Pero Jesús se fue al Monte de los Olivos^a. 2 Y al amanecer, vino otra vez al templo, y todo el pueblo venía a Él; y sentándose, les enseñaba^a. 3 Los escribas y los fariseos trajeron* a una mujer sorprendida en adulterio, y poniéndola en medio, 4 le dijeron*: Maestro, esta mujer ha sido sorprendida en el acto mismo del adulterio. 5 Y en la ley, Moisés nos ordenó apedrear a esta clase de mujeres^a; ¿tú, pues, qué dices? 6 Decían esto, probándole^a, para tener de qué acusarle^b. Pero Jesús se inclinó y con el dedo escribía en la tierra. 7 Pero como insistían en preguntarle, Jesús se enderezó^a y les dijo: El que de vosotros esté sin pecado, sea el primero^b en tirarle una piedra^c. 8 E inclinándose de nuevo, escribía en la tierra. 9 Pero al oír ellos esto, se fueron retirando uno a uno comenzando por los de mayor edad, y dejaron solo a Jesús y a la mujer que estaba en medio. 10 Enderezándose^a Jesús, le dijo: Mujer, ¿dónde están ellos? ¿Ninguno te ha condenado? 11 Y ella respondió: Ninguno, Señor. Entonces Jesús le dijo: Yo tampoco te condeno^a. Vete; desde ahora no peques más^b.

12 Jesús les habló otra vez, diciendo: Yo soy la luz del mundo^a; el que me sigue no andará en tinieblas, sino que tendrá la luz^b de la vida. 13 Entonces los fariseos le dijeron: Tú das testimonio de ti mismo; tu testimonio no es verdadero^1a. 14 Respondió Jesús y les dijo: Aunque yo doy testimonio^a de mí mismo, mi testimonio es verdadero, porque yo sé de dónde he venido y adónde voy^b; pero vosotros no sabéis de dónde vengo^c ni adónde voy. 15 Vosotros juzgáis según la carne^1a; yo no juzgo a nadie^b. 16 Pero si yo juzgo, mi juicio es verdadero; porque no soy yo solo, sino yo y el Padre que¹ me envió^a. 17 Aun en vuestra ley está escrito que el testimonio de dos hombres es verdadero^1a. 18 Yo soy el que doy testimonio de mí mismo, y el Padre que me envió da testimonio de mí^a. 19 Entonces le decían: ¿Dónde está tu Padre? Jesús respondió: No me conocéis a mí ni a mi Padre. Si me conocierais a mí, conoceríais también a mi Padre^a. 20 Estas palabras las pronunció en el lugar del tesoro^a, cuando enseñaba en el templo^b; y nadie le prendió, porque todavía no había llegado su hora^c.

21 Entonces les dijo de nuevo: Yo me voy, y me buscaréis^a, y moriréis en vuestro pecado^b; adonde yo voy, vosotros no podéis ir. 22 Por eso los judíos^a decían: ¿Acaso se va a suicidar, puesto que dice: «Adonde yo voy, vosotros no podéis ir^b»? 23 Y Jesús les decía: Vosotros sois de abajo, yo soy de arriba^a; vosotros sois de este mundo^b, yo no soy de este mundo^c. 24 Por eso os dije que moriréis en vuestros pecados; porque si no creéis que yo soy^1a, moriréis en vuestros pecados^b. 25 Entonces le decían: ¿Tú quién eres? Jesús les dijo: ¿Qué os he estado diciendo desde el principio¹? 26 Tengo mucho que decir y juzgar de vosotros, pero el que me envió es veraz^a; y yo, las cosas que oí de Él,estas digo al mundo^b. 27 No comprendieron que les hablaba del Padre. 28 Por eso Jesús dijo: Cuando levantéis al Hijo del Hombre^a, entonces sabréis que yo soy^1b y que no hago nada por mi cuenta^c, sino que hablo estas cosas como el Padre me enseñó. 29 Y El que me envió está conmigo; no me ha dejado¹ solo^a, porque yo siempre hago lo que le agrada^b. 30 Al hablar estas cosas, muchos creyeron en Él^a.

