Cuando¹ Jesús terminó todas estas palabras^a, dijo a sus discípulos: 2 ^aSabéis que dentro de dos días se celebra la Pascua^b, y el Hijo del Hombre será¹ entregado^c para ser crucificado. 3 Entonces los principales sacerdotes y los ancianos del pueblo se reunieron^a en el patio del sumo sacerdote^b llamado Caifás^c. 4 Y tramaron entre ellos prender a Jesús con engaño y matarle^a. 5 Pero decían: No durante la fiesta, para que no haya un tumulto en el pueblo^a.

6 ^aY hallándose Jesús en Betania^b, en casa de Simón el leproso, 7 se le acercó una mujer con un frasco de alabastro de perfume muy costoso, y lo derramó sobre su cabeza cuando estaba sentado¹ a la mesa. 8 Pero al ver esto, los discípulos se indignaron, y decían: ¿Para qué este desperdicio? 9 Porque este perfume podía haberse vendido a gran precio, y el dinero habérselo dado a los pobres. 10 Pero Jesús, dándose cuenta, les dijo: ¿Por qué molestáis a la mujer? Pues buena obra ha hecho conmigo. 11 Porque a los pobres siempre los tendréis¹ con vosotros, pero a mí no siempre me tendréis^2a. 12 Pues al derramar ella este perfume sobre mi cuerpo, lo ha hecho a fin de prepararme para la sepultura^a. 13 En verdad os digo: Dondequiera que este evangelio se predique, en el mundo entero, se hablará también de lo queesta ha hecho, en memoria suya^a.

14 ^aEntonces uno de los doce, llamado Judas Iscariote^b, fue a los principales sacerdotes, 15 y dijo: ¿Qué estáis dispuestos a darme para que yo os lo entregue^1a? Y ellos le pesaron treinta piezas² de plata^b. 16 Y desde entonces buscaba una oportunidad para entregarle.

17 ^aEl primer día de la fiesta de los panes sin levadura^1b, se acercaron los discípulos a Jesús, diciendo: ¿Dónde quieres que te hagamos los preparativos para comer la Pascua? 18 Y Él respondió: Id a la ciudad, a cierto hombre^a, y decidle: «El Maestro dice: “Mi tiempo está cerca^b; quiero celebrar la Pascua en tu casa con mis discípulos”». 19 Entonces los discípulos hicieron como Jesús les había mandado, y prepararon la Pascua.

20 ^aAl atardecer, estaba Él sentado¹ a la mesa con los doce discípulos. 21 Y mientras comían, dijo: En verdad os digo que uno de vosotros me entregará^a. 22 Y ellos, profundamente entristecidos, comenzaron a decirle uno por uno: ¿Acaso soy yo, Señor? 23 Respondiendo Él, dijo: El que metió¹ la mano conmigo en el plato,ese me entregará^a. 24 El Hijo del Hombre se va, según está escrito de Él^a; pero ¡ay de aquel hombre por quien el Hijo del Hombre es entregado! Mejor le fuera a ese hombre no haber nacido^1b. 25 Y respondiendo Judas^a, el que le iba a entregar¹, dijo: ¿Acaso soy yo, Rabí^b? Y Él le dijo: Tú lo has dicho^c.

26 ^aMientras comían, Jesús tomó pan, y habiéndolo bendecido, lo partió, y dándoselo a los discípulos^b, dijo: Tomad, comed; esto es mi cuerpo. 27 Y tomando una copa, y habiendo dado gracias, se la dio, diciendo: Bebed todos de ella; 28 porque esto es mi sangre del nuevo¹ pacto^a, que es derramada por muchos^b para el perdón de los pecados. 29 Y os digo que desde ahora no beberé más de este fruto de la vid, hasta aquel día cuando lo beba nuevo con vosotros en el reino de mi Padre.

30 ^aY después de cantar un himno, salieron hacia el monte de los Olivos^b.

31 Entonces Jesús les dijo*: Esta noche todos vosotros os apartaréis¹ por causa de mí^a, pues escrito está: «HERIRÉ AL PASTOR, Y LAS OVEJAS DEL REBAÑO SE DISPERSARÁN^b». 32 Pero después de que yo haya resucitado, iré delante de vosotros a Galilea^a. 33 Entonces Pedro, respondiendo, le dijo: Aunque todos se aparten¹ por causa de ti, yo nunca me apartaré². 34 Jesús le dijo: En verdad te digo que esta misma noche, antes que el gallo cante, me negarás tres veces^a. 35 Pedro le dijo*: Aunque tenga que morir^a contigo, jamás te negaré. Todos los discípulos dijeron también lo mismo.

