Todo aquel que cree que Jesús es el Cristo^1a, es nacido^2b de Dios; y todo aquel que ama al Padre³, ama al que ha nacido⁴ de Él^c. 2 En esto sabemos^a que amamos a los hijos de Dios^b: cuando amamos a Dios y guardamos¹ sus mandamientos. 3 Porque este es el amor de Dios^a: que guardemos sus mandamientos^b, y sus mandamientos no son gravosos^c. 4 Porque todo lo que es nacido¹ de Dios^a vence al mundo^b; y esta es la victoria que ha vencido al mundo: nuestra fe. 5 ¿Y quién es el que vence al mundo, sino el que cree que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios^a?

6 Este es el que vino mediante agua y sangre^a, Jesucristo; nosolo con¹ agua, sino con² agua y con³ sangre. Y el Espíritu es el que da testimonio^b, porque el Espíritu es la verdad. 7 Porque tres son los que dan testimonio^a en el cielo: el Padre, el Verbo y el Espíritu Santo, y estos tres son uno. Y tres son los que dan testimonio en la tierra¹: 8 el Espíritu, el agua y la sangre, y los tres concuerdan¹. 9 Si recibimos el testimonio de los hombres^a, mayor es el testimonio de Dios; porque este es el testimonio de Dios: que Él ha dado testimonio acerca de su Hijo^b. 10 El que cree en el Hijo de Dios tiene el testimonio en sí mismo^a; el que no cree a Dios, ha hecho a Dios¹ mentiroso^b, porque no ha creído en el testimonio que Dios ha dado respecto a su Hijo. 11 Y el testimonio eseste: que Dios nos ha dado vida eterna^a, y esta vida está en su Hijo^b. 12 El que tiene al Hijo tiene la vida^a, y el que no tiene al Hijo de Dios, no tiene la vida.

13 Estas cosas^a os he escrito a vosotros que creéis en el nombre del Hijo de Dios^b, para que sepáis que tenéis vida eterna^c. 14 Y esta es la confianza que tenemos delante de¹ Él^a, que si pedimos cualquier cosa conforme a su voluntad, Él nos oye^b. 15 Y si sabemos que Él nos oye en cualquier cosa que pidamos, sabemos que tenemos las peticiones que le hemos hecho^a. 16 Si alguno ve a su hermano cometiendo un pecado¹ que no lleva a la muerte, pedirá, y por él Dios dará vida^a a los que cometen pecado que no lleva a la muerte². Hay un pecado que lleva a la muerte^3b; yo no digo que deba pedir porese^c. 17 Toda injusticia es pecado^a, y hay pecado que no lleva a la muerte^1b.

18 Sabemos^a que todo el que ha nacido de Dios, no peca^b; sino que aquel que nació¹ de Dios lo guarda^c y el maligno^d no lo toca^e. 19 Sabemos^a que somos de Dios^b, y que todo el mundo yace bajo el poder del maligno^1c. 20 Y sabemos^a que el Hijo de Dios ha venido^b y nos ha dado entendimiento^c a fin de que conozcamos al que es verdadero^d; y nosotros estamos en aquel que es verdadero^e, en su Hijo Jesucristo. Este es el verdadero Dios^f y la vida eterna^g. 21 Hijos^1a, guardaos de los ídolos^b.

^aEveryone who believes that Jesus is the ¹Christ has been ^bborn of God, and everyone who loves the ²Father ^cloves the child born of Him. 2 ^aBy this we know that ^bwe love the children of God, when we love God and ¹follow His commandments. 3 For ^athis is the love of God, that we ^bkeep His commandments; and ^cHis commandments are not burdensome. 4 For ¹whoever has been ^aborn of God ^bovercomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.

5 Who is the one who overcomes the world, but the one who ^abelieves that Jesus is the Son of God? 6 This is the One who came ^aby water and blood, Jesus Christ; not ¹with the water only, but ²with the water and ³with the blood. It is ^bthe Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are ^athree that testify: 8 ¹the Spirit and the water and the blood; and the three are ²in agreement. 9 ^aIf we receive the testimony of people, the testimony of God is greater; for the testimony of God is this, that ^bHe has testified concerning His Son. 10 The one who believes in the Son of God ^ahas the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has ^bmade Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning His Son. 11 And the testimony is this, that God has given us ^aeternal life, and ^bthis life is in His Son. 12 ^aThe one who has the Son has the life; the one who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.

