17 ^aTomaron, pues, a Jesús, y Él salió cargando su cruz^1b al sitio llamado el Lugar de la Calavera^c, que en hebreo^2d se dice Gólgota, 18 donde le crucificaron, y con Él^a a otros dos, uno a cada lado y Jesús en medio. 19 Pilato también escribió un letrero y lo puso sobre la cruz. Y estaba escrito: JESÚS EL NAZARENO, EL REY DE LOS JUDÍOS^a. 20 Entonces muchos judíos leyeron esta inscripción, porque el lugar donde Jesús fue crucificado quedaba cerca de la ciudad; y estaba escrita en hebreo^1a, en latín y en griego. 21 Por eso los principales sacerdotes de los judíos decían a Pilato: No escribas, «el Rey de los judíos»; sino que Él dijo: «Yo soy Rey de los judíos^a». 22 Pilato respondió: Lo que he escrito, he escrito^a.

23 Entonces los soldados^a, cuando crucificaron a Jesús, tomaron sus vestidos e hicieron cuatro partes, una parte para cada soldado^b. Y tomaron también la túnica¹; y la túnica era sin costura, tejida en una sola pieza². 24 Por tanto, se dijeron unos a otros: No la rompamos^a; sino echemos suertes sobre ella, para ver de quién será; para que se cumpliera la Escritura^b: REPARTIERON ENTRE SI MIS VESTIDOS, Y SOBRE MI ROPA ECHARON SUERTES^1c. 25 Por eso los soldados hicieron esto. Y junto a la cruz de Jesús estaban su madre^a, y la hermana de su madre, María, la mujer de Cleofas^b, y María Magdalena^c. 26 Y¹ cuando Jesús vio a su madre, y al discípulo a quien Él amaba^a que estaba allí cerca, dijo* a su madre: ¡Mujer^b, he ahí tu hijo! 27 Después dijo* al discípulo: ¡He ahí tu madre! Y desde aquella hora el discípulo la recibió en su propia casa^a.

28 Después de esto, sabiendo^a Jesús que todo se había ya consumado, para que se cumpliera la Escritura^b, dijo*: Tengo sed^c. 29 Había allí una vasija llena de vinagre; ^acolocaron, pues, una esponja empapada del vinagre en una rama de hisopo, y se la acercaron a la boca. 30 Entonces Jesús, cuando hubo tomado el vinagre, dijo: ¡Consumado es!^1a E inclinando la cabeza, entregó el espíritu^b.

31 Los judíos entonces, como era el día de preparación^a para la Pascua, a fin de que los cuerpos no se quedaran en la cruz^b el día de reposo (porque ese día de reposo era muy solemne^1c), pidieron a Pilato que les quebraran las piernas y se los llevaran. 32 Fueron, pues, los soldados y quebraron las piernas del primero, y también las del otro que había sido crucificado con Jesús^1a; 33 pero cuando llegaron a Jesús, como vieron que ya estaba muerto, no le quebraron las piernas; 34 pero uno de los soldados le traspasó el costado con una lanza, y al momento salió sangre y agua^a. 35 Y el que lo ha visto ha dado testimonio, y su testimonio es verdadero^a; y él sabe que dice la verdad, para que vosotros también creáis. 36 Porque esto sucedió para que se cumpliera la Escritura^a: NO SERÁ QUEBRADO¹ HUESO SUYO^b. 37 Y también otra Escritura dice: MIRARAN AL QUE TRASPASARON^a.

38 ^aDespués de estas cosas, José de Arimatea, que era discípulo de Jesús, aunque en secreto por miedo a los judíos^b, pidió permiso a Pilato para llevarse el cuerpo de Jesús^c. Y Pilato concedió el permiso. Pilate then took Jesus and ^1ascourged Him. 2 ^aAnd the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple robe on Him; 3 and they began to come up to Him and say, “^aHail, King of the Jews!” and to ^bgive Him slaps in the face. 4 Pilate ^acame out again and *said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you so that you may know that ^bI find no guilt in Him.” 5 Jesus then came out, ^awearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate *said to them, “Behold, the Man!” 6 So when the chief priests and the ^aofficers saw Him, they cried out saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate *said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for ^bI find no guilt in Him.” 7 The Jews answered him, “^aWe have a law, and by that law He ought to die because He ^bmade Himself out to be the Son of God.”

