Y aconteció que cuando Saúl volvió de perseguir a los filisteos^a, le dieron aviso, diciendo: He aquí, David está en el desierto de En-gadi^b. 2 Entonces Saúl tomó de todo Israel tres mil hombres escogidos, y fue en busca de David y de sus hombres por¹ los peñascos de las cabras monteses^a. 3 Llegó a unos rediles de ovejas en el camino, donde había una cueva, y Saúl entró en ella para hacer sus necesidades^1a. Y David y sus hombres estaban sentados en los rincones de la cueva^b. 4 Y los hombres de David le dijeron: Mira, este es el día del que te habló el SEÑOR: «He aquí, voy a entregar a tu enemigo en tu mano, y harás con él como bien te parezca^1a». Entonces David se levantó y cortó a escondidas la orilla del manto de Saúl^b. 5 Aconteció después de esto que la conciencia de David le remordía^1a, porque había cortado la orilla del manto de Saúl. 6 Y dijo a sus hombres: El SEÑOR me guarde de hacer tal cosa contra mi rey¹, el ungido del SEÑOR, de extender contra él mi mano, porque es el ungido del SEÑOR^a. 7 David contuvo¹ a sus hombres con estas palabras y no les permitió que se levantaran contra Saúl. Y Saúl se levantó, salió de la cueva, y siguió su camino.

8 Después de esto David se levantó, salió de la cueva y dio voces tras Saúl, diciendo: ¡Mi señor el rey! Y cuando Saúl miró hacia atrás¹, David inclinó su rostro a tierra y se postró^a. 9 Y dijo David a Saúl: ¿Por qué escuchas las palabras de los hombres, que dicen: «Mira que David procura tu mal»? 10 He aquí, hoy han visto tus ojos que el SEÑOR te ha puesto en mis manos en la cueva en este día^a; y algunos me dijeron que te matara, pero mis ojos tuvieron piedad de ti, y dije: «No extenderé mi mano contra mi rey¹, porque es el ungido del SEÑOR^b». 11 Y mira, padre mío, mira la orilla de tu manto en mi mano^a. Puesto que corté la orilla de tu manto y no te maté, reconoce y ve que no hay maldad ni rebelión¹ en mis manos y que no he pecado contra ti, a pesar de que tú acechas mi vida para quitármela^b. 12 Juzgue el SEÑOR entre tú y yo y que el SEÑOR me vengue de ti, pero mi mano no será contra ti^a. 13 Como dice el proverbio de los antiguos: «De los malos procede la maldad^a», pero mi mano no será contra ti. 14 ¿Tras quién ha salido el rey de Israel? ¿A quién persigues? ¿A un perro muerto^a? ¿A una pulga^b? 15 Sea el SEÑOR juez y decida¹ entre tú y yo^a; que Él vea y defienda mi causa^b y me libre² de tu mano.

16 Y sucedió que cuando David acabó de decir a Saúl estas palabras, Saúl dijo: ¿Esesta tu voz, David, hijo mío^a? Entonces Saúl alzó su voz y lloró. 17 Y dijo a David: Eres más justo que yo^a, porque tú me has tratado bien mientras que yo te he tratado con maldad^b. 18 Tú has demostrado hoy que me has hecho bien, ya que el SEÑOR me entregó en tu mano y sin embargo no me diste muerte^a. 19 Porque si un hombre halla a su enemigo, ¿lo dejará ir sano y salvo^1a? Que el SEÑOR, por tanto, te recompense con bien por lo que has hecho por mí hoy. 20 He aquí, ahora sé que ciertamente serás rey^a, y que el reino de Israel será establecido en tu mano^b. 21 Ahora pues, júrame por el SEÑOR que no cortarás mi descendencia¹ después de mí, y que no borrarás mi nombre de la casa de mi padre^a. 22 Y David se lo juró a Saúl. Y Saúl se fue a su casa, pero David y sus hombres subieron al refugio^1a.