36 ^aEntonces Jesús llegó* con ellos a un lugar que se llama Getsemaní, y dijo* a sus discípulos: Sentaos aquí mientras yo voy allá y oro^b. 37 Y tomando consigo a Pedro y a los dos hijos de Zebedeo^a, comenzó a entristecerse y a angustiarse. 38 Entonces les dijo*: Mi alma está muy afligida^a, hasta el punto de la muerte; quedaos aquí y velad conmigo^b. 39 Y adelantándose un poco, cayó sobre su rostro, orando y diciendo: Padre mío, si es posible, que pase de mí esta copa^a; pero no sea como yo quiero, sino como tú quieras^b. 40 Vino* entonces a los discípulos y los halló* durmiendo, y dijo* a Pedro: ¿Conque no pudisteis velar una hora conmigo^a? 41 Velad^a y orad para que no entréis en tentación; el espíritu está dispuesto, pero la carne es débil^b. 42 Apartándose de nuevo, oró por segunda vez, diciendo: Padre mío, siesta no puede pasar sin que yo la beba^a, hágase tu voluntad^b. 43 Y vino otra vez y los halló durmiendo, porque sus ojos estaban cargados de sueño. 44 Dejándolos de nuevo, se fue y oró por tercera vez, diciendo otra vez las mismas palabras¹. 45 Entonces vino* a los discípulos y les dijo*: ¿Todavía estáis¹ durmiendo y descansando? He aquí, ha llegado la hora^a, y el Hijo del Hombre es entregado en manos de pecadores. 46 ¡Levantaos! ¡Vamos! Mirad, está cerca el que me entrega.

47 ^aMientras todavía estaba Él hablando, he aquí, Judas^b, uno de los doce, llegó acompañado de¹ una gran multitud con espadas y garrotes, de parte de los principales sacerdotes y de los ancianos del pueblo. 48 Y el que le entregaba les había dado una señal, diciendo: Al que yo bese,ese es; prendedle. 49 Y enseguida se acercó a Jesús y dijo: ¡Salve, Rabí^a! Y le besó¹. 50 Y Jesús le dijo: Amigo^a, haz lo que viniste a hacer. Entonces ellos se acercaron, echaron mano a Jesús y le prendieron. 51 Y sucedió que¹ uno de los que estaban con Jesús, extendiendo la mano, sacó su espada^a, e hiriendo al siervo del sumo sacerdote, le cortó² la oreja^b. 52 Entonces Jesús le dijo*: Vuelve tu espada a su sitio, porque todos los que tomen la espada, a espada perecerán^a. 53 ¿O piensas que no puedo rogar a mi Padre, y Él pondría a mi disposición ahora mismo más de doce legiones^1a de ángeles^b? 54 Pero, ¿cómo se cumplirían entonces las Escrituras^a que dicen que así debe suceder? 55 En aquel momento¹ Jesús dijo a la muchedumbre: ¿Como contra un ladrón habéis salido con espadas y garrotes para arrestarme? Cada día solía sentarme en el templo para enseñar^a, y no me prendisteis. 56 Pero todo esto ha sucedido para que se cumplan las Escrituras^a de los profetas. Entonces todos los discípulos le abandonaron y huyeron.

57 ^aY los que prendieron a Jesús le llevaron ante el sumo sacerdote Caifás, donde estaban reunidos los escribas y los ancianos^b. 58 Y Pedro le fue siguiendo de lejos^a hasta el patio del sumo sacerdote^b, y entrando¹, se sentó con los alguaciles^2c para ver el fin de todo aquello. 59 Y los principales sacerdotes y todo el concilio^1a procuraban obtener falso testimonio contra Jesús, con el fin de darle muerte, 60 y no lo hallaron a pesar de que se presentaron muchos falsos testigos. Pero más tarde se presentaron dos^a, 61 que dijeron: Este declaró: «Yo puedo destruir el templo¹ de Dios y en² tres días reedificarlo^a». 62 Entonces el sumo sacerdote, levantándose, le dijo: ¿No respondes nada? ¿Qué testificanestos contra ti? 63 Mas Jesús callaba^a. Y el sumo sacerdote le dijo^b: Te conjuro^c por el Dios viviente^d que nos digas si tú eres el Cristo¹, el Hijo de Dios^e. 64 Jesús le dijo*: Tú mismo lo has dicho^a; sin embargo, os digo que desde ahora veréis AL HIJO DEL HOMBRE SENTADO A LA DIESTRA DEL PODER^b, y VINIENDO SOBRE LAS NUBES DEL CIELO^c. 65 Entonces el sumo sacerdote rasgó sus vestiduras, diciendo: ¡Ha blasfemado! ¿Qué necesidad tenemos de más testigos^a? He aquí, ahora mismo habéis oído la blasfemia; 66 ¿qué os parece? Ellos respondieron y dijeron: ¡Es reo de muerte^a! 67 Entonces le escupieron en el rostro y le dieron de puñetazos; y otros le abofeteaban^1a, 68 diciendo: Adivina¹, Cristo², ¿quién es el que te ha golpeado^a?

