Después nos volvimos y partimos hacia el desierto por el camino del mar Rojo^1a, como el SEÑOR me había mandado², y por muchos días dimos vuelta al³ monte Seir^b. 2 Y el SEÑOR me habló, diciendo: 3 «Bastantes vueltas habéis dado ya alrededor de este monte. Volveos ahora hacia el norte, 4 y da orden al pueblo, diciendo: “Vais a pasar por el territorio de vuestros hermanos^a, los hijos de Esaú que habitan en Seir^b, y os tendrán miedo^c. Así que tened mucho cuidado; 5 no los provoquéis¹, porque nada de su tierra os daré, ni siquiera la huella de un pie², porque a Esaú he dado el monte Seir por posesión^a. 6 Les compraréis con dinero los alimentos para comer, y también con dinero compraréis de ellos agua para beber. 7 Pues el SEÑOR tu Dios te ha bendecido en todo lo que has hecho¹; Él ha conocido tu peregrinar² a través de este inmenso desierto^a. Por³ cuarenta años^b el SEÑOR tu Dios ha estado contigo; nada te ha faltado”».

8 Pasamos, pues, de largo a nuestros hermanos, los hijos de Esaú que habitan en Seir, lejos del camino de Arabá^a, lejos de Elat y de Ezión-geber^b. Y nos volvimos, y pasamos por el camino del desierto de Moab. 9 Entonces el SEÑOR me dijo: «No molestes a Moab, ni los provoques a la guerra, porque no te daré nada de su tierra por posesión, pues he dado Ar^a a los hijos de Lot^b por posesión. 10 (Antes habitaron allí los emitas^a, un pueblo tan grande, numeroso y alto como los anaceos. 11 Como los anaceos, ellos también son considerados gigantes^1a, pero los moabitas los llaman emitas. 12 Los horeos habitaron antes en Seir, pero los hijos de Esaú los desalojaron y los destruyeron delante de ellos, y se establecieron¹ en su lugar^a, tal como Israel hizo con la tierra que el SEÑOR les dio en posesión^b.) 13 Levantaos ahora, y cruzad el torrente de Zered». Y cruzamos el torrente de Zered. 14 Y el tiempo que nos llevó para venir¹ de Cades-barnea, hasta que cruzamos el torrente de Zered, fue de treinta y ocho años^a; hasta que pereció toda la generación de los hombres de guerra de en medio del campamento^b, como el SEÑOR les había jurado^c. 15 Además, la mano del SEÑOR fue contra ellos, para destruirlos de en medio del campamento, hasta que todos perecieron^a.

16 Y aconteció que cuando todos los hombres de guerra habían ya perecido de entre el pueblo^a, 17 el SEÑOR me habló, diciendo: 18 «Tú cruzarás hoy por Ar la frontera de Moab^a. 19 Y cuando llegues frente a los hijos de Amón^a, no los molestes ni los provoques, porque no te daré nada de la tierra de los hijos de Amón en posesión, pues se la he dado a los hijos de Lot por heredad^b». 20 (Es también conocida como la tierra de los gigantes^1a, porque antiguamente habitaban en ella gigantes², a los que los amonitas llaman zomzomeos, 21 pueblo grande, numeroso y alto como los anaceos, pero que el SEÑOR destruyó delante de ellos. Y los amonitas los desalojaron y se establecieron en su lugar, 22 tal como Dios hizo con¹ los hijos de Esaú, que habitan en Seir^a, cuando destruyó a los horeos delante de ellos; y ellos los desalojaron, y se establecieron en su lugar hasta hoy^b. 23 Y a los aveos que habitaban en aldeas hasta Gaza^a, los caftoreos^1b, que salieron de Caftor^2c, los destruyeron y se establecieron en su lugar.) 24 «Levantaos; partid y pasad por el valle¹ del Arnón^a. Mira, he entregado en tu mano a Sehón amorreo, rey de Hesbón, y a su tierra; comienza a tomar posesión y entra² en batalla con él. 25 Hoy comenzaré a infundir¹ el espanto y temor tuyo^a entre² los pueblos debajo del cielo³, quienes, al oír tu fama, temblarán y se angustiarán a causa de ti^b».

