8 Y se levantó sobre Egipto un nuevo rey que no había conocido a José^a; 9 y dijo a su pueblo: He aquí, el pueblo de los hijos de Israel es más numeroso y más fuerte que nosotros^a. 10 Procedamos, pues, astutamente con él no sea que se multiplique^a, y en caso de guerra¹, se una también con los que nos odian y pelee contra nosotros y se vaya² de la tierra. 11 Entonces pusieron sobre ellos capataces¹ para oprimirlos^a con duros trabajos^2b. Y edificaron para Faraón las ciudades de almacenaje^c, Pitón y Ramsés^d. 12 Pero cuanto más los oprimían, más se multiplicaban^a y más se extendían¹, de manera que los egipcios llegaron a temer a los hijos de Israel. 13 Los egipcios, pues, obligaron a los hijos de Israel a trabajar duramente^a, 14 y les amargaron la vida con dura servidumbre^a en hacer barro¹ y ladrillos y en toda clase de trabajo del campo; todos sus trabajos se los imponían² con rigor.

15 Y el rey de Egipto habló a las parteras de las hebreas, una de las cuales se llamaba Sifra, y la otra Puá, 16 y les dijo: Cuando estéis asistiendo a las hebreas a dar a luz, y las veáis sobre el lecho del parto¹, si es un hijo, le daréis muerte^a, pero si es una hija, entonces vivirá. 17 Pero las parteras temían¹ a Dios^a, y no hicieron como el rey de Egipto les había mandado^2b, sino que dejaron con vida a los niños. 18 El rey de Egipto hizo llamar a las parteras y les dijo: ¿Por qué habéis hecho esto, y habéis dejado con vida a los niños? 19 Respondieron las parteras a Faraón: Porque las mujeres hebreas no son como las egipcias, pues son robustas y dan a luz antes que la partera llegue a ellas. 20 Y Dios favoreció^a a las parteras; y el pueblo se multiplicó^b y llegó a ser muy poderoso¹. 21 Y sucedió que por haber las parteras temido¹ a Dios^a, Él prosperó sus² familias^3b. 22 Entonces Faraón ordenó a todo su pueblo, diciendo: Todo hijo que nazca^1a lo echaréis al Nilo^b, y a toda hija la dejaréis con vida.

8 Now a new ^aking arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. 9 And ^ahe said to his people, “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are ¹too many and too mighty for us. 10 Come, let us ^adeal ¹shrewdly with them, otherwise they will multiply, and ²in the event of war, they will also join those who hate us, and fight against us and ³depart from the land.” 11 So they appointed ^ataskmasters over them to oppress them with ^1bhard labor. And they built for Pharaoh ^cstorage cities, Pithom and ^dRaamses. 12 But the more they oppressed them, ^athe more they multiplied and the more they ¹spread out, so that they dreaded the sons of Israel. 13 The Egyptians ¹used violence to compel the sons of Israel ^ato labor; 14 and they made ^atheir lives bitter with hard labor in mortar and bricks and at all kinds of labor in the field, all their labors which they violently had them perform as slaves.

15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom ¹was named Shiphrah, and the other ²was named Puah; 16 and he said, “When you are helping the Hebrew women to give birth and see them upon the birthstool, ^aif it is a son, then you shall put him to death; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.” 17 But the midwives ^1afeared God, and ^bdid not do as the king of Egypt had ²commanded them, but let the boys live. 18 So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and let the boys live?” 19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife ¹can get to them.” 20 So ^aGod was good to the midwives, and ^bthe people multiplied, and became very ¹mighty. 21 And because the midwives ^1afeared God, He ^2bestablished ³households for them. 22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “^aEvery son who is born, ¹you are to throw into ^bthe Nile, but every daughter, you are to keep alive.”

And the sons of Israel built Pithom and ^cRaamses as ^dstorage cities for Pharaoh. 12 But the more the Egyptians oppressed them, ^athe more they multiplied and expanded, so that the Egyptians dreaded and were exasperated by the Israelites. 13 And the Egyptians made the Israelites ^aserve rigorously forcing them into severe slavery. 14 They made ^atheir lives bitter with hard labor in mortar, brick, and all kinds of field work. All their labor was harsh and severe.

15 Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah (beauty) and the other named Puah (splendor) , 16 “When you act as midwives to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, ^aif it is a son, you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, she shall live.” 17 But the midwives ^afeared God with profound reverence and ^bdid not do as the king of Egypt commanded, but they let the boy babies live. 18 So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and allowed the boy babies to live?” 19 The midwives answered Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth quickly and their babies are born before the midwife can get to them.” 20 So ^aGod was good to the midwives, and ^bthe people of Israel multiplied and became very strong. 21 And because the midwives ^afeared God with profound reverence, ¹He ^bestablished families and households for them. 22 Then ¹Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “^aEvery son who is born to the Hebrews must be thrown into ^bthe Nile, but every daughter you shall keep alive.”