69 ^aPedro estaba sentado fuera en el patio^b, y una sirvienta se le acercó y dijo: Tú también estabas con Jesús el galileo. 70 Pero él lo negó delante de todos ellos, diciendo: No sé de qué hablas. 71 Cuando salió al portal, lo vio otra sirvienta y dijo* a los que estaban allí: Este estaba con Jesús el nazareno. 72 Y otra vez él lo negó con juramento: ¡Yo no conozco a ese¹ hombre! 73 Y un poco después se acercaron los que estaban allí y dijeron a Pedro: Seguro que tú también eres uno de ellos, porque aun tu manera de hablar te descubre^a. 74 Entonces él comenzó a maldecir y a jurar: ¡Yo no conozco a ese¹ hombre! Y al instante un gallo cantó. 75 Y Pedro se acordó de lo que¹ Jesús había dicho: Antes que el gallo cante, me negarás tres veces^a. Y saliendo fuera, lloró amargamente.

^aWhen Jesus had finished all these words, He said to His disciples, 2 “^aYou know that after two days ^bthe Passover is coming, and the Son of Man is to be ^chanded over for crucifixion.”

3 ^aThen the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in ^bthe court of the high priest, named ^cCaiaphas; 4 and they ^aplotted together to seize Jesus by stealth and kill Him. 5 But they were saying, “Not during the festival, ^aotherwise a riot might occur among the people.”

6 ^aNow when Jesus was in ^bBethany, at the home of Simon the leper, 7 ^aa woman came to Him with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume, and she poured it on His head as He reclined at the table. 8 But the disciples were indignant when they saw this, and said, “Why this waste? 9 For this perfume might have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.” 10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you bother the woman? For she has done a good deed to Me. 11 For you always have ^athe poor with you; but you do not always have Me. 12 For when she poured this perfume on My body, she did it ^ato prepare Me for burial. 13 Truly I say to you, ^awherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.”

14 ^aThen one of the twelve, named ^bJudas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What are you willing to give me ¹to ^2abetray Him to you?” And ^bthey weighed out thirty ³pieces of silver to him. 16 From then on he began looking for a good opportunity to ¹betray ²Jesus.

17 ^aNow on the first day of ^bUnleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?” 18 And He said, “Go into the city to ^aa certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “^bMy time is near; I am to keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.”’” 19 The disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.

20 ^aNow when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples. 21 As they were eating, He said, “^aTruly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.” 22 Being deeply grieved, they ¹each one began to say to Him, “Surely not I, Lord?” 23 And He answered, “^aHe who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me. 24 The Son of Man is to go, ^ajust as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! ^bIt would have been good ¹for that man if he had not been born.” 25 And ^aJudas, who was betraying Him, said, “Surely it is not I, ^bRabbi?” Jesus *said to him, “^cYou have said it yourself.”

26 ^aWhile they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and ^1bafter a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” 27 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28 for ^athis is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for ^bmany for forgiveness of sins. 29 But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”

30 ^aAfter singing a hymn, they went out to ^bthe Mount of Olives.

31 Then Jesus *said to them, “You will all ^1afall away because of Me this night, for it is written, ‘^bI WILL STRIKE DOWN THE SHEPHERD, AND THE SHEEP OF THE FLOCK SHALL BE ^cSCATTERED.’ 32 But after I have been raised, ^aI will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 33 But Peter said to Him, “Even though all may ¹fall away because of You, I will never fall away.” 34 Jesus said to him, “^aTruly I say to you that ^bthis very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” 35 Peter *said to Him, “^aEven if I have to die with You, I will not deny You.” All the disciples said the same thing too.