26 ^aEntonces envié mensajeros desde el desierto de Cademot a Sehón, rey de Hesbón, con palabras de paz, diciendo: 27 «Déjame pasar por tu tierra; iré solamente por el camino, sin apartarme ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda. 28 Me venderás comestibles por dinero para que yo pueda comer, y me darás agua por dinero para que pueda beber; déjame tansolo pasar a pie^1a, 29 tal como hicieron conmigo los hijos de Esaú que habitan en Seir, y los moabitas que habitan en Ar^a, hasta que cruce el Jordán a la tierra que el SEÑOR nuestro Dios nos da». 30 Pero Sehón, rey de Hesbón, no quiso dejarnos pasar por su tierra^1a porque el SEÑOR tu Dios endureció su espíritu e hizo obstinado su corazón^b, a fin de entregarlo en tus manos, como lo está hoy. 31 Y el SEÑOR me dijo: «Mira, he comenzado a entregar a Sehón y su tierra en tus manos¹. Comienza a ocuparla² para que poseas la tierra».

32 Entonces Sehón salió con¹ todo su pueblo a encontrarnos en batalla en Jahaza. 33 Y el SEÑOR nuestro Dios lo entregó a¹ nosotros^a; y lo derrotamos^2b a él, a sus hijos y a todo su pueblo. 34 En aquel tiempo tomamos todas sus ciudades, y exterminamos¹ a hombres, mujeres y niños de cada ciudad^2a. No dejamos ningún sobreviviente. 35 Tomamos solamente como nuestro botín los animales y los despojos de las ciudades que habíamos capturado^a. 36 Desde Aroer, que está a la orilla del valle del Arnón, y desde la ciudad que está en el valle¹, aun hasta Galaad^a, no hubo ciudad inaccesible² para nosotros; el SEÑOR nuestro Dios nos³ las entregó todas. 37 Solamente no te acercaste a la tierra de los hijos de Amón^a, a todo lo largo del arroyo Jaboc^b, ni a las ciudades del monte, todo lo que el SEÑOR nuestro Dios había prohibido¹.

“^aThen we turned and set out for the wilderness by the way of the ¹Red Sea, as the LORD spoke to me, and we circled ^bMount Seir for many days. 2 And the LORD spoke to me, saying, 3 ‘You have circled this mountain long enough. Now turn north, 4 ^aand command the people, saying, “You are going to pass through the ^bterritory of your brothers the sons of Esau, who live in Seir; and ^cthey will be afraid of you. So be very careful; 5 do not ¹provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even as much as a ²footprint, ^abecause I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession. 6 You are to buy food from them with money so that you may eat, and you shall also purchase water from them with money so that you may drink. 7 For the LORD your God has blessed you in all ¹that you have done; He has known your ²wandering through this ^agreat wilderness. These ^bforty years the LORD your God has been with you; you have not lacked anything.”’

8 “So we passed beyond our brothers the sons of Esau, who live in Seir, away from the ^aArabah road, away from Elath and ^bEzion-geber. And we turned and passed through by the way of the wilderness of Moab. 9 Then the LORD said to me, ‘Do not attack Moab, nor provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of ¹their land as a possession, because I have given ^aAr to ^bthe sons of Lot as a possession.’ 10 (The ^aEmim lived there previously, a people as great, numerous, and tall as the Anakim. 11 Like the Anakim, they too are regarded as ^aRephaim, but the Moabites call them Emim. 12 ^aThe Horites previously lived in Seir, but the sons of Esau dispossessed them and destroyed them from before ¹them, and settled in their place; ^bjust as Israel did to the land of ²their possession which the LORD gave them.) 13 ‘Now arise and cross over the ¹Wadi Zered yourselves.’ So we crossed over the ²Wadi Zered. 14 Now the ¹time that it took for us to come from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed over the ²Wadi Zered was ^athirty-eight years, until ^ball the generation of the men of war perished from within the camp, just as ^cthe LORD had sworn to them. 15 ^aIndeed, the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from within the camp until they all perished.