Now ^awhen Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, ^bhe was told, saying, “Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi.” 2 Then ^aSaul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel and went to seek David and his men in front of the Rocks of the Wild Goats. 3 He came to the sheepfolds on the way, where there was a cave; and Saul ^awent in to ¹relieve himself. Now ^bDavid and his men were sitting in the inner recesses of the cave. 4 The men of David said to him, “Behold, ^athis is the day of which the LORD said to you, ‘Behold; ^bI am about to give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it seems good ¹to you.’” Then David arose and cut off the edge of Saul’s robe secretly. 5 It came about afterward that ^aDavid’s ¹conscience bothered him because he had cut off the edge of Saul’s robe. 6 So he said to his men, “^aFar be it from me because of the LORD that I should do this thing to my lord, the LORD’S anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, since he is the LORD’S anointed.” 7 David ¹persuaded his men with these words and did not allow them to rise up against Saul. And Saul arose, ²left the cave, and went on his way.

8 Now afterward David arose and went out of the cave and called after Saul, saying, “My lord the king!” And when Saul looked behind him, ^aDavid bowed with his face to the ground and prostrated himself. 9 David said to Saul, “Why do you listen to the words of men, saying, ‘Behold, David seeks ¹to harm you’? 10 ^aBehold, this day your eyes have seen that the LORD had given you today into my hand in the cave, and ^bsome said to kill you, but my eye had pity on you; and I said, ‘I will not stretch out my hand against my lord, for he is the LORD’S anointed.’ 11 Now, ^amy father, see! Indeed, see the edge of your robe in my hand! For in that I cut off the edge of your robe and did not kill you, know and perceive that there is no evil or ¹rebellion in my hands, and I have not sinned against you, though you ^bare lying in wait for my life to take it. 12 ^aMay the LORD judge between ¹you and me, and may the LORD avenge me on you; but my hand shall not be against you. 13 As the proverb of the ancients says, ‘^aOut of the wicked comes forth wickedness’; but my hand shall not be against you. 14 After whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom are you pursuing? ^aA dead dog, ^ba single flea? 15 ^aThe LORD therefore be judge and decide between ¹you and me; and may He see and ^bplead my cause and ²deliver me from your hand.”

16 When David had finished speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, “^aIs this your voice, my son David?” Then Saul lifted up his voice and wept. 17 ^aHe said to David, “You are more righteous than I; for ^byou have dealt well with me, while I have dealt wickedly with you. 18 You have declared today that you have done good to me, that ^athe LORD delivered me into your hand and yet you did not kill me. 19 For if a man ^afinds his enemy, will he let him go away ¹safely? May the LORD therefore reward you with good in return for what you have done to me this day. 20 Now, behold, ^aI know that you will surely be king, and that ^bthe kingdom of Israel will be established in your hand. 21 So now ^aswear to me by the LORD that you will not cut off my ¹descendants after me and that you will not destroy my name from my father’s household.” 22 David swore to Saul. And Saul went to his home, but David and his men went up to ^athe stronghold.

8 Afterward, however, David got up and went out of the cave, and called after Saul, saying, “My lord the king!” And when Saul looked behind him, ^aDavid bowed with his face to the ground and prostrated himself. 9 And David said to Saul, “Why do you listen to the words of men ¹who say, ‘Behold, David is seeking ²to harm you’? 10 ^aBehold, this day your eyes have seen that the LORD had handed you over to me today in the cave, and ^bsomeone said to kill you, but ¹I spared you; and I said, ‘I will not reach out with my hand against my lord, because he is the LORD’S anointed.’ 11 So, ^amy father, look! Indeed, look at the edge of your robe in my hand! For by the fact that I cut off the edge of your robe but did not kill you, know and understand that there is no evil or ¹rebellion in my hands, and I have not sinned against you, though you ^bare lying in wait for my life, to take it. 12 ^aMay the LORD judge between ¹you and me, and may the LORD take vengeance on you for me; but my hand shall not be against you. 13 As the proverb of the ancients says, ‘^aOut of the wicked comes wickedness’; but my hand shall not be against you. 14 After whom has the king of Israel gone out? Whom are you pursuing? ^aA dead dog, ^ba single flea? 15 May ^athe LORD therefore be judge and decide between ¹you and me; and may He see and ^bplead my cause and save me from your hand.”