36 ^aThen Jesus *came with them to a place called ^bGethsemane, and *said to His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 And He took with Him ^aPeter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed. 38 Then He *said to them, “^aMy soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and ^bkeep watch with Me.”

39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let ^athis cup pass from Me; ^byet not as I will, but as You will.” 40 And He *came to the disciples and *found them sleeping, and *said to Peter, “So, you men could not ^akeep watch with Me for one hour? 41 ^aKeep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; ^bthe spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this ^acannot pass away unless I drink it, ^bYour will be done.” 43 Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more. 45 Then He *came to the disciples and *said to them, “¹Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, ^athe hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!”

47 ^aWhile He was still speaking, behold, ^bJudas, one of the twelve, came up ¹accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people. 48 Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him.” 49 Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, “Hail, ^aRabbi!” and kissed Him. 50 And Jesus said to him, “^aFriend, do what you have come for.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him.

51 And behold, ^aone of those who were with Jesus ¹reached and drew out his ^bsword, and struck the ^cslave of the high priest and ²cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus *said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for ^aall those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve ^1alegions of ^bangels? 54 How then will ^athe Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?”

55 At that time Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? ^aEvery day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. 56 But all this has taken place to fulfill ^athe Scriptures of the prophets.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled.

57 ^aThose who had seized Jesus led Him away to ^bCaiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. 58 But ^aPeter was following Him at a distance as far as the ^bcourtyard of the high priest, and entered in, and sat down with the ^1cofficers to see the outcome.

59 Now the chief priests and the whole ^1aCouncil kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. 60 They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on ^atwo came forward, 61 and said, “This man stated, ‘^aI am able to destroy the ¹temple of God and to rebuild it ²in three days.’” 62 The high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You?” 63 But ^aJesus kept silent. ^bAnd the high priest said to Him, “I ^1cadjure You by ^dthe living God, that You tell us whether You are ²the Christ, ^ethe Son of God.” 64 Jesus *said to him, “^aYou have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, ¹hereafter you will see ^bTHE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and ^cCOMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN.”

65 Then the high priest ^atore his ¹robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy; 66 what do you think?” They answered, “^aHe deserves death!”

67 ^aThen they ^bspat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others ¹slapped Him, 68 and said, “^aProphesy to us, You ¹Christ; who is the one who hit You?”

69 ^aNow Peter was sitting outside in the ^bcourtyard, and a servant-girl came to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.” 71 When he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and *said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 And again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man.” 73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Surely you too are one of them; ^afor even the way you talk ¹gives you away.” 74 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, “^aBefore a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

^aWhen Jesus had finished all these words, He said to His disciples, 2 “^aYou know that after two days ^bthe Passover is coming, and the Son of Man is to be ^chanded over for crucifixion.”

51 And behold, ^aone of those who were with Jesus ¹reached and drew his ^bsword, and struck the ^cslave of the high priest and ²cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus *said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for ^aall those who take up the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve ^1alegions of ^bangels? 54 How then would ^athe Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?”

55 At that time Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a man inciting a revolt? ^aEvery day I used to sit within the temple grounds teaching, and you did not arrest Me. 56 But all this has taken place so that ^athe Scriptures of the prophets will be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled.

57 ^aThose who had arrested Jesus led Him away to ^bCaiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. 58 But ^aPeter was following Him at a distance, as far as the ^bcourtyard of the high priest, and he came inside and sat down with the ^1cofficers to see the outcome.

59 Now the chief priests and the entire ^1aCouncil kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. 60 They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on ^atwo came forward, 61 and said, “This man stated, ‘^aI am able to destroy the ¹temple of God and to rebuild it ²in three days.’” 62 The high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You offer no answer for what these men are testifying against You?” 63 But ^aJesus kept silent. ^bAnd the high priest said to Him, “I ^cplace You under oath by ^dthe living God, to tell us whether You are the ¹Christ, ^ethe Son of God.” 64 Jesus *said to him, “^aYou have said it yourself. But I tell you, from now on you will see ^bthe Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and ^ccoming on the clouds of heaven.”

65 Then the high priest ^atore his ¹robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? See, you have now heard the blasphemy; 66 what do you think?” They answered, “^aHe deserves death!”

67 ^aThen they ^bspit in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others ¹slapped Him, 68 and said, “^aProphesy to us, You ¹Christ; who is the one who hit You?”

