^aÉl se marchó de allí y llegó* a su pueblo^b; y sus discípulos le siguieron*. 2 Cuando llegó el día de reposo, comenzó a enseñar en la sinagoga^a; y muchos que le escuchaban se asombraban^b, diciendo: ¿Dónde obtuvoeste tales¹ cosas, y cuál es esta sabiduría que le ha sido dada, y estos milagros² que hace con sus manos? 3 ¿No eseste el carpintero, el hijo de María, y hermano^a de Jacobo¹, José, Judas y Simón^b? ¿No están sus hermanas^c aquí con nosotros? Y se escandalizaban a causa de Él^d. 4 Y Jesús les dijo: No hay profeta sin honra sino en su propia tierra^a, y entre sus parientes, y en su casa^b. 5 Y no pudo hacer allí ningún milagro¹;solo sanó a unos pocos enfermos sobre los cuales puso sus manos^a. 6 Y estaba maravillado de la incredulidad de ellos.

Y recorría las aldeas de alrededor enseñando^a.

7 ^aEntonces llamó* a los doce^b y comenzó a enviarlos de dos en dos^c, dándoles autoridad sobre los espíritus inmundos; 8 y les ordenó que no llevaran nada para el camino^a, sinosolo un bordón; ni pan, ni alforja¹, ni dinero en el cinto; 9 sino calzados con sandalias. No llevéis dos túnicas¹ 10 —les dijo—y dondequiera que entréis en una casa, quedaos allí hasta que salgáis de la población¹. 11 Y en cualquier lugar que no os reciban ni os escuchen, al salir de allí, sacudid el polvo de la planta¹ de vuestros pies^a en testimonio contra ellos. 12 Y saliendo, predicaban^1a que todos se arrepintieran. 13 Y echaban fuera muchos demonios, y ungían con aceite a muchos enfermos y los sanaban^a.

14 ^aEl rey Herodes se enteró¹ de esto, pues el nombre de Jesús² se había hecho célebre, y la gente decía: Juan el Bautista^b ha resucitado de entre los muertos, por eso es que estos poderes milagrosos actúan en él. 15 Pero otros decían: Es Elías. Y decían otros: Es un profeta, como uno de los profetas antiguos^a. 16 Y al oír esto Herodes, decía: Juan, a quien yo decapité, ha resucitado. 17 Porque Herodes mismo había enviado a prender a Juan y lo había encadenado en la cárcel por causa de Herodías, mujer de su hermano Felipe^a, pues Herodes se había casado con ella. 18 Porque Juan le decía a Herodes: No te es lícito tener la mujer de tu hermano^a. 19 Y Herodías^a le tenía rencor y deseaba matarlo, pero no podía, 20 porque Herodes temía a Juan, sabiendo que era un hombre justo y santo^a, y lo mantenía protegido. Y cuando le oía se quedaba muy perplejo, pero le gustaba escucharlo¹. 21 Pero llegó un día oportuno, cuando Herodes, siendo su cumpleaños, ofreció un banquete^a a sus nobles y comandantes¹ y a los principales de Galilea^b; 22 y cuando la hija misma de Herodías^a entró y danzó, agradó a Herodes y a los que se sentaban¹ a la mesa con él; y el rey dijo a la muchacha: Pídeme lo que quieras y te lo daré. 23 Y le juró: Te daré lo que me pidas, hasta la mitad de mi reino^a. 24 Ella salió y dijo a su madre: ¿Qué pediré? Y ella le respondió: La cabeza de Juan el Bautista. 25 Enseguida ella se presentó apresuradamente ante el rey con su petición¹, diciendo: Quiero que me des ahora mismo la cabeza de Juan el Bautista en una bandeja. 26 Y aunque el rey se puso muy triste, sin embargo a causa de sus juramentos y de los que se sentaban¹ con él a la mesa, no quiso desairarla. 27 Y al instante el rey envió a un verdugo y le ordenó que trajera la cabeza de Juan¹. Y él fue y lo decapitó en la cárcel, 28 y trajo su cabeza en una bandeja, y se la dio a la muchacha, y la muchacha se la dio a su madre. 29 Cuando sus discípulos oyeron esto, fueron y se llevaron el cuerpo y le dieron sepultura¹.