31 Entonces Jesús decía a los judíos que habían creído en Él: Si vosotros permanecéis en mi palabra^a, verdaderamente sois mis discípulos^b; 32 y conoceréis la verdad^a, y la verdad os hará libres^b. 33 Ellos le contestaron: Somos descendientes de Abraham^a y nunca hemos sido esclavos de nadie. ¿Cómo dices tú: «Seréis libres»? 34 Jesús les respondió: En verdad, en verdad os digo que todo el que comete pecado es esclavo del pecado^a; 35 y el esclavo no queda en la casa para siempre^a; el hijo sí permanece para siempre^b. 36 Así que, si el Hijo os hace libres^a, seréis realmente libres. 37 Sé que sois descendientes de Abraham^a; y sin embargo, procuráis matarme^b porque mi palabra no tiene cabida en vosotros¹. 38 Yo hablo lo que he visto con mi Padre¹; vosotros, entonces, hacéis también lo que oísteis de vuestro padre^a. 39 Ellos le contestaron, y le dijeron: Abraham es nuestro padre^a. Jesús les dijo*: Si sois hijos de Abraham^b, haced las obras de Abraham. 40 Pero ahora procuráis matarme^a, a mí¹ que os he dicho la verdad que oí de Dios^b. Esto no lo hizo Abraham. 41 Vosotros hacéis las obras de vuestro padre^a. Ellos le dijeron: Nosotros no nacimos de fornicación; tenemos un Padre, es decir, Dios^b. 42 Jesús les dijo: Si Dios fuera vuestro Padre, me amaríais^a, porque yo salí de Dios y vine de Él^b, pues no he venido por mi propia iniciativa^c, sino que Él¹ me envió^d. 43 ¿Por qué no entendéis lo que digo^1a? Porque no podéis oír mi palabra^b. 44 Sois de vuestro padre el diablo y queréis hacer los deseos de vuestro padre^a. Él fue un homicida desde el principio^b, y no se ha mantenido en la verdad porque no hay verdad en él. Cuando habla mentira¹, habla de su propia naturaleza^c, porque es mentiroso^d y el padre de la mentira². 45 Pero porque yo digo la verdad^a, no me creéis. 46 ¿Quién de vosotros me prueba que tengo pecado? Y si digo verdad^a, ¿por qué vosotros no me creéis? 47 El que es de Dios escucha las palabras de Dios; por eso vosotros no escucháis, porque no sois de Dios^a.

48 Contestaron los judíos^a, y le dijeron: ¿No decimos con razón que tú eres samaritano^b y que tienes un demonio^c? 49 Jesús respondió: Yo no tengo ningún demonio^a, sino que honro a mi Padre, y vosotros me deshonráis a mí. 50 Pero yo no busco mi gloria^a; hay Uno que la busca, y juzga. 51 En verdad, en verdad os digo que si alguno guarda mi palabra^a, no verá jamás la muerte^b. 52 Los judíos^a le dijeron: Ahora sí sabemos que tienes un demonio^b. Abraham murió, y también los profetas, y tú dices: «Si alguno guarda mi palabra^c no probará jamás la muerte^d». 53 ¿Eres tú acaso mayor que nuestro padre^a Abraham que murió? Los profetas también murieron; ¿quién crees que eres?¹ 54 Jesús respondió: Si yo mismo me glorifico^a, mi gloria no es nada; es mi Padre el que me glorifica^b, de quien vosotros decís: «Él es nuestro Dios». 55 Y vosotros no le habéis conocido^a, pero yo le conozco; y si digo que no le conozco seré un mentiroso como vosotros^b; pero sí le conozco^c y guardo su palabra^d. 56 Vuestro padre Abraham^a se regocijó esperando ver¹ mi día; y lo vio y se alegró^b. 57 Por esto los judíos^a le dijeron: Aún no tienes cincuenta años, ¿y has visto a Abraham? 58 Jesús les dijo: En verdad, en verdad os digo: antes que Abraham naciera¹, yo soy^a. 59 Entonces tomaron piedras para tirárselas^a, pero Jesús se ocultó^1b y salió del templo².

But Jesus went to ^athe Mount of Olives. 2 And early in the morning He came again into the temple area, and all the people were coming to Him; and ^aHe sat down and began teaching them. 3 Now the scribes and the Pharisees *brought a woman caught in the act of adultery, and after placing her in the center of the courtyard, 4 they *said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the very act of committing adultery. 5 Now in the Law, ^aMoses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?” 6 Now they were saying this to ^atest Him, ^bso that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. 7 When they persisted in asking Him, ^aHe straightened up and said to them, “^bHe who is without sin among you, let him be the ^cfirst to throw a stone at her.” 8 And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9 Now when they heard this, they began leaving, one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman where she was, in the center of the courtyard. 10 And ^astraightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” 11 She said, “No one, ¹Lord.” And Jesus said, “^aI do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on do not ^bsin any longer.”]]