69 ^aNow Peter was sitting outside in the ^bcourtyard, and a slave woman came to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.” 71 When he had gone out to the gateway, another slave woman saw him and *said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 And again he denied it, with an oath: “I do not know the man.” 73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “You really are one of them as well, ^asince even the way you talk ¹gives you away.” 74 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the statement that Jesus had ¹made: “^aBefore a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

^aWhen Jesus had finished this ¹discourse, He said to His disciples, 2 “^aYou know that ^bthe Passover is coming in two days, and the Son of Man is to be ^cbetrayed and handed over for crucifixion.” Mark 14:1, 2; Luke 22:1, 2

3 ^aThen the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in ^bthe courtyard of the elegant home of the Jewish high priest, whose name was ^1cCaiaphas, 4 and ^aplotted together to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill Him. 5 But they said, “It must not be during the festival (Passover) , ^aotherwise there might be a riot among the people.”

6 ^aNow when Jesus was back in ^bBethany, at the home of ¹Simon the leper, Mark 14:3-9; John 12:1-8 7 ^aa ¹woman came to Him with an alabaster vial of very expensive ²perfume and she poured it on Jesus’ head as He reclined at the table. 8 But when the ¹disciples saw it they were indignant and angry, saying, “Why all this waste of money? 9 For this perfume might have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.” 10 But Jesus, aware of the malice of this remark, said to them, “Why are you bothering the woman? She has done a good thing to Me. 11 For you always have ^athe poor with you; but you will not always have Me. Deut 15:11; Mark 14:7 12 When she poured this perfume on My body, she did it ^ato prepare Me for burial. 13 I assure you and most solemnly say to you, ^awherever this gospel of salvation is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her for her act of love and devotion.”

14 ^aThen one of the twelve disciples, who was called ^bJudas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What are you willing to give me if I ^ahand Jesus over to you?” And ^bthey weighed out ¹thirty pieces of silver. Ex 21:32; Zech 11:12 16 And from that moment Judas began looking for an opportune time to betray Jesus. Mark 14:10, 11; Luke 22:3-6; John 6:71

17 ^aNow on the first day of ^1bUnleavened Bread (Passover Week) the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?” Mark 14:12-16; Luke 22:7-13 18 He said, “Go into the city to ^1aa certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “^bMy time to suffer and atone for sin is near; I am to keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.”’” 19 Accordingly the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover. Deut 16:5-8

20 ^aWhen evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples. Mark 14:17-21 21 And as they were eating, He said, “^aI assure you and most solemnly say to you that one of you will betray Me.” 22 Being deeply grieved and extremely distressed, each one of them began to say to Him, “Surely not I, Lord?” 23 Jesus answered, “^aHe who has dipped his hand in the bowl with Me as a ¹pretense of friendship will betray Me. 24 The Son of Man is to go to the cross, ^ajust as it is written in Scripture of Him; but woe (judgment is coming) to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! ^bIt would have been good for that man if he had never been born.” Ps 41:9 25 ^aAnd Judas, the betrayer, said, “Surely it is not I, ^bRabbi?” Jesus said to him, “^1cYou have said it yourself.”

26 Now ^aas they were eating Jesus took bread, and after ^1bblessing it, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” Mark 14:22-25; Luke 22:17-20; 1+@Cor 11:23-25 27 And when He had taken a cup and ¹given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28 for ^athis is My blood of the new and better covenant, which ratifies the agreement and is being poured out for ^bmany as a ¹substitutionary atonement for the forgiveness of sins. Ex 24:6-8 29 But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”

30 ^aAfter singing a ¹hymn, they went out to ^bthe Mount of Olives.

31 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all ^afall away because of Me this night disillusioned about Me, confused, and some even ashamed of Me, for it is written in the Scriptures, ‘^bI WILL STRIKE THE SHEPHERD, AND THE SHEEP OF THE FLOCK WILL BE ^cSCATTERED.’ Zech 13:7 32 But after I am raised to life, ^aI will go ahead of you leading the way to Galilee.” 33 Peter replied to Him, “Though they all fall away because of You and doubt and disown You, I will never fall away!” Mark 14:29-31; Luke 22:33, 34; John 13:37, 38 34 Jesus said to him, “^aI assure you and most solemnly say to you, ^bthis night, before a rooster crows, you will completely deny Me three times.” 35 Peter said to Jesus, “^aEven if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And all the disciples said the same thing.

