Y Naamán, capitán del ejército del rey de Aram^a, era un gran hombre delante de su señor y tenido en alta estima, porque por medio de él el SEÑOR había dado la victoria¹ a Aram. También el hombre era un guerrero valiente, pero leproso. 2 Y habían salido los arameos en bandas^a y habían tomado cautiva a una muchacha muy joven de la tierra de Israel, y ella estaba al servicio¹ de la mujer de Naamán. 3 Y ella dijo a su señora: ¡Ah, si mi señor estuviera con el¹ profeta que está en Samaria! Él entonces lo curaría de su lepra. 4 Y Naamán entró y habló a su señor, diciendo: Esto y esto ha dicho la muchacha que es de la tierra de Israel. 5 Entonces el rey de Aram dijo: Ve ahora^1a, y enviaré una carta al rey de Israel. Y él fue y llevó consigo diez talentos² de plata y seis mil siclos³ de oro y diez mudas de ropa^b. 6 También llevó al rey de Israel la carta que decía¹: Y ahora, cuando llegue a ti esta carta, he aquí, verás que te he enviado a mi siervo Naamán para que lo cures de su lepra. 7 Y sucedió que cuando el rey de Israel leyó la carta, rasgó sus vestidos^a, y dijo: ¿Acaso soy yo Dios, para dar muerte y para dar vida^b, para queeste me mande a decir que cure a un hombre de su lepra? Pero considerad ahora, y ved cómo busca pleito conmigo^1c.

8 Y¹ al oír Eliseo, el hombre de Dios^a, que el rey de Israel había rasgado sus vestidos, envió aviso al rey diciendo: ¿Por qué has rasgado tus vestidos? Que venga él a mí ahora, y sabrá que hay profeta en Israel. 9 Vino, pues, Naamán con sus caballos y con su carro, y se paró a la entrada de la casa de Eliseo. 10 Y Eliseo le envió un mensajero, diciendo: Ve y lávate^a en el Jordán siete veces, y tu carne se te restaurará, y quedarás limpio. 11 Pero Naamán se enojó, y se iba diciendo: He aquí, yo pensé¹: «Seguramente él vendrá² a mí, y se detendrá e invocará el nombre del SEÑOR su Dios, moverá su mano sobre la parte enferma y curará la lepra³». 12 ¿No son el Abaná¹ y el Farfar, ríos de Damasco, mejor que todas las aguas de Israel? ¿No pudiera yo lavarme en ellos y ser limpio? Y dio la vuelta, y se fue enfurecido^a. 13 Pero sus siervos se le acercaron y le hablaron, diciendo^a: Padre mío, si el profeta te hubiera dicho que hicieras alguna gran cosa, ¿no la hubieras hecho? ¡Cuánto más cuando te dice: «Lávate, y quedarás limpio^b»! 14 Entonces él bajó y se sumergió siete veces en el Jordán conforme a la palabra del hombre de Dios; y su carne se volvió como la carne de un niño pequeño^a, y quedó limpio^b.

15 Y regresó al hombre de Dios con¹ toda su compañía, y fue y se puso delante de él, y dijo: He aquí, ahora conozco que no hay Dios en toda la tierra, sino en Israel^a. Te ruego, pues, que recibas ahora un presente² de tu siervo^b. 16 Pero él respondió: Vive el SEÑOR, delante de quien estoy^a, que no aceptaré nada^b. Y Naamán le insistió para que lo recibiera, pero él rehusó. 17 Y Naamán dijo: Pues si no, te ruego que de esta tierra, se le dé a tu siervo la carga de un par de mulos, porque tu siervo ya no ofrecerá holocausto ni sacrificará a otros dioses, sino al SEÑOR^a. 18 Que el SEÑOR perdone a tu siervo en esto: Cuando mi señor entre en el templo¹ de Rimón para adorar allí y se apoye en mi mano^a, y yo me incline en el templo² de Rimón cuando tenga que adorar allí³, que el SEÑOR perdone a tu siervo por esto. 19 Y él le dijo: Vete en paz^a. Y se alejó de él a cierta distancia.