12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “^aI am the Light of the world; ^bthe one who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” 13 So the Pharisees said to Him, “^aYou are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not ¹true.” 14 Jesus answered and said to them, “^aEven if I am testifying about Myself, My testimony is ¹true, because I know ^bwhere I came from and where I am going; but ^cyou do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 ^aYou judge ¹according to the flesh; ^bI am not judging anyone. 16 But even ^aif I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me. 17 Even in ^ayour Law it has been written that the testimony of ^btwo people is ¹true. 18 I am He who testifies about Myself, and ^athe Father who sent Me testifies about Me.” 19 So they were saying to Him, “Where is Your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father; ^aif you knew Me, you would know My Father also.” 20 These words He spoke ¹in ^athe treasury, as ^bHe taught in the temple area; and no one arrested Him, because ^cHis hour had not yet come.

21 Then He said again to them, “I am going away, and ^ayou will look for Me, and ^bwill die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So ^athe Jews were saying, “Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, ‘^bWhere I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 And He was saying to them, “^aYou are from below, I am from above; ^byou are of this world, ^cI am not of this world. 24 Therefore I said to you that you ^awill die in your sins; for unless you believe that ^1bI am, ^cyou will die in your sins.” 25 Then they were saying to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus said to them, “¹What have I even been saying to you from the beginning? 26 I have many things to say and to judge regarding you, but ^aHe who sent Me is true; and ^bthe things which I heard from Him, these I say to the world.” 27 They did not realize that He was speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you ^alift up the Son of Man, then you will know that ^1bI am, and ^cI do nothing ²on My own, but I say these things as the Father instructed Me. 29 And He who sent Me is with Me; ^aHe ¹has not left Me alone, for ^bI always do the things that are pleasing to Him.” 30 As He said these things, ^amany came to believe in Him.

31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “^aIf you continue in My word, then you are truly My ^bdisciples; 32 and ^ayou will know the truth, and ^bthe truth will set you free.” 33 They answered Him, “^aWe are Abraham’s descendants and have never been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly I say to you, ^aeveryone who commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 Now ^athe slave does not remain in the house forever; ^bthe son does remain forever. 36 So if the Son ^asets you free, you really will be free. 37 I know that you are ^aAbraham’s descendants; yet ^byou are seeking to kill Me, because My word ¹has no place in you. 38 I speak of the things which I have seen ¹with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from ^ayour father.”

39 They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is ^aour father.” Jesus *said to them, “^bIf you are Abraham’s children, do the deeds of Abraham. 40 But as it is, ^ayou are seeking to kill Me, a Man who has ^btold you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do. 41 You are doing the deeds of ^ayour father.” They said to Him, “We were not born as a result of sexual immorality; ^bwe have one Father: God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, ^ayou would love Me, ^bfor I came forth from God and am here; for I have ^cnot even come ¹on My own, but ^2dHe sent Me. 43 Why do you not understand ^1awhat I am saying? It is because you cannot ^blisten to My word. 44 ^aYou are of ^byour father the devil, and ^cyou want to do the desires of your father. ^dHe was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because ^ethere is no truth in him. Whenever he tells ¹a lie, he ^fspeaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of ²lies. 45 But because ^aI say the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If ^aI speak truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 ^aThe one who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.”

48 ^aThe Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not rightly say that You are a ^bSamaritan, and You ^chave a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not ^ahave a demon; on the contrary, I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. 50 But ^aI am not seeking My glory; there is One who seeks it, and judges. 51 Truly, truly I say to you, if anyone ^afollows My word, he will never ^bsee death.” 52 ^aThe Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You ^bhave a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets as well; and yet You say, ‘If anyone ^cfollows My word, he will never ^dtaste of death.’ 53 You ^aare not greater than our father Abraham, who died, are You? The prophets died too. Whom do You make Yourself out to be?” 54 Jesus answered, “^aIf I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; ^bit is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’; 55 and ^ayou have not come to know Him, ^bbut I know Him. And if I say that I do not know Him, I will be ^ca liar like you; ^dbut I do know Him, and I ^efollow His word. 56 ^aYour father Abraham was ^boverjoyed that he would see My day, and he saw it and rejoiced.” 57 ^aSo the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham ¹was born, ^2aI am.” 59 Therefore they ^apicked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus ^bhid Himself and left the temple grounds.

So what do You say to do with her—what is Your sentence?” Deut 22:22-24 6 They said this to ^atest Him, ^bhoping that they would have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and began writing on the ground with His finger. 7 However, when they persisted in questioning Him, ^aHe straightened up and said, “^bHe who is without any sin among you, let him be the ^cfirst to throw a stone at her.” Deut 17:7 8 Then He stooped down again and started writing on the ground. 9 They listened to His reply, and they began to go out one by one, starting with the oldest ones, until He was left alone, with the woman standing there before Him in the center of the court. 10 ^aStraightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” 11 She answered, “No one, Lord!” And Jesus said, “^aI do not condemn you either. Go. From now on ^bsin no more.”]

