Por cuanto muchos han tratado de compilar una historia de las cosas que entre nosotros son muy ciertas^1a, 2 tal como nos las han transmitido los que desde el principio^a fueron¹ testigos oculares^b y ministros^c de la palabra^2d, 3 también a mí me ha parecido conveniente, después de haberlo investigado¹ todo con diligencia desde el principio^a, escribírtelas ordenadamente^b, excelentísimo^c Teófilo^d, 4 para que sepas la verdad precisa acerca de las cosas que te han sido enseñadas^1a.

5 Hubo en los días de Herodes^a, rey de Judea, cierto sacerdote llamado Zacarías, del grupo de Abías^b, que tenía por mujer una de las hijas de Aarón¹ que se llamaba Elisabet. 6 Ambos eran justos delante de Dios^a, y se conducían intachablemente^b en todos los mandamientos y preceptos del Señor. 7 No tenían hijos, porque Elisabet era estéril, y ambos eran de edad avanzada¹.

8 Pero aconteció que mientras Zacarías¹ ejercía su ministerio sacerdotal delante de Dios según el orden indicado a su grupo^a, 9 conforme a la costumbre del sacerdocio, fue escogido por sorteo para entrar al templo del Señor y quemar incienso^a. 10 Y toda la multitud del pueblo estaba fuera orando^a a la hora de la ofrenda de incienso. 11 Y se le apareció un ángel del Señor^a, de pie, a la derecha del altar del incienso. 12 Al verlo, Zacarías se turbó, y el temor se apoderó de¹ él^a. 13 Pero el ángel le dijo: No temas^a, Zacarías, porque tu petición ha sido oída, y tu mujer Elisabet te dará a luz un hijo, y lo llamarás¹ Juan^b. 14 Y tendrás gozo y alegría, y muchos se regocijarán por su nacimiento. 15 Porque él será grande delante del Señor; no beberá ni vino ni licor^a, y será lleno del Espíritu Santo aun desde el vientre de su madre. 16 Y él hará volver a muchos de los hijos de Israel al Señor su Dios^a. 17 E irá delante de Él^a en el espíritu y poder de Elías^b PARA HACER VOLVER LOS CORAZONES DE LOS PADRES A LOS HIJOS^c, y a los desobedientes a la actitud de los justos, a fin de preparar^d para el Señor un pueblo bien dispuesto.

18 Entonces Zacarías dijo al ángel: ¿Cómo podré saber esto? Porque yo soy anciano y mi mujer es de edad avanzada^1a. 19 Respondiendo el ángel, le dijo: Yo soy Gabriel^a, que estoy en¹ la presencia de Dios^b, y he sido enviado para hablarte y anunciarte estas buenas nuevas. 20 Y he aquí, te quedarás mudo, y no podrás hablar hasta el día en que todo esto acontezca, por cuanto no creíste mis palabras, las cuales se cumplirán a su debido tiempo. 21 Y el pueblo estaba esperando a Zacarías, y se extrañaba de su tardanza en el templo. 22 Pero cuando salió, no podía hablarles, y se dieron cuenta de que había visto una visión en el templo; y él les hablaba por señas^a, y permanecía mudo. 23 Y¹ cuando se cumplieron los días de su servicio sacerdotal, regresó a su casa.

24 Y después de estos días, Elisabet su mujer concibió, y se recluyó¹ por cinco meses, diciendo: 25 Así ha obrado el Señor conmigo en los días en que se dignó mirarme para quitar mi afrenta entre los hombres^a.

26 Y al sexto mes, el ángel Gabriel^a fue enviado por Dios a una ciudad de Galilea llamada Nazaret^b, 27 a una virgen desposada¹ con un hombre que se llamaba José^a, de los descendientes² de David^b; y el nombre de la virgen era María. 28 Y entrando el ángel, le dijo: ¡Salve, muy favorecida¹! El Señor está² contigo; bendita eres tú entre las mujeres³. 29 Pero ella se turbó^a mucho por estas¹ palabras, y se preguntaba qué clase de saludo seríaeste. 30 Y el ángel le dijo: No temas^a, María, porque has hallado gracia delante de Dios. 31 Y he aquí, concebirás en tu seno y darás a luz un hijo, y le pondrás por¹ nombre Jesús^a. 32 Este será grande y será llamado Hijo del Altísimo^a; y el Señor Dios le dará el trono de su padre David^b; 33 y reinará sobre la casa de Jacob^a para siempre, y su reino no tendrá fin^b. 34 Entonces María dijo al ángel: ¿Cómo será esto, puesto que soy virgen¹? 35 Respondiendo el ángel, le dijo: El Espíritu Santo vendrá sobre ti^a, y el poder del Altísimo^b te cubrirá con su sombra; por eso el santo Niño^c que nacerá¹ será llamado Hijo de Dios^d. 36 Y he aquí, tu parienta Elisabet en su vejez también ha concebido un hijo; y este es el sexto mes para ella, la que llamaban estéril. 37 Porque ninguna cosa¹ será imposible para² Dios^a. 38 Entonces María dijo: He aquí la sierva del Señor; hágase conmigo conforme a tu palabra. Y el ángel se fue de su presencia.