13 ^aThese things I have written to you who ^bbelieve in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have ^ceternal life. 14 This is ^athe confidence which we have ¹before Him, that, ^bif we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, ^awe know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.

16 If anyone sees his brother or sister ¹committing a sin not leading to death, ^ahe shall ask and ²God will, for him, give life to those who commit sin not leading to death. ^bThere is sin leading to death; ^cI am not saying that he should ask about that. 17 ^aAll unrighteousness is sin, and ^bthere is sin not leading to death.

18 ^aWe know that ^bno one who has been born of God ¹sins; but He who was born of God ^ckeeps him, and ^dthe evil one does not ^etouch him. 19 ^aWe know that ^bwe are of God, and that ^cthe whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 20 And ^awe know that ^bthe Son of God has come, and has ^cgiven us understanding so that we may know ^dHim who is true; and we ^eare in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. ^fThis is the true God and ^geternal life.

21 ^aLittle children, guard yourselves from ^bidols.

21 ^aLittle children, guard yourselves from ^bidols.

^aEveryone who believes with a deep, abiding trust in the fact that Jesus is the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed) is ^bborn of God that is, reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, and set apart for His purpose, and everyone who loves the Father also ^cloves ¹the child born of Him. 2 ^aBy this we know without any doubt that ^bwe love the children of God: expressing that love when we love God and obey His commandments. 3 For the true love of God ^ais this: that we habitually ^bkeep His commandments and remain focused on His precepts. And ^cHis commandments and His precepts are not difficult to obey. 4 For ¹everyone ^aborn of God is ^bvictorious and overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has conquered and overcome the world—our continuing, persistent faith in Jesus the Son of God.

5 Who is the one who is victorious and overcomes the world? It is the one who ^abelieves and recognizes the fact that Jesus is the Son of God. 6 This is He who came ^athrough water and blood His baptism and death, Jesus Christ—not by the water only, but by the water and the blood. It is ^bthe Holy Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. He is the essence and origin of truth itself. 7 For there are ^athree witnesses: 8 ¹the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three are in agreement their testimony is perfectly consistent. 9 ^aIf we accept as we do the testimony of men that is, if we are willing to take the sworn statements of fallible humans as evidence, the testimony of God is greater far more authoritative; for this is the testimony of God, that ^bHe has testified regarding His Son. 10 The one who believes in the Son of God who adheres to, trusts in, and relies confidently on Him as Savior ^ahas the testimony within himself because he can speak authoritatively about Christ from his own personal experience. The one who does not believe God in this way has ^bmade Him out to be a liar, because he has not believed in the evidence that God has given regarding His Son. 11 And the testimony is this: God has given us ^aeternal life we already possess it, and ^bthis life is in His Son resulting in our spiritual completeness, and eternal companionship with Him. 12 ^aHe who has the Son by accepting Him as Lord and Savior has the life that is eternal; he who does not have the Son of God by personal faith does not have the life.

13 ^aThese things I have written to you who ^bbelieve in the name of the Son of God which represents all that Jesus Christ is and does, so that you will know with settled and absolute knowledge that you already have ^ceternal life. 14 This is ^athe remarkable degree of confidence which we as believers are entitled to have before Him: that ^1bif we ask anything according to His will, that is, consistent with His plan and purpose He hears us. 15 And if we know for a fact, as indeed we do that He hears and listens to us in whatever we ask, ^awe also know with settled and absolute knowledge that we have granted to us the requests which we have asked from Him.

16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin that does not lead to death, ^ahe will pray and ask on the believer’s behalf and God will for him give life to those whose sin is not leading to death. ^bThere is a sin that leads to death; ^cI do not say that one should pray for this kind of sin. 17 ^aAll wrongdoing is sin, and ^bthere is sin that does not lead to death one can repent of it and be forgiven.

18 ^aWe know with confidence that ^banyone born of God does not habitually sin; but He (Jesus) who was born of God carefully ^ckeeps and protects him, and ^dthe evil one does not ^etouch him. 19 ^aWe know for a fact that ^bwe are of God, and ^cthe whole world around us lies in the power of the evil one opposing God and His precepts. 20 And ^awe have seen and know by personal experience that ^bthe Son of God has actually come to this world, and has ^cgiven us understanding and insight so that we may progressively and personally know ^dHim who is true; and we ^eare in Him who is true—in His Son Jesus Christ. ^fThis is the true God and ^geternal life.

21 ^aLittle children (believers, dear ones) , guard yourselves from ^bidols— false teachings, moral compromises, and anything that would take God’s place in your heart.
