Lamentos de Job

Después abrió Job su boca y maldijo el día de su nacimiento¹. 2 Y Job dijo¹:

3 ^aPerezca el día en que yo nací,y la noche que dijo: «Un varón ha sido concebido».4 Sea ese día tinieblas,no lo tome en cuenta Dios desde lo alto,ni resplandezca sobre él la luz.5 Apodérense de él tinieblas y densa oscuridad^a,pósese sobre él una nube,llénelo de terror la negrura del día.6 Y en cuanto a aquella noche, apodérense de ella las tinieblas;que no se alegre entre los días del año,ni se cuente en el número de los meses.7 He aquí, sea estéril aquella noche,no entren en ella gritos de júbilo.8 Maldíganla los que maldicen el día,los que están listos¹ para despertar a Leviatán²^a.9 Oscurézcanse las estrellas de su alba;que espere la luz mas no la tenga,que tampoco vea el rayar¹ de la aurora;10 porque no cerró las puertas¹ del vientre de mi madre,ni escondió la aflicción de mis ojos.

11 ¿Por qué no morí yo al nacer¹,o expiré al salir del vientre^a?12 ¿Por qué me recibieron las rodillas,y para qué los pechos que me dieron de mamar?13 Porque ahora yo yacería tranquilo;dormiría, y entonces tendría descanso^a14 con los reyes^a y los consejeros^b de la tierra,que reedificaron ruinas^c para sí;15 o con príncipes^a que tenían oro,que llenaban sus casas de plata^b.16 O como aborto desechado¹, yo no existiría,como los niños que nunca vieron la luz.17 Allí los impíos cesan de airarse,y allí reposan los cansados¹^a.18 Juntos reposan los prisioneros;no oyen la voz del capataz.19 Allí están los pequeños y los grandes,y el esclavo es libre de su señor.

20 ¿Por qué se da luz al que sufre^a,y vida al amargado de alma;21 a los que ansían¹ la muerte, pero no llega²^a,y cavan por ella más que por tesoros^b;22 que se alegran sobremanera,y se regocijan cuando encuentran el sepulcro?23 ¿Por qué dar luz al hombre cuyo camino está escondido^a,y a quien Dios ha cercado^b?24 Porque al ver mi alimento^a salen mis gemidos,y mis clamores se derraman como agua^b.25 Pues lo que temo¹ viene sobre mí,y lo que me aterroriza me sucede^a.26 No tengo reposo ni estoy tranquilo,no descanso, sino que me viene turbación^a.

Job’s Lament

Afterward Job opened his mouth and cursed ¹the day of his birth. 2 And Job ¹said,

3 “^aLet the day perish on which I was to be born,And the night which said, ‘A ¹boy is conceived.’4 “May that day be darkness;Let not God above care for it,Nor light shine on it.5 “Let ^adarkness and black gloom claim it;Let a cloud settle on it;Let the blackness of the day terrify it.6 “As for that night, let darkness seize it;Let it not rejoice among the days of the year;Let it not come into the number of the months.7 “Behold, let that night be barren;Let no joyful shout enter it.8 “Let those curse it who curse the day,Who are ¹prepared to ^arouse Leviathan.9 “Let the stars of its twilight be darkened;Let it wait for light but have none,And let it not see the ¹breaking dawn;10 Because it did not shut the opening of my mother’s womb,Or hide trouble from my eyes.

11 “^aWhy did I not die ¹at birth,Come forth from the womb and expire?12 “Why did the knees receive me,And why the breasts, that I should suck?13 “For now I ^awould have lain down and been quiet;I would have slept then, I would have been at rest,14 With ^akings and with ^bcounselors of the earth,Who rebuilt ^cruins for themselves;15 Or with ^aprinces ^bwho had gold,Who were filling their houses with silver.16 “Or like a miscarriage which is ¹discarded, I would not be,As infants that never saw light.17 “There the wicked cease from raging,And there the ¹weary are at ^arest.18 “The prisoners are at ease together;They do not hear the voice of the taskmaster.19 “The small and the great are there,And the slave is free from his master.

20 “Why is ^alight given to him who suffers,And life to the bitter of soul,21 Who ¹^along for death, but there is none,And dig for it more than for ^bhidden treasures,22 Who rejoice greatly,And exult when they find the grave?23 “Why is light given to a man ^awhose way is hidden,And whom ^bGod has hedged in?24 “For ^amy groaning comes at the sight of my food,And ^bmy cries pour out like water.25 “For ¹^awhat I fear comes upon me,And what I dread befalls me.26 “I ^aam not at ease, nor am I quiet,And I am not at rest, but turmoil comes.”