39 En esos¹ días María se levantó y fue apresuradamente a la región montañosa^a, a una ciudad de Judá; 40 y entró en casa de Zacarías y saludó a Elisabet. 41 Y aconteció que cuando Elisabet oyó el saludo de María, la criatura saltó en su vientre; y Elisabet fue llena del Espíritu Santo^a, 42 y exclamó a gran voz y dijo: ¡Bendita tú entre las mujeres, y bendito el fruto de tu vientre! 43 ¿Por qué me ha acontecido esto a mí¹, que la madre de mi Señor^a venga a mí? 44 Porque he aquí, apenas la voz de tu saludo llegó a mis oídos, la criatura saltó de gozo en mi vientre. 45 Y bienaventurada^a la que creyó que tendrá¹ cumplimiento lo que le fue dicho de parte del Señor. 46 Entonces María dijo:^aMi alma engrandece al Señor^b,

56 Y María se quedó con Elisabet¹ como tres meses, y después regresó a su casa.

57 Cuando a Elisabet se le cumplió el tiempo de su alumbramiento, dio a luz un hijo. 58 Y sus vecinos y parientes oyeron que el Señor había demostrado su gran¹ misericordia^a hacia ella; y se regocijaban con ella. 59 Y¹ al octavo día vinieron para circuncidar al niño^a, y lo iban a llamar Zacarías según el nombre de su padre. 60 Pero la¹ madre respondió, y dijo: No, sino que se llamará Juan^a. 61 Y le dijeron: No hay nadie en tu familia¹ que tenga ese nombre. 62 Entonces preguntaban por¹ señas^a al padre, cómo lo quería llamar. 63 Y él pidió una tablilla y escribió lo siguiente¹: Su nombre es Juan^a. Y todos se maravillaron. 64 Al instante le fue abierta su boca y suelta su lengua, y comenzó a hablar^a dando alabanza a Dios. 65 Y vino temor sobre todos los que vivían a su alrededor; y todas estas cosas se comentaban en toda la región montañosa^a de Judea. 66 Y todos los que las oían las guardaban en su corazón, diciendo: ¿Qué, pues, llegará a ser este niño? Porque la mano del Señor ciertamente estaba con él^a.

67 Y su padre Zacarías fue lleno del Espíritu Santo^a, y profetizó^b diciendo:

80 Y el niño crecía y se fortalecía^a en espíritu; y vivió en lugares desiertos hasta el día en que apareció en público a Israel.

Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things ^1aaccomplished among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who ^afrom the beginning ¹were ^beyewitnesses and ^2cservants of ^dthe ³word, 3 it seemed fitting for me as well, ^ahaving ¹investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you ^bin consecutive order, ^cmost excellent ^dTheophilus; 4 so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been ^1ataught.

5 ^aIn the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named ¹Zacharias, of the ^bdivision of ²Abijah; and he had a wife ³from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 They were both ^arighteous in the sight of God, walking ^bblamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord. 7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in ¹years.

8 Now it happened that while ^ahe was performing his priestly service before God in the appointed order of his division, 9 according to the custom of the priestly office, he was chosen by lot ^ato enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And the whole multitude of the people were in prayer ^aoutside at the hour of the incense offering. 11 And ^aan angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense. 12 Zacharias was troubled when he saw the angel, and ^afear ¹gripped him. 13 But the angel said to him, “^aDo not be afraid, Zacharias, for your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and ^byou will ¹give him the name John. 14 You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. 15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and he will ^adrink no wine or liquor, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit ¹while yet in his mother’s womb. 16 And he will ^aturn many of the sons of Israel back to the Lord their God. 17 It is he who will ^ago as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of ^bElijah, ^cTO TURN THE HEARTS OF THE FATHERS BACK TO THE CHILDREN, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to ^dmake ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

18 Zacharias said to the angel, “How will I know this for certain? For ^aI am an old man and my wife is advanced in ¹years.” 19 The angel answered and said to him, “I am ^aGabriel, who ^1bstands in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. 20 And behold, you shall be silent and unable to speak until the day when these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”

21 The people were waiting for Zacharias, and were wondering at his delay in the temple. 22 But when he came out, he was unable to speak to them; and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he ^akept ¹making signs to them, and remained mute. 23 When the days of his priestly service were ended, he went back home.