30 Los apóstoles^a se reunieron* con Jesús, y le informaron sobre todo lo que habían hecho y enseñado^b. 31 Y Él les dijo*: Venid, apartaos de los demás a un lugar solitario y descansad un poco. (Porque había muchos que iban y venían, y ellos no tenían tiempo ni siquiera para comer^a.) 32 ^aY se fueron en la barca a un lugar solitario, apartado^b. 33 Pero la gente los vio partir, y muchos los reconocieron y juntos corrieron allá a pie de todas las ciudades, y llegaron antes que ellos. 34 Al desembarcar¹, Él vio una gran multitud, y tuvo compasión de ellos, porque eran como ovejas sin pastor^a; y comenzó a enseñarles muchas cosas. 35 Y cuando era ya muy tarde, sus discípulos se le acercaron, diciendo: El lugar está desierto y ya es muy tarde; 36 despídelos para que vayan a los campos y aldeas de alrededor, y se compren algo de comer¹. 37 Pero respondiendo Él, les dijo: Dadles vosotros de comer. Y ellos le dijeron*: ¿Quieres que vayamos y compremos doscientos denarios^1a de pan y les demos de comer^b? 38 Y Él les dijo*: ¿Cuántos panes tenéis? Id y ved. Y cuando se cercioraron le dijeron*: Cinco, y dos peces. 39 Y les mandó que todos se recostaran por grupos sobre la hierba verde. 40 Y se recostaron por grupos de cien y de cincuenta. 41 Entonces Él tomó los cinco panes y los dos peces, y levantando los ojos al cielo, los bendijo, y partió los panes y los iba dando a los discípulos para que se los sirvieran^1a; también repartió los dos peces entre todos. 42 Todos comieron y se saciaron. 43 Y recogieron doce cestas llenas de los pedazos^a, y también de los peces. 44 Los que comieron los panes eran cinco mil hombres^a.

45 ^aEnseguida hizo que sus discípulos subieran a la barca^b y fueran delante de Él al otro lado, a Betsaida^c, mientras Él despedía a la multitud. 46 Y después de despedirse de ellos^a, se fue al monte a orar^b. 47 Al anochecer, la barca estaba en medio del mar, y Él estaba solo en tierra. 48 Y al verlos remar fatigados, porque el viento les era contrario, como a la cuarta vigilia¹ de la noche^a, fue* hacia ellos andando sobre el mar, y quería pasarles de largo. 49 Pero cuando ellos le vieron andando sobre el mar, pensaron que era un fantasma y se pusieron a gritar; 50 porque todos le vieron y se turbaron. Pero enseguida Él habló con ellos y les dijo*: ¡Tened ánimo^a; soy yo, no temáis^b! 51 Y subió con ellos a la barca^a, y el viento se calmó; y ellos estaban asombrados en gran manera, 52 porque no habían entendido lo de¹ los panes, sino que su mente estaba embotada^2a.

53 ^aTerminada la travesía, llegaron a tierra en Genesaret, y atracaron. 54 Cuando salieron de la barca, enseguida la gente reconoció a Jesús¹, 55 y recorrieron apresuradamente toda aquella comarca, y comenzaron a traer a los enfermos en sus camillas adonde oían decir que Él estaba. 56 Y dondequiera que Él entraba en aldeas, ciudades o campos, ponían a los enfermos en las plazas, y le rogaban que les permitiera tocar^a siquiera el borde de su manto^b; y todos los que lo tocaban quedaban curados¹.

^aJesus went out from there and *came into ^1bHis hometown; and His disciples *followed Him. 2 When the Sabbath came, He began ^ato teach in the synagogue; and the ^bmany listeners were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to Him, and such ¹miracles as these performed by His hands? 3 Is not this ^athe carpenter, ^bthe son of Mary, and brother of ¹James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not ^cHis sisters here with us?” And they took ^doffense at Him. 4 Jesus said to them, “^aA prophet is not without honor except in ^1bhis hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household.” 5 And He could do no ¹miracle there except that He ^alaid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And He wondered at their unbelief.

^aAnd He was going around the villages teaching.

