild with smooth stones;The sycamores have been cut down,But we will replace them with cedars.”11 Therefore the LORD raises superior adversaries against them from ^aRezinAnd provokes their enemies,12 The Arameans from the east and the ^aPhilistines from the west;And they ^bdevour Israel with ¹gaping jaws.^cIn spite of all this, His anger does not turn away,And His hand is still stretched out.

13 Yet the people ^ado not turn back to Him who struck them,Nor do they ^bseek the LORD of armies.14 So the LORD cuts off ^ahead and tail from Israel,Both palm branch and bulrush ^bin a single day.15 The head is ^athe elder and esteemed man,And the prophet who teaches ^bfalsehood is the tail.16 ^aFor those who guide this people are leading them astray;And those who are guided by them are ¹confused.17 Therefore the Lord does ^anot rejoice over their young men,^bNor does He have compassion on their ¹orphans or their widows;For every one of them is ^cgodless and an ^devildoer,And every ^emouth is speaking foolishness.^fIn spite of all this, His anger does not turn away,And His hand is still stretched out.

18 ^aFor wickedness burns like a fire;It consumes briars and thorns;It also sets the thickets of the forest aflameAnd they roll upward in a column of smoke.19 By the ^awrath of the LORD of armies the ^bland is burned,And the ^cpeople are like fuel for the fire;No ^done spares his brother.20 ¹They devour what is on the right hand but are still ^ahungry,And ²they eat what is on the left hand, but they are not satisfied;Each of them eats the ^bflesh of his own arm.21 Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh,^aAnd together they are against Judah.^bIn spite of all this, His anger does not turn awayAnd His hand is still stretched out.

But there will be no more ^agloom for her who was in anguish for with judgment comes the promise of salvation. In earlier times He ^btreated the ^cland of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He will make them honored by the presence of the Messiah, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles.

2 ^aThe people who walk in spiritual darkness¹Will see a great Light;Those who live in the dark land,The Light will shine on them. Is 42:6; Matt 4:15, 163 ^aYou O God will increase the nation,You will ^bmultiply their joy;They will rejoice before YouLike the joy and jubilation of the harvest,As ^cmen rejoice when they divide the spoil of victory.4 For ^aYou will break the yoke of Israel’s burden and the staff (goad) on their shoulders,The rod of their ^boppressor, as at the ¹battle of ^cMidian. Judg 7:8-225 For every boot of the marching warrior in the battle tumult,And every soldier’s garment rolled in blood, will be used for burning, fuel for the fire.6 For to us a ^aChild shall be born, to us a ^bSon shall be given;And the ^cgovernment shall be ^dupon His shoulder,And His name shall be called ^eWonderful Counselor, ^fMighty God,Everlasting ^gFather, Prince of ^hPeace. God’s Anger with Israel’s Arrogance

8 The Lord sends a word (message) against Jacob,And it falls on Israel the ten northern tribes, the kingdom of Ephraim.9 And all the people know it,That is, ¹^aEphraim and the inhabitants of Samaria its capital,Who say in pride and ^barrogance of heart:10 “The bricks have fallen down,But we will ^arebuild all the better with ashlar (hewed stones) ;The sycamores have been cut down,But we will replace them with expensive cedars.”11 Therefore the LORD raises against Ephraim adversaries from ^aRezin king of AramAnd spurs their enemies on,12 The Arameans on the east and the ^aPhilistines on the west;And they ^bdevour Israel with gaping jaws.^cIn spite of all this, God’s anger does not turn awayBut His hand is still stretched out in judgment.

13 Yet the people ^ado not turn back in repentance to Him who struck them,Nor do they ^bseek the LORD of hosts as their most essential need.14 Therefore the LORD cuts off ^ahead and tail the highest and the lowest from Israel,Both the high palm branch and the low bulrush ^bin one day.15 ^aThe elderly and honorable man, he is the head;And the prophet who teaches ^blies, he is the tail.16 ^aFor those who lead this people are causing them to go astray;And those who are led astray by them are swallowed up.17 Therefore the Lord does ^anot rejoice over their young men,^bNor does He have compassion on their fatherless or their widows;For every one of them is ^cgodless and an ^devildoer,And every ^emouth is speaking foolishness.^fIn spite of all this, God’s anger does not turn awayBut His hand is still stretched out in judgment.

18 ^aFor wickedness burns like a fire;It consumes briars and thorns,It even sets the forest thickets ablaze;And it swirls upward in a column of smoke.19 By the ^awrath of the LORD of hosts the ^bland is burned up,And the ^cpeople are like fuel for the fire;No ^dman spares his brother.20 They slice off in discord what is on the right hand but are still ^ahungry,And they eat what is on the left hand but they are not satisfied;Each eats the ^bflesh of his own arm.21 The tribe of Manasseh devours the tribe of his brother Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh,^aAnd together they are against Judah (the southern kingdom, the house of David) .^bIn spite of all this, God’s anger does not turn awayBut His hand is still stretched out in judgment.