24 After these days Elizabeth his wife became pregnant, and she ¹kept herself in seclusion for five months, saying, 25 “This is the way the Lord has dealt with me in the days when He looked with favor upon me, to ^atake away my disgrace among men.”

26 Now in the sixth month the angel ^aGabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called ^bNazareth, 27 to ^aa virgin ¹engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, ^bof the ²descendants of David; and the virgin’s name was ³Mary. 28 And coming in, he said to her, “Greetings, ¹favored one! The Lord ²is with you.” 29 But she ^awas very perplexed at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was. 30 The angel said to her, “^aDo not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you ^ashall name Him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of ^athe Most High; and the Lord God will give Him ^bthe throne of His father David; 33 ^aand He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, ^band His kingdom will have no end.” 34 Mary said to the angel, “How ¹can this be, since I ²am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered and said to her, “^aThe Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of ^bthe Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason ^cthe ¹holy Child shall be called ^dthe Son of God. 36 And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and ¹she who was called barren is now in her sixth month. 37 For ^1anothing will be impossible with God.” 38 And Mary said, “Behold, the ¹bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

39 Now ¹at this time Mary arose and went in a hurry to ^athe hill country, to a city of Judah, 40 and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was ^afilled with the Holy Spirit. 42 And she cried out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 And ¹how has it happened to me, that the mother of ^amy Lord would come to me? 44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy. 45 And ^ablessed is she who ¹believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her ²by the Lord.”

46 And Mary said:“^aMy soul ^1bexalts the Lord,

56 And Mary stayed with her about three months, and then returned to her home.

57 Now the time ¹had come for Elizabeth to give birth, and she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had ^1adisplayed His great mercy toward her; and they were rejoicing with her.

59 And it happened that on ^athe eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to call him Zacharias, ¹after his father. 60 But his mother answered and said, “No indeed; but ^ahe shall be called John.” 61 And they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by that name.” 62 And they ^amade signs to his father, as to what he wanted him called. 63 And he asked for a tablet and wrote as follows, “^aHis name is John.” And they were all astonished. 64 ^aAnd at once his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he began to speak in praise of God. 65 Fear came on all those living around them; and all these matters were being talked about in all ^athe hill country of Judea. 66 All who heard them kept them in mind, saying, “What then will this child turn out to be?” For ^athe hand of the Lord was certainly with him.

67 And his father Zacharias ^awas filled with the Holy Spirit, and ^bprophesied, saying:

80 ^aAnd the child continued to grow and to become strong in spirit, and he lived in the deserts until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

Since as is well known many have undertaken to compile an orderly account of the things which have been ^afulfilled among us by God, 2 exactly as they were handed down to us by those with personal experience who ^afrom the beginning of Christ’s ministry were ^beyewitnesses and ^cministers of ^dthe word that is, of the teaching concerning salvation through faith in Christ, 3 it seemed fitting for ¹me as well, and so I have decided after ^ahaving carefully searched out and investigated all the events accurately, from the very beginning, to write ^ban orderly account for you, ^cmost excellent ^dTheophilus; Acts 1:1 4 so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been ^1ataught that is, the history and doctrine of the faith.

5 ^aIn the days of Herod the Great, king of Judea, there was a certain priest whose name was ¹Zacharias, of ^2bthe division of Abijah. His wife was ³a descendant of Aaron the first high priest of Israel, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 They both were ^arighteous (approved) in the sight of God, walking ^bblamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord. 7 But they were childless, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both far advanced in years.