7 ^aAnd ^bHe *summoned the twelve and began to send them out ^cin pairs, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits; 8 ^aand He instructed them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a mere staff—no bread, no ¹bag, no money in their belt— 9 but ¹to wear sandals; and He added, “Do not put on two ²tunics.” 10 And He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you ¹leave town. 11 Any place that does not receive you or listen to you, as you go out from there, ^ashake the dust ¹off the soles of your feet for a testimony against them.” 12 ^aThey went out and ¹preached that men should repent. 13 And they were casting out many demons and ^awere anointing with oil many sick people and healing them.

14 ^aAnd King Herod heard of it, for His name had become well known; and people were saying, “^bJohn the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are at work in Him.” 15 But others were saying, “He is ^aElijah.” And others were saying, “He is ^ba prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” 16 But when Herod heard of it, he kept saying, “John, whom I beheaded, has risen!”

17 For Herod himself had sent and had John arrested and bound in prison on account of ^aHerodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “^aIt is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” 19 ^aHerodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death and could not do so; 20 for ^aHerod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed; ¹but he ²used to enjoy listening to him. 21 A strategic day came when Herod on his birthday ^agave a banquet for his lords and ¹military commanders and the leading men ^bof Galilee; 22 and when the daughter of ^aHerodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and ¹his dinner guests; and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you.” 23 And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you; up to ^ahalf of my kingdom.” 24 And she went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” 25 Immediately she came in a hurry to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” 26 And although the king was very sorry, yet because of his oaths and because of ¹his dinner guests, he was unwilling to refuse her. 27 Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded him to bring back his head. And he went and had him beheaded in the prison, 28 and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples heard about this, they came and took away his body and laid it in a tomb.

30 ^aThe ^bapostles *gathered together with Jesus; and they reported to Him all that they had done and taught. 31 And He *said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while.” (For there were many people coming and going, and ^athey did not even have time to eat.) 32 ^aThey went away in ^bthe boat to a secluded place by themselves.

33 The people saw them going, and many recognized them and ran there together on foot from all the cities, and got there ahead of them. 34 When Jesus went ¹ashore, He ^asaw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because ^bthey were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things. 35 When it was already quite late, His disciples came to Him and said, “¹This place is desolate and it is already quite late; 36 send them away so that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves ¹something to eat.” 37 But He answered them, “You give them something to eat!” ^aAnd they *said to Him, “Shall we go and spend two hundred ^1bdenarii on bread and give them something to eat?” 38 And He *said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go look!” And when they found out, they *said, “Five, and two fish.” 39 And He commanded them all to ¹sit down by groups on the green grass. 40 They ¹sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties. 41 And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He ^ablessed the food and broke the loaves and He kept giving them to the disciples to set before them; and He divided up the two fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were satisfied, 43 and they picked up twelve full ^abaskets of the broken pieces, and also of the fish. 44 There were ^afive thousand men who ate the loaves.

45 ^aImmediately Jesus made His disciples get into ^bthe boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to ^cBethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away. 46 After ^abidding them farewell, He left ^bfor the mountain to pray.

47 When it was evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land. 48 Seeing them ¹straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, at about the ^2afourth watch of the night He *came to them, walking on the sea; and He intended to pass by them. 49 But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out; 50 for they all saw Him and were ¹terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and *said to them, “^aTake courage; it is I, ^bdo not be afraid.” 51 Then He got into ^athe boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were utterly astonished, 52 for ^athey ¹had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, but ²their heart ^bwas hardened.

53 ^aWhen they had crossed over they came to land at Gennesaret, and moored to the shore. 54 When they got out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him, 55 and ran about that whole country and began to carry here and there on their pallets those who were sick, to ¹the place they heard He was. 56 Wherever He entered villages, or cities, or countryside, they were laying the sick in the market places, and imploring Him that they might just ^atouch ^bthe fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were being cured.

45 ^aAnd immediately Jesus had His disciples get into ^bthe boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, to ^cBethsaida, while He Himself *dismissed the crowd. 46 And after ^asaying goodbye to them, He left ^bfor the mountain to pray.

47 When it was evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land. 48 Seeing them ¹straining at the oars—for the wind was against them—at about the ^2afourth watch of the night, He *came to them, walking on the sea; and He intended to pass by them. 49 But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they thought that it was a ghost, and they cried out; 50 for they all saw Him and were ¹terrified.