16 “So it came about, when ^aall the men of war had finally perished from among the people, 17 that the LORD spoke to me, saying, 18 ‘Today you shall cross over ^aAr, the border of Moab. 19 When you come opposite the ^asons of Ammon, do not attack them nor provoke them, for I will not give you any of the land of the sons of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to ^bthe sons of Lot as a possession.’ 20 (It is also regarded as the land of the ^aRephaim, because the Rephaim previously lived in it, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummin, 21 a people as great, numerous, and tall as the Anakim; but the LORD destroyed them before ¹them. And they dispossessed them and settled in their place, 22 just as He did for the sons of Esau, who ^alive in Seir, when He destroyed ^bthe Horites from before them; they dispossessed them and settled in their place, where they remain even to this day. 23 And as for the ^aAvvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the ^1bCaphtorim, who came from ^2cCaphtor, destroyed them and lived in their place.) 24 ‘Arise, set out, and pass through the ^1aValley of Arnon. Look! I have handed over to you Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; start taking possession and plunge into battle with him. 25 This day I will begin to put ^athe dread and fear of you upon the faces of ¹people everywhere, ²who, when they hear the news of you, ^bwill tremble and be in anguish because of you.’

26 “^aSo I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying, 27 ‘Let me pass through your land; I will ¹travel only on the road. I will not turn aside to the right or to the left. 28 You will sell me food for money so that I may eat, and give me water for money so that I may drink, ^aonly let me pass through on ¹foot, 29 just as the sons of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in ^aAr did for me, until I cross over the Jordan into the land that the LORD our God is giving us.’ 30 But ^aSihon king of Heshbon was not willing for us to pass ¹through his land; for the ^bLORD your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, in order to hand him over to you, as he is today. 31 And the LORD said to me, ‘See, I have begun to turn Sihon and his land over ¹to you. Begin taking possession, so that you may possess his land.’

32 “Then Sihon came out ¹with all his people to meet us in battle at Jahaz. 33 And ^athe LORD our God turned him over ¹to us, and we ^2bdefeated him with his sons and all his people. 34 So we captured all his cities at that time and ^1autterly destroyed ²the men, women, and children of every city. We left no survivor. 35 We took ^aonly the animals as our plunder, and the spoils of the cities which we had captured. 36 From ^aAroer which is on the edge of the ¹Valley of Arnon and from the city which is in the ²valley, even to Gilead, there was no city that was too ³high for us; the LORD our God turned it all over ⁴to us. 37 ^aOnly you did not go near the land of the sons of Ammon, all along the ¹river ^bJabbok and the cities of the hill country, and wherever the LORD our God had commanded us to avoid.

So be very careful; 5 do not provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even as little as a footstep, ^abecause I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession. 6 You shall buy food from them with money so that you may have something to eat, and you shall also buy water from them with money so that you may have something to drink. 7 For the LORD your God has blessed you in all ¹that you have done; He has known about your wanderings through this ^agreat wilderness. These ^bforty years the LORD your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing.”’

8 “So we passed beyond our brothers the sons of Esau, who lived in Seir, away from the ^aArabah (wilderness) road, away from Elath and ^bfrom Ezion-geber. Then we turned and passed through by the way of the Wilderness of Moab. 9 And the LORD said to me, ‘Do not harass the descendants of Moab, nor provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land as a possession, because I have given ^aAr to ^bthe sons (Moab and Ammon) of Lot as a possession.’ Gen 19:30-38 10 (The ^aEmim lived there in times past, a people great and numerous, and as tall as the Anakim. 11 These also are regarded as ^aRephaim an ancient people, as are the Anakim, but the Moabites call them Emim. 12 ^aThe Horites also used to live in Seir, but the sons of Esau dispossessed them. They destroyed them from before them and settled in their place, ^bjust as Israel did in the land which the LORD gave them as their possession.) 13 ‘Now ¹arise and cross the valley of the ²Zered.’ So we crossed the Zered Valley. 14 Now ^athirty-eight years passed from the time we left Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the Zered Valley, until that ^bentire generation of the men of war had died from within the camp, just as ^cthe LORD had sworn to them. 15 ^aMoreover the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from within the camp, until they were all dead.