8 Now it happened while Zacharias was ^aserving as priest before God in the appointed order of his priestly division, 9 as was the custom of the priesthood, he was chosen by lot ^ato enter the sanctuary of the temple of the Lord and ¹burn incense on the altar of incense. Ex 30:7 10 And all the congregation was praying ^aoutside in the court of the temple at the hour of the incense offering. 11 And ^aan angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense. 12 When Zacharias saw the angel, he was troubled and ^aovercome with fear. 13 But the angel said to him, “^aDo not be afraid, Zacharias, because your petition in prayer was heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and ^byou will name him ¹John. 14 You will have great joy and delight, and many will rejoice over his birth, 15 for he will be great and distinguished in the sight of the Lord; and will never ^adrink wine or liquor, and he will be filled with and empowered to act by the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb. Num 6:3 16 He will ^aturn many of the sons of Israel back from sin to love and serve the Lord their God. 17 It is he who will ^ago as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of ^bElijah, ^cTO TURN THE HEARTS OF THE FATHERS BACK TO THE CHILDREN, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous which is to seek and submit to the will of God—in order to ^dmake ready a people perfectly prepared spiritually and morally for the Lord.” Is 40:3; Mal 4:5, 6

18 And Zacharias said to the angel, “How will I be certain of this? For ^aI am an old man and my wife is advanced in age.” 19 The angel replied and said to him, “I am ^aGabriel; I ^bstand and minister in the very presence of God, and I have been sent by Him to speak to you and to bring you this good news. Dan 8:16; 9:21 20 ¹Listen carefully, you will be continually silent and unable to speak until the day when these things take place, because you did not believe what I told you; but my words will be fulfilled at their proper time.”

21 The people outside in the court were waiting for Zacharias, and were wondering about his long delay in the temple. 22 But when he did come out, he was unable to speak to them. They realized that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he ^akept making signs to them, and remained mute. 23 When his time of priestly service was finished, he returned to his home.

24 Now after this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant, and for five months she secluded herself completely, saying, 25 “This is how the Lord has dealt with me in the days when He looked with favor on me, to ^atake away my ¹disgrace among men.” Gen 30:23; Is 4:1

26 Now in the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy the angel ^aGabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called ^bNazareth, 27 to ^aa virgin ¹betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, ^ba descendant of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And coming to her, the angel said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” 29 But she ^awas greatly perplexed at what he said, and kept carefully considering what kind of greeting this was. 30 The angel said to her, “^aDo not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 Listen carefully: you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and you ^ashall name Him Jesus. 32 He will be great and eminent and will be called the Son of ^athe Most High; and the Lord God will give Him ^bthe throne of His father David; 33 ^aand He will reign over the house of Jacob (Israel) forever, ^band of His kingdom there shall be no end.” Is 9:6, 7; Dan 2:44 34 Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin and have no intimacy with any man?” 35 Then the angel replied to her, “^aThe Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of ^bthe Most High will overshadow you like a cloud; for that reason ^cthe holy (pure, sinless) Child shall be called ^dthe Son of God. Ex 40:34; Is 7:14 36 And listen, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month. 37 For with God ^anothing is or ever shall be impossible.” 38 Then Mary said, “¹Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel left her.

39 Now at this time Mary arose and hurried to ^athe hill country, to a city of Judah (Judea) , 40 and she entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, her baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was ^afilled with the Holy Spirit and empowered by Him. 42 And she exclaimed loudly, “Blessed worthy to be praised are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 And how has it happened to me, that the mother of ^amy Lord would come to me? 44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And ^ablessed spiritually fortunate and favored by God is she who believed and confidently trusted that there would be a fulfillment of the things that were spoken to her by the angel sent from the Lord.”

46 And Mary said,“^aMy soul ^bmagnifies and exalts the Lord,

56 And Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months, and then returned to her home.

57 Now the time had come for Elizabeth to give birth, and she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had ^ashown His great mercy toward her, and they were rejoicing with her.

59 It happened that on ^athe eighth day they came to circumcise the child as required by the Law, and they intended to name him Zacharias, after his father; Gen 17:12; Lev 12:3 60 but his mother answered, “No indeed; instead ^ahe will be called John.” 61 And they said to her, “None of your relatives is called by that name.” 62 Then they ^amade signs to his father, as to what he wanted him called. 63 And he asked for a writing tablet and wrote as follows, “^aHis name is John.” And they were all astonished. 64 ^aAt once Zacharias’ mouth was opened and his tongue freed, and he began speaking, praising and blessing and thanking God. 65 Then fear came on all their neighbors; and all these things were discussed throughout ^athe hill country of Judea. 66 All who heard these things kept them in mind, saying, “What then will this little boy turn out to be?” For ^athe hand of the Lord was certainly with him to bring about his birth.

67 Now Zacharias his father ^awas filled with the Holy Spirit and empowered by Him, and he ^bprophesied, saying,

80 ^aThe child continued to grow and to become strong in spirit, and he lived in the deserts until the day of his public appearance to Israel as John the Baptist, the forerunner of the Messiah.