20 Pero Giezi, criado de Eliseo^a, el hombre de Dios, dijo para sí: He aquí, mi señor ha dispensado a este Naamán arameo al no¹ recibir de sus manos lo que él trajo. Vive el SEÑOR^b que correré tras él y tomaré algo de él. 21 Y Giezi siguió a Naamán. Cuando Naamán vio a uno corriendo tras él, bajó de su carro a encontrarle, y dijo: ¿Está todo bien? 22 Y él dijo: Todo está bien^a. Mi señor me ha enviado, diciendo: «He aquí, en este momento dos jóvenes de los hijos de los profetas han venido a mí de la región montañosa de Efraín^b. Te ruego que les des un talento de plata y dos mudas de ropa^c». 23 Y Naamán dijo: Dígnate aceptar dos talentos. 6 And he brought the letter to the king of Israel, ¹which said, “And now as this letter comes to you, behold, I have sent Naaman my servant to you, so that you may cure him of his leprosy.” 7 But when the king of Israel read the letter, ^ahe tore his clothes and said, “^bAm I God, to kill and to keep alive, that this man is sending word to me to cure a man of his leprosy? But ^cconsider now, and see how he is seeking ¹a quarrel against me.”

8 Now it happened, when Elisha ^athe man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, that he sent word to the king, saying, “Why did you tear your clothes? Just have him come to me, and he shall learn that there is a prophet in Israel.” 9 So Naaman came with his horses and his chariots, and stood at the doorway of Elisha’s house. 10 And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, “^aGo and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh will be restored to you and you will be clean.” 11 But Naaman was furious and went away, and he said, “Behold, I ¹thought, ‘He will certainly come out to me, and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, and wave his hand over the site and cure the ²leprosy.’ 12 Are ¹Abanah and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, not better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean?” So he turned and ^awent away in a rage. 13 ^aThen his servants approached and spoke to him, ¹saying, “^bMy father, had the prophet told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more then, when he says to you, ‘Wash, and be clean’?” 14 So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, in accordance with the word of the man of God; and ^ahis flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and ^bhe was clean.

15 Then he returned to the man of God ¹with all his company, and came and stood before him. And he said, “Behold now, ^aI know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel; so please ^baccept a ²gift from your servant now.” 16 But he said, “^aAs surely as the LORD lives, before whom I stand, ^bI will accept nothing.” And he urged him to accept it, but he refused. 17 Then Naaman said, “If not, please let your servant be given two mules’ load of ^aearth; for your servant will no longer offer a burnt offering nor a sacrifice to other gods, but to the LORD. 18 Regarding this matter may the LORD forgive your servant: when my master goes into the house of Rimmon to worship there, and ^ahe leans on my hand and I bow down in the house of Rimmon, when I bow down in the house of Rimmon, may the LORD please forgive your servant in this matter.” 19 He said to him, “^aGo in peace.” So he went some distance from him.

20 But ^aGehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, ¹thought, “Behold, my master has spared this Naaman the Aramean, ²by not accepting from his hand what he brought. ^bAs the LORD lives, I will run after him and take something from him.” 21 So Gehazi pursued Naaman. When Naaman saw someone running after him, he came down from the chariot to meet him and said, “Is everything well?” 22 And he said, “^aEverything is well. My master has sent me, saying, ‘Behold, just now two young men of the sons of the prophets have come to me from ^bthe hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent of silver and ^ctwo changes of clothes.’” 23 Naaman said, “^aBe sure to take two talents.” And he urged him, and tied up two talents of silver in two bags with two changes of clothes, and gave them to two of his servants; and they carried them before him. 24 When he came to the ¹hill, he took them from their hand and ^adeposited them in the house, and he sent the men away, and they departed. 25 But he went in and stood before his master. And Elisha said to him, “Where have you been, Gehazi?” And he said, “^aYour servant went nowhere.”

26 Then he said to him, “Did my heart not go with you, when the man turned from his chariot to meet you? ^aIs it a time to accept money and to accept clothes, olive groves, vineyards, sheep, oxen, and male and female slaves? 27 Therefore, the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and to your ¹descendants forever.” So he went out from his presence ^aafflicted with leprosy, as white as snow.