16 “So it came about when ^aall the men of war had finally died from among the people, 17 that the LORD spoke to me, saying, 18 ‘Today you are to pass through ^aAr, the border of Moab. 19 When you come opposite the territory of the ^asons of ¹Ammon, do not harass them nor provoke them, for I will not give you any of the land of the sons of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to ^bthe sons of Lot as a possession.’ 20 (It is also regarded as the land of the ^aRephaim of giant stature, for Rephaim used to live there, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummin, 21 a great, numerous people, and tall as the Anakim, but the LORD destroyed them before the sons of Ammon. And they dispossessed them and settled in their place, 22 just as He did for the sons of Esau, who ^alive in Seir, when He destroyed ^bthe Horites from before them; and the sons of Esau (the Edomites) dispossessed them and settled in their place and remain there even to this day. 23 As for the ^aAvvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the ^bCaphtorim (Cretans, later Philistines) who came from ^cCaphtor (Crete) destroyed them and settled in their place.) 24 ‘Now arise, continue on, and go through the ^avalley of the ¹Arnon. Look, I have handed over to you Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin! Take possession of it and fight with him in battle. 25 This day I will begin to put the ^adread and the fear of you on the peoples (pagans) under the whole heaven, who, when they hear the reports about you, ^bwill tremble and be in anguish because of you.’

26 “^aSo I sent messengers from the Wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying, 27 ‘Let me pass through your land with my people. I will travel with them only on the highway; I will not turn away to the right or to the left. 28 You will sell me food for money so that I along with my people will eat, and you will give me water for money so that I along with my people will drink; ^aonly let me and my people travel through the land on foot, 29 just as the sons of Esau, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in ^aAr, ¹did for me, until I cross the Jordan into the land which the LORD our God is giving us.’ 30 But ^aSihon king of Heshbon was not willing for us to travel through his land; for the ^bLORD your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, in order to hand him over to you, as he is today. 31 The LORD said to me, ‘Look, I have begun to hand over to you Sihon and his land. Begin! Take possession of it, so that you may possess his land.’

32 “Then at Jahaz, Sihon and all his people came out to meet us in battle. 33 So ^athe LORD our God handed him over to us and gave us the victory, and we ^bdefeated him and his sons and all his people. 34 At the same time we took all his cities and ^autterly destroyed every city—men, women and children. We left no survivor. 35 We took ^aonly the cattle as plunder for ourselves and the spoil of the cities which we had captured. 36 From ^aAroer, which is on the edge of the Arnon Valley, and from the city which is in the valley, as far as Gilead, there was no city whose wall was too high and too strong for us; the LORD our God handed over everything to us. 37 ^aOnly you did not go near the land of the sons of Ammon, all along the river ^1bJabbok and the cities of the hill country, and wherever the LORD our God had forbidden us.

32 “Then Sihon ¹with all his people came out to meet us in battle at Jahaz. 33 ^aThe LORD our God delivered him ¹over to us, and we ^2bdefeated him with his sons and all his people. 34 So we captured all his cities at that time and ^1autterly destroyed ²the men, women and children of every city. We left no survivor. 35 We took ^aonly the animals as our booty and the spoil of the cities which we had captured. 36 From ^aAroer which is on the edge of the ¹valley of Arnon and from the city which is in the ²valley, even to Gilead, there was no city that was too high for us; the LORD our God delivered all ³over to us. 37 ^aOnly you did not go near to the land of the sons of Ammon, all along the ¹river ^bJabbok and the cities of the hill country, and wherever the LORD our God had commanded us.
