Cuando llegó el mes séptimo, y los hijos de Israel estaban ya en las ciudades, el pueblo se reunió como un solo hombre en Jerusalén^a. 2 Entonces Jesúa^a, hijo de Josadac, con sus hermanos los sacerdotes, y Zorobabel^b, hijo de Salatiel^c, con sus hermanos, se levantaron y edificaron el altar del Dios de Israel^d, para ofrecer holocaustos sobre él, como está escrito en la ley de Moisés, hombre de Dios^e. 3 Y asentaron el altar sobre su base, porque estaban aterrorizados¹ a causa de los pueblos de aquellas² tierras^a; y sobre él ofrecieron holocaustos al SEÑOR, los holocaustos de la mañana y de la tarde^b. 4 Y celebraron la fiesta de los tabernáculos^1a como está escrito^b, con el número diario de holocaustos, conforme a lo prescrito para cada día^c; 5 y después ofrecieron el holocausto continuo^a, y los de las lunas nuevas, los de todas las fiestas señaladas del SEÑOR que habían sido consagradas, y los de todos aquellos que ofrecían una ofrenda voluntaria al SEÑOR^b. 6 Desde el primer día del mes séptimo comenzaron a ofrecer holocaustos al SEÑOR, pero los cimientos del templo del SEÑOR no se habían echado todavía. 7 Entonces dieron dinero a los canteros y a los carpinteros, y alimento, bebida y aceite a los sidonios y a los tirios^a para que trajeran madera de cedro desde el Líbano por mar hasta¹ Jope^b, conforme al permiso que tenían de Ciro, rey de Persia^c. 8 Y en el segundo año de su llegada a la casa de Dios en Jerusalén, en el mes segundo, Zorobabel, hijo de Salatiel, y Jesúa, hijo de Josadac, y los demás de sus hermanos los sacerdotes y los levitas^a, y todos los que habían venido de la cautividad a Jerusalén, comenzaron la obra y designaron a los levitas de veinte años arriba para dirigir la obra de la casa del SEÑOR^b. 9 Entonces Jesúa con sus hijos y sus hermanos, Cadmiel con sus hijos, los hijos de Judá^1a y los hijos de Henadad con sus hijos y sus hermanos los levitas, se presentaron todos a una para dirigir a los obreros en la casa de Dios. 10 Cuando los albañiles terminaron de echar los cimientos del templo del SEÑOR^a, se presentaron los sacerdotes¹ en sus vestiduras, con trompetas, y los levitas, hijos de Asaf, con címbalos, para alabar al SEÑOR conforme a las instrucciones² del rey David de Israel^b. 11 Y cantaban, alabando y dando gracias al SEÑOR^a: Porque Él es bueno, porque para siempre es su misericordia sobre Israel^b. Now when the seventh month came, and ^athe sons of Israel were in the cities, the people gathered together as one person to Jerusalem. 2 Then ^aJeshua the son of Jozadak and his brothers the priests, and ^bZerubbabel the son ^cof Shealtiel and his brothers, rose up and ^dbuilt the altar of the God of Israel to offer burnt offerings on it, ^eas it is written in the Law of Moses, the man of God. 3 So they set up the altar on its foundation, because ^1athey were terrified of the peoples of the lands; and they ^boffered burnt offerings on it to the LORD, burnt offerings morning and evening. 4 They also celebrated the ^aFeast of ¹Booths, ^bas it is written, and offered ²the prescribed number of burnt offerings daily, ^caccording to the ordinance, ³as each day required; 5 and afterward there was a ^acontinual burnt offering, also ^bfor the new moons and ^cfor all the appointed festivals of the LORD that were consecrated, and from everyone who offered a ¹voluntary offering to the LORD. 6 From the first day of the seventh month they began to offer burnt offerings to the LORD, but the foundation of the temple of the LORD had not been laid. 7 Then they gave money to the masons and carpenters, and ^afood, drink, and oil to the Sidonians and the Tyrians ^bto bring cedar wood from Lebanon to the sea at ^cJoppa, according to the permission they had ¹from ^dCyrus king of Persia.

8 Now in the second year of their coming to the house of God at Jerusalem, in the second month, ^aZerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the rest of their brothers the priests and the Levites, and all who came from the captivity to Jerusalem, began the work and ^bappointed the Levites who were twenty years old and upward to oversee the work of the house of the LORD. 9 Then ^aJeshua with his sons and brothers stood united with Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of ¹Judah and the sons of Henadad with their sons and brothers the Levites, to oversee the workmen in the temple of God.

10 Now when the builders had ^alaid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, ¹the priests stood in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise the LORD ^baccording to the ²directions of King David of Israel. 11 And ^athey sang, praising and giving thanks to the LORD, saying, “^bFor He is good, for His favor is upon Israel forever.” And all the people shouted with a great shout of joy when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid. 12 Yet many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers’ households, ^athe old men who had seen the first ¹temple, wept with a loud voice when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, while many shouted aloud for joy, 13 so that the people could not distinguish the sound of the shout of joy from the sound of the weeping of the people, because the people were shouting with a loud shout, and the sound was heard far away.

8 In the second year of their coming to God’s house at Jerusalem, in the second month, ^aZerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak began the work, with the rest of their brothers—the priests and Levites and all who came to Jerusalem from the captivity. They ^bappointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to oversee the work of the house of the LORD. 9 Then ^aJeshua with his sons and brothers stood united with Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of Judah and the sons of Henadad with their sons and brothers the Levites, to oversee the workmen in the house of God.

10 Now when the builders had ^alaid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, the priests stood in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with their cymbals, to praise the LORD ^bin accordance with the directions of David king of Israel. 11 ^aThey sang responsively, praising and giving thanks to the LORD, saying, “^bFor He is good, for His lovingkindness (mercy) toward Israel endures forever.” And all the people shouted with a great shout when they praised the LORD because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid. 12 But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers’ households, ^athe old men who had seen the first house (temple) , wept with a loud voice when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, while many shouted aloud for joy, 13 so that the people could not distinguish the sound of the shout of joy from the sound of the weeping of the people, for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the sound was heard far away.