12 Once more Jesus addressed the crowd. He said, “^1aI am the Light of the world. ^bHe who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” 13 Then the Pharisees told Him, “^aYou are testifying on Your own behalf; Your testimony is not valid.” 14 Jesus replied, “^aEven if I do testify on My own behalf, My testimony is valid, because I know ^bwhere I came from and where I am going; but ^cyou do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 ^aYou judge according to ¹human standards just by what you see. ^bI do not judge anyone. 16 But even ^aif I do judge, My judgment is true and My decision is right; for I am not alone in making it, but I and the Father who sent Me make the same judgment. 17 Even in ^ayour own law it is written that the testimony of ^btwo persons is true valid and admissible. Deut 19:15 18 I am One of the Two who testifies about Myself, and ^aMy Father who sent Me testifies about Me.” 19 Then the Pharisees said to Him, “Where is this Father of Yours?” Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father; ^aif you knew Me, you would know My Father also.” 20 Jesus said these things in ^athe treasury, as ^bHe taught in the temple courtyard; and no one seized Him, because ^cHis time had not yet come.

21 Then He said again to them, “I am going away, and ^ayou will look for Me, and you ^bwill die unforgiven and condemned in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So ^athe Jews were asking among themselves, “Will He kill Himself? Is that why He says, ‘^bWhere I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 He said to them, “^aYou are from below, I am from above; ^byou are of this world, ^cI am not of this world. 24 That is why I told you that you ^awill die unforgiven and condemned in your sins; for if you do not believe that ^bI am the One I claim to be, ^cyou will die in your sins.” Ex 3:14; Matt 24:5; Mark 13:6; Luke 21:8 25 So they said to Him, “Who are You anyway?” Jesus replied, “What have I been saying to you from the beginning? 26 I have many things to say and judge concerning you, but ^aHe who sent Me is true; and I say to the world only ^bthe things that I have heard from Him.” 27 They did not realize or have the spiritual insight to understand that He was speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you ^alift up the Son of Man on the cross, you will know then without any doubt that ^bI am He, and that ^cI do nothing on My own authority, but I say these things just as My Father taught Me. 29 And He who sent Me is always with Me; ^aHe has not left Me alone, because ^bI always do what pleases Him.” 30 As He said these things, ^1amany believed in Him.

31 So Jesus was saying to the Jews who had believed Him, “^aIf you abide in My word continually obeying My teachings and living in accordance with them, then you are truly My ^bdisciples. 32 And ^ayou will know the truth regarding salvation, and ^bthe truth will set you free from the penalty of sin.” 33 They answered Him, “^aWe are Abraham’s descendants and have never been enslaved to anyone. ¹What do You mean by saying, ‘You will be set free’?”

34 Jesus answered, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, ^aeveryone who practices sin habitually is a slave of sin. 35 Now ^athe slave does not remain in a household forever; ^bthe son of the master does remain forever. 36 So if the Son ^amakes you free, then you are unquestionably free. 37 I know that you are ^aAbraham’s descendants; yet ^byou plan to kill Me, because My word has no place to grow in you and it makes no change in your heart. 38 I tell the things that I have seen at My Father’s side in His very presence; so you also do the things that you heard from ^ayour father.”

39 They answered, “Abraham is ^aour father.” Jesus said to them, “^bIf you are truly Abraham’s children, then do the works of Abraham and follow his example. 40 But as it is, ^ayou want to kill Me, a Man who has ^btold you the truth, which I heard from God. This is not the way Abraham acted. 41 You are doing the works of ^ayour own father.” They said to Him, “We are not illegitimate children; ^bwe have one spiritual Father: God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father but He is not, ^ayou would love and recognize Me, ^bfor I came from God out of His very presence and have arrived here. For I have ^cnot even come on My own initiative as self-appointed, but ^dHe is the One who sent Me. 43 Why do you misunderstand ^awhat I am saying? It is because your spiritual ears are deaf and you are unable to ^bhear the truth of My word. 44 ^aYou are of ^byour father the devil, and it is ^cyour will to practice the desires which are characteristic of your father. ^dHe was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because ^ethere is no truth in him. When he lies, he ^fspeaks what is natural to him, for he is a liar and the father of lies and half-truths. 45 But because ^aI speak the truth, you do not believe Me and continue in your unbelief. 46 Which one of you has proof and convicts Me of sin? If ^aI speak truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 ^aWhoever is of God and belongs to Him hears the truth of God’s words; for this reason you do not hear them: because you are not of God and you are not in fellowship with Him.”