8 Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid; 9 and he ^aentered into the ¹Praetorium again and *said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But ^bJesus gave him no answer. 10 So Pilate *said to Him, “You do not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?” 11 Jesus answered, “^aYou would have no authority ¹over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason ^bhe who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.” 12 As a result of this Pilate ¹made efforts to release Him, but the Jews cried out saying, “^aIf you release this Man, you are no friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king ²opposes Caesar.”

13 Therefore when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and ^asat down on the judgment seat at a place called ¹The Pavement, but ^bin ²Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 Now it was ^athe day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the ^1bsixth hour. And he *said to the Jews, “Behold, ^cyour King!” 15 So they cried out, “^aAway with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!” Pilate *said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”

16 So he then ^ahanded Him over to them to be crucified.

17 ^aThey took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, ^1bbearing His own cross, to the place called ^cthe Place of a Skull, which is called ^din ²Hebrew, Golgotha. 18 There they crucified Him, and with Him ^atwo other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between. 19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, “^aJESUS THE NAZARENE, ^bTHE KING OF THE JEWS.” 20 Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written ^ain ¹Hebrew, Latin and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘^aThe King of the Jews’; but that He said, ‘I am ^bKing of the Jews.’” 22 Pilate answered, “^aWhat I have written I have written.”

23 Then ^athe soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made ^bfour parts, a part to every soldier and also the ¹tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven ²in one piece. 24 So they said to one another, “^aLet us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be”; ^bthis was to fulfill the Scripture: “THEY ^cDIVIDED MY OUTER GARMENTS AMONG THEM, AND FOR MY CLOTHING THEY CAST ¹LOTS.” 25 Therefore the soldiers did these things.

^aBut standing by the cross of Jesus were ^bHis mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and ^cMary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus then saw His mother, and ^athe disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He *said to His mother, “^bWoman, behold, your son!” 27 Then He *said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into ^ahis own household.

28 After this, Jesus, ^aknowing that all things had already been accomplished, ^bto fulfill the Scripture, *said, “^cI am thirsty.” 29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so ^athey put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. 30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “^aIt is finished!” And He bowed His head and ^bgave up His spirit.

31 Then the Jews, because it was ^athe day of preparation, so that ^bthe bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath ¹(for that Sabbath was a ^chigh day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was ^acrucified with Him; 33 but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately ^ablood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has ^atestified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. 36 For these things came to pass ^ato fulfill the Scripture, “^bNOT A BONE OF HIM SHALL BE ¹BROKEN.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “^aTHEY SHALL LOOK ON HIM WHOM THEY PIERCED.”

38 ^aAfter these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a ^bsecret one for ^cfear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body. 39 ^aNicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, ^bbringing a ¹mixture of ^cmyrrh and aloes, about a ^dhundred ²pounds weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and ^abound it in ^blinen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a ^anew tomb ^bin which no one had yet been laid. 42 Therefore because of the Jewish day of ^apreparation, since the tomb was ^bnearby, they laid Jesus there.

So Pilate then took Jesus and ^1ahad Him flogged. 2 ^aAnd the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and placed it on His head, and put a purple ¹cloak on Him; 3 and they repeatedly came up to Him and said, “^aHail, King of the Jews!” and ^bslapped Him in the face again and again. 4 And then Pilate ^acame out again and *said to them, “See, I am bringing Him out to you so that you will know that ^bI find no grounds at all for charges in ¹His case.” 5 Jesus then came out, ^awearing the crown of thorns and the purple cloak. And Pilate *said to them, “Behold, the Man!” 6 So when the chief priests and the ^aofficers saw Him, they shouted, saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate *said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him; for ^bI find no grounds for charges in ¹His case!” 7 The Jews answered him, “^aWe have a law, and by that law He ought to die, because He ^bmade Himself out to be the Son of God!”