36 ^aThen Jesus came with them to a place called ^1bGethsemane (olive-press) , and He told His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” Mark 14:32-42; Luke 22:40-46 37 And taking with Him ^aPeter and the two sons of Zebedee James and John, He began to be grieved and greatly distressed. 38 Then He said to them, “^aMy soul is deeply grieved, so that I am almost dying of sorrow. Stay here and stay awake and ^bkeep watch with Me.”

39 And after going a little farther, He fell face down and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible that is, consistent with Your will, let ^athis cup ¹pass from Me; ^byet not as I will, but as You will.” 40 And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “So, you men could not stay awake and ^akeep watch with Me for one hour? 41 ^aKeep actively watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; ^bthe spirit is willing, but the ¹body is weak.”

42 He went away a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this ^acannot pass away unless I drink it, ^bYour will be done.” 43 Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 So, leaving them again, He went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words once more. 45 Then He returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Listen, ^1athe hour of My sacrifice is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners whose way and nature is to oppose God. 46 Get up, let us go. Look, My betrayer is near!”

47 ^aAs Jesus was still speaking, ^bJudas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, came up accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came as representatives from the chief priests and elders of the people. Mark 14:43-50; Luke 22:47-53; John 18:3-11 48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him.” 49 Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, “Greetings (rejoice) , ^aRabbi!” And he ¹kissed Him in a deliberate act of betrayal. 50 Jesus said to Judas, “^aFriend, do what you came for.” Then they came and seized Jesus and arrested Him.

51 And ^1aone of those who were with Jesus reached out and drew his ^bsword, and struck Malchus the ^cslave of the high priest and cut off his ear. Mark 14:47; Luke 22:50; John 18:10 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back in its place; for ^aall those who habitually draw the sword will die by the sword. Gen 9:6 53 Do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will immediately provide Me with more than twelve ^1alegions of ^bangels? 54 How then will ^athe Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen this way?”

55 At that moment Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? ^aDay after day I used to sit in the porches and courts of the temple teaching, and you did not arrest Me. 56 But all this has taken place so that ^athe Scriptures of the prophets would be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted Him and fled.

57 ^aThose who had seized Jesus led Him away to ^1bCaiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court) had gathered ²illegally together. Mark 14:53-65; Luke 22:66-71; John 18:12f, 19-24 58 But ^aPeter followed Him at a distance as far as the ^bcourtyard of the elegant home of the Jewish high priest, and went inside, and sat with the ^1cguards to see the outcome.

59 Now the chief priests and the whole ^aCouncil (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court) tried to get false witnesses to testify against Jesus, so that they might have a reason to put Him to death. 60 They found none, even though many false witnesses came forward. At last ^atwo came forward, 61 and testified, “This man said, ‘^1aI am able to ²tear down the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’” 62 The high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Have You no answer to give? What is it that these men are testifying against You?” 63 But ^aJesus kept silent. ^bAnd the high priest said to Him, “I ^ccall on You to swear a binding oath by ^dthe living God, that you tell us whether You are the Christ, ^ethe Son of God.” 64 Jesus said to him, “^aYou have in fact said it; but more than that I tell you regardless of what you do with Me now, in the future you will see Me revealed as ^bTHE SON OF MAN SEATED AT THE ¹RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and ^cCOMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN.” Ps 110:1; Dan 7:13

65 Then the high priest ^atore his ¹robes in mock horror and exclaimed, “He has blasphemed by making Himself God’s equal! What further need have we of witnesses or evidence? See, you have now heard the blasphemy. Lev 24:16; Num 14:6 66 What do you think?” They answered, “^1aHe deserves to be put to death.”

67 ^aThen they ^bspat in His face and struck Him with their fists; and some slapped Him, Is 50:6 68 saying, “^1aProphesy to us, You Christ (Messiah, Anointed) ; who was it that struck You?”

69 ^aNow Peter was sitting outside in the ^bcourtyard, and a servant-girl came up to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.” Mark 14:66-72; Luke 22:55-62; John 18:16-18, 25-27 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.” 71 And when he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus the Nazarene.” 72 And again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man.” 73 After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them too; ^afor even your Galilean accent gives you away.” 74 Then he began to curse that is, to invoke God’s judgment on himself and swear an oath, “I do not know the man!” And at that moment a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the prophetic words of Jesus, when He had said, “^aBefore a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly in repentance.