48 ^aThe Jews answered Him, “Are we not right when we say You are a ^1bSamaritan and that You ^chave a demon and are under its power?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not ^ahave a demon. On the contrary, I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. 50 However, ^aI am not seeking glory for Myself. There is One who seeks glory for Me and judges those who dishonor Me. 51 I assure you and most solemnly say to you, if anyone ^akeeps My word by living in accordance with My message he will indeed never, ever ^bsee and experience ¹death.” 52 ^aThe Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You ^bhave a demon and are under its power. Abraham died, and also the prophets; yet You say, ‘If anyone ^ckeeps My word, he will never, ever ^dtaste of death.’ 53 ^aAre You greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died too! Whom do You make Yourself out to be?” 54 Jesus answered, “^aIf I glorify Myself, My glory is worth nothing. ^bIt is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ 55 Yet ^ayou do not know Him, ^bbut I know Him fully. If I said I did not know Him, I would be ^ca liar like you. ^dBut I do know Him and ^ekeep His word. 56 ^aYour father Abraham greatly ^brejoiced to see My day (My incarnation) . ¹He saw it and was delighted.” Heb 11:13 57 ^aThen the Jews said to Him, “You are not even fifty years old, and You claim to have seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus replied, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, before Abraham was born, ^1aI Am.” Ex 3:14 59 So they ^apicked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus ^bconcealed Himself and left the temple.

21 Then He said again to them, “I go away, and ^ayou will seek Me, and ^bwill die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So ^athe Jews were saying, “Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, ‘^bWhere I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 And He was saying to them, “^aYou are from below, I am from above; ^byou are of this world, ^cI am not of this world. 24 Therefore I said to you that you ^awill die in your sins; for unless you believe that ^1bI am He, ^cyou will die in your sins.” 25 So they were saying to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus said to them, “¹What have I been saying to you from the beginning? 26 I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but ^aHe who sent Me is true; and ^bthe things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world.” 27 They did not realize that He had been speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you ^alift up the Son of Man, then you will know that ^1bI am He, and ^cI do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me. 29 And He who sent Me is with Me; ^aHe ¹has not left Me alone, for ^bI always do the things that are pleasing to Him.” 30 As He spoke these things, ^amany came to believe in Him.

31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “^aIf you continue in My word, then you are truly ^bdisciples of Mine; 32 and ^ayou will know the truth, and ^bthe truth will make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “^aWe are Abraham’s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, ^aeveryone who commits sin is the slave of sin. 35 ^aThe slave does not remain in the house forever; ^bthe son does remain forever. 36 So if the Son ^amakes you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are ^aAbraham’s descendants; yet ^byou seek to kill Me, because My word ¹has no place in you. 38 I speak the things which I have seen ¹with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from ^ayour father.”

39 They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is ^aour father.” Jesus *said to them, “^bIf you are Abraham’s children, do the deeds of Abraham. 40 But as it is, ^ayou are seeking to kill Me, a man who has ^btold you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do. 41 You are doing the deeds of ^ayour father.” They said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; ^bwe have one Father: God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, ^ayou would love Me, ^bfor I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have ^cnot even come on My own initiative, but ^1dHe sent Me. 43 Why do you not understand ^1awhat I am saying? It is because you cannot ^bhear My word. 44 ^aYou are of ^byour father the devil, and ^cyou want to do the desires of your father. ^dHe was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because ^ethere is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks ¹a lie, he ^fspeaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of ²lies. 45 But because ^aI speak the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If ^aI speak truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 ^aHe who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.”

48 ^aThe Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not say rightly that You are a ^bSamaritan and ^chave a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not ^ahave a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. 50 But ^aI do not seek My glory; there is One who seeks and judges. 51 Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone ^akeeps My word he will never ^bsee death.” 52 ^aThe Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You ^bhave a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets also; and You say, ‘If anyone ^ckeeps My word, he will never ^dtaste of death.’ 53 Surely You ^aare not greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died too; whom do You make Yourself out to be?” 54 Jesus answered, “^aIf I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; ^bit is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’; 55 and ^ayou have not come to know Him, ^bbut I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I will be ^ca liar like you, ^dbut I do know Him and ^ekeep His word. 56 ^aYour father Abraham ^brejoiced ¹to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” 57 ^aSo the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham ¹was born, ^aI am.” 59 Therefore they ^apicked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus ^1bhid Himself and went out of the temple.