Peace! Long life to you, King of the Jews!” And they ^bslapped Him in the face. Is 53:3, 5, 7 4 Then Pilate ^acame out again and said to them, “Look, I am bringing Him out to you so that you may know that ^bI find no guilt in Him no crime, no cause for an accusation.” 5 So Jesus came out, ^awearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, and Pilate said to them, “Look! The Man!” 6 When the chief priests and ^aofficers saw Him, they shouted, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for ^bI find no guilt in Him no crime, no cause for an accusation.” Luke 23:4, 14, 22; John 18:38; 19:4 7 The Jews answered him, “^aWe have a law regarding blasphemy, and according to that law He should die, because He ^bmade Himself out to be the Son of God.” Lev 24:16

8 So when Pilate heard this said, he was even more ¹alarmed and afraid. 9 He ^awent into the Praetorium again and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But ^bJesus did not answer him. Is 53:7 10 So Pilate said to Him, “You do not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?” 11 Jesus answered, “^aYou would have no authority over Me at all if it had not been given to you from above. For this reason the sin and guilt of ^bthe ¹one who handed Me over to you is greater than your own.” 12 As a result of this, Pilate kept making efforts to release Him, but the Jews kept screaming, “^1aIf you release this Man, you are no friend of Caesar! Anyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar and rebels against the emperor!”

13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out, and ^asat down on the judgment seat at a place called ¹The Pavement, but ^bin ²Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 Now it was ^athe day of Preparation for the ¹Passover week, and it was about the ^bsixth hour (noon) . He said to the Jews, “Look, ^cyour King!” 15 But they shouted, “^aAway with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!”

Matt 27:35; Mark 15:24; Luke 23:34 24 So they said to one another, “^aLet us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it will be.” This was ^bto fulfill the Scripture, “THEY ^cDIVIDED MY OUTER CLOTHING AMONG THEM, AND FOR MY CLOTHING THEY CAST LOTS.” Ps 22:18 25 So the soldiers did these things.

^aBut standing by the cross of Jesus were ^bHis mother, His mother’s sister ¹Salome, ²Mary the wife of Clopas, and ^cMary Magdalene. Mark 15:40 26 So Jesus, seeing His mother, and the ^1adisciple whom He loved (esteemed) standing near, said to His mother, “ Dear ^bwoman, look, here is your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple (John) , “Look! here is your mother protect and provide for her!” From that hour the disciple took her into ^ahis own home.

28 After this, Jesus, ^aknowing that all was now finished, said ^bin fulfillment of the Scripture, “^cI am thirsty.” Ps 69:21 29 A jar full of ¹sour wine was placed there; so ^athey put a sponge soaked in the sour wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to His mouth. Matt 27:48, 50; Mark 15:36f; Luke 23:36 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “^aIt is finished!” And He bowed His head and voluntarily ^1bgave up His spirit.

31 Since it was ^athe day of Preparation for the Sabbath, in order to prevent ^bthe bodies from hanging on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a ^chigh holy day) the Jews asked Pilate to have their legs ¹broken to hasten death and the bodies taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man, and of the other who had been ^acrucified with Him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately ^ablood and water came flowing out. 35 And he (John, the eyewitness) who has seen it has ^atestified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also who read this may believe. 36 For these things took place ^ato fulfill the Scripture, “^bNOT A BONE OF HIS SHALL BE BROKEN.” Ex 12:46; Num 9:12; Ps 34:20 37 And again another Scripture says, “^aTHEY SHALL LOOK AT HIM WHOM THEY HAVE PIERCED.” Zech 12:10