16 When David had finished speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, “^aIs this your voice, my son David?” Then Saul raised his voice and wept. 17 ^aAnd he said to David, “You are more righteous than I; for ^byou have dealt well with me, while I have dealt maliciously with you. 18 You have declared today that you have done good to me, that ^athe LORD handed me over to you and yet you did not kill me. 19 Though if a man ^afinds his enemy, will he let him go away ¹unharmed? May the LORD therefore reward you with good in return for what you have done to me this day. 20 Now, behold, ^aI know that you will certainly be king, and that ^bthe kingdom of Israel will be established in your hand. 21 So now ^aswear to me by the LORD that you will not cut off my ¹descendants after me, and that you will not eliminate my name from my father’s household.” 22 And David swore an oath to Saul. Then Saul went to his home, but David and his men went up to ^athe stronghold.

When ^aSaul returned from following the Philistines, ^bhe was told, “Behold, David is in the ¹Wilderness of Engedi.” 2 Then ^aSaul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel and went to search for David and his men in front of the Rocks of the Wild Goats. 3 On the way he came to the ¹sheepfolds where there was a cave; and Saul ^awent in to ²relieve himself. Now ^bDavid and his men were sitting in the cave’s innermost recesses. 4 David’s men said to him, “Behold, this is ^athe day of which the LORD said to you, ‘Behold, ^bI will hand over your enemy to you, and you shall do to him as seems good to you.’” Then David arose in the darkness and stealthily cut off the hem (edge) of Saul’s robe. 5 Afterward, ^aDavid’s ¹conscience bothered him because he had cut off the hem of Saul’s robe. 6 He said to his men, “The LORD ^aforbid that I should do this thing to my master, the LORD’S anointed, to put out my hand against him, since he is the anointed of the LORD.” 7 So David strongly rebuked his men with these words and did not let them rise up against Saul. Saul got up, left the cave and went on his way.

8 Then David also got up afterward and went out of the cave and called after Saul, saying, “My lord the king!” And when Saul looked behind him, ^aDavid bowed with his face to the ground and lay himself face down. 9 David said to Saul, “Why do you listen to the words of men who say, ‘David seeks to harm you?’ 10 ^aBehold, your eyes have seen today how the LORD had given you into my hand in the cave. ^bSome told me to kill you, but I spared you; I said, ‘I will not reach out my hand against my lord, for he is the LORD’S anointed.’ 11 Look, ^amy father! Indeed, see the hem of your robe in my hand! Since I cut off the hem of your robe and did not kill you, know and understand without question that there is no evil or treason in my hands. I have not sinned against you, though you ^bare lying in wait to take my life. 12 ^aMay the LORD judge between me and you; and may the LORD avenge me on you; but my hand shall not be against you. 13 As the proverb of the ancients says, ‘^aOut of the wicked comes wickedness’; but my hand shall not be against you. 14 After whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom do you pursue with three thousand men? ^aA dead dog, ^ba single flea? 15 May ^athe LORD be the judge and render judgment between me and you; and may He see and ^bplead my cause and vindicate me by saving me from your hand.” Ps 142

16 When David had finished saying these words to Saul, Saul said, “^aIs this your voice, my son David?” Then Saul raised his voice and wept. 17 ^aHe said to David, “You are more righteous and upright in God’s eyes than I; for ^byou have done good to me, but I have done evil to you. 18 You have declared today the good that you have done to me, for when ^athe LORD put me into your hand, you did not kill me. 19 For if a man ^afinds his enemy, will he let him go away ¹unharmed? So may the LORD reward you with good in return for what you have done for me this day. 20 Now, behold, ^aI know that you will certainly be king and that ^bthe kingdom of Israel will be established in your hand. 21 So now ^aswear to me by the LORD that you will not cut off my descendants after me and that you will not destroy my name from my father’s household (extended family) .” 22 David gave Saul his oath; and Saul went home, but David and his men went up to ^athe mountain stronghold.