^aNow Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Aram (Syria) , was considered a great man by his king, and was highly respected because through Naaman the LORD had given victory to Aram (Syria) . He was also a man of courage, but he was a ¹leper. 2 The Arameans (Syrians) had gone out ^ain bands as raiders and had taken captive a little girl from the land of Israel; and she waited on Naaman’s wife as a servant. 3 She said to her mistress, “I wish that my master Naaman were with the prophet who is in Samaria! Then he would heal him of his leprosy.” 4 Naaman went in and told his master the king, “The girl who is from the land of Israel said such and such.” 5 Then the king of Aram (Syria) said, “Go now, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel (Jehoram the son of Ahab) .” So he left and ^atook with him ten talents of silver and 6,000 shekels of gold, and ten ^bchanges of clothing.

6 And he brought the letter to the king of Israel. It said, “And now when this letter comes to you, I will have sent my servant Naaman to you, so that ¹you may heal him of his leprosy.” 7 When the king of Israel read the letter, he ^1atore his clothes in shock and outrage at the request and said, “^bAm I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man sends to me a request to heal a man of his leprosy? Just ^cconsider what he is asking and see how he is seeking an opportunity for a battle with me.”

8 Now when Elisha ^athe man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent word to the king, asking, “Why have you torn your clothes? Just let Naaman come to me, and he shall know that there is a true prophet in Israel.” 9 So Naaman came with his horses and chariots and stopped at the entrance of Elisha’s house. 10 Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, “^aGo and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh will be restored to you and you will be clean.” 11 But Naaman was furious and went away and said, “Indeed! I thought ‘He would at least come out to see me and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, and wave his hand over the place of leprosy and heal the leper.’ 12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus in Aram, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean?” So he turned and ^awent away in a rage. 13 ^aThen his servants approached and said to him, “^bMy father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more then, when he has said to you, ‘Wash, and be clean?’” 14 So he went down and plunged himself into the Jordan seven times, just as the man of God had said; and ^ahis flesh was restored like that of a little child and ^bhe was clean.

15 Then Naaman returned to the man of God, he and all the people in his group, and stood before him. He said, “Behold, ^aI know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel; so now ^baccept a blessing and gift from your servant.” 16 But Elisha said, “^aAs the LORD lives, before whom I stand, ^bI will accept nothing.” He urged him to take it, but Elisha refused. 17 Naaman said, “If not, then please, let your servant be given a load of ^1aearth for a team of mules; for from this day on your servant will no longer offer a burnt offering nor a sacrifice to other gods, but only to the LORD, the God of Israel. 18 In this matter may the LORD pardon your servant: when my master the king goes into the house of his god Rimmon to worship there, and ^ahe leans on my hand and I bow in the house of Rimmon, when I bow down in the house of Rimmon, may the LORD pardon your servant in this matter of attending the king when he worships.” 19 Elisha said to him, “^aGo in peace.” So Naaman departed and was a good distance away from him,

20 when ^aGehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, “My master has spared this Naaman the Aramean (Syrian) , by not accepting from him what he brought. ^bAs the LORD lives, I will run after him and get something from him.” 21 So Gehazi pursued Naaman. When Naaman saw someone running after him, he got down from the chariot to meet him and said, “Is all well?” 22 And he said, “^aAll is well. My master has sent me to say, ‘Just now two young men of the sons of the prophets have come to me from the ^bhill country of Ephraim. Please give them a ¹talent of silver and ^ctwo changes of clothes.’” 23 Naaman said, “^aPlease take two talents.” And he urged him to accept, and tied up two talents of silver in two bags with two changes of clothes and gave them to two of his servants; and they carried them in front of Gehazi. 24 When he came to the hill, he took them from their hand and ^aput them in the house for safekeeping; and he sent the men away, and they left. 25 Then he went in and stood before his master. Elisha asked him, “Where have you been, Gehazi?” He said, “^aYour servant went nowhere.”

26 Elisha said to him, “Did my heart not go with you, when the man turned from his chariot to meet you? ^aIs it a proper time to accept money and clothing and olive orchards and vineyards and sheep and oxen and male and female servants? 27 Therefore, the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and to your descendants forever.” So Gehazi departed from his presence, ^aa leper as white as snow.
