Profecía sobre Egipto

Palabra del SEÑOR que vino al profeta Jeremías acerca de las naciones^a. 2 ^aA Egipto, acerca del ejército de Faraón Necao, rey de Egipto, que estaba junto al río Eufrates en Carquemis, al cual derrotó Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, en el año cuarto de Joacim^b, hijo de Josías^c, rey de Judá^d:

3 Preparad escudo y broquel,y avanzad hacia la batalla^a.4 Aparejad los caballos,montad los corceles¹y presentaos con los yelmos puestos.Bruñid las lanzas^a,vestíos las corazas^b.5 ¿Pero qué es lo que veo?Están aterrados,retroceden^a,y sus valientes están deshechos^b;en la huida buscan refugiosin mirar atrás.Hay terror por todas partes¹^c—declara el SEÑOR.6 Que no huya el ligero^a,ni escape el poderoso;en el norte, junto al río Eufrates,han tropezado y caído^b.7 ¿Quién eseste que sube como el Nilo,cuyas aguas se agitan como ríos^a?8 Egipto sube como el Nilo,cuyas aguas se agitan como ríos,pero Él ha dicho: Subiré y cubriré esa tierra^a;ciertamente destruiré la ciudad y sus habitantes^b.9 Subid, caballos, y corred furiosos¹, carros,para que avancen^a los poderosos:Etiopía²^b y Put³, que manejan escudo,y los de Lud⁴, que manejan y entesan el arco^c.10 Porque aquel día es para el Señor, DIOS¹^a de los ejércitos,día de venganza^b, para vengarse de sus enemigos;la espada devorará y se saciaráy se empapará con su sangre^c;pues habrá una matanza² para el Señor, DIOS³^d de los ejércitos,en la tierra del norte, junto al río Eufrates.11 Sube a Galaad y consigue bálsamo^a,virgen^b, hija de Egipto.En vano has multiplicado los remedios¹;no hay curación para ti^c.12 Han oído las naciones de tu afrenta^a,y tu clamor^b llena la tierra;porque guerrero con guerrero ha tropezado^c,y a una han caído ambos.

13 Palabra que el SEÑOR habló al profeta Jeremías acerca de la venida de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, para herir la tierra de Egipto^a:

14 Anunciad en Egipto y hacedlo oír en Migdol,hacedlo oír también en Menfis¹ y en Tafnes^a;decid: «Ponte en pie y prepárate,porque la espada ha devorado a los que te rodean^b».15 ¿Por qué han quedado postrados tus valientes^a?No se mantienen en pie porque el SEÑOR los ha derribado^b.16 Han tropezado muchas veces;en verdad, han caído uno sobre otro^a.Entonces dijeron: «Levántate y volvamosa nuestro pueblo y a nuestra tierra^b natal,ante la espada opresora¹^c».17 Allí gritaron: «Faraón, rey de Egipto^a, essolo un gran ruido¹;ha dejado pasar el tiempo señalado».18 Vivo yo—declara el Reycuyo nombre es el SEÑOR de los ejércitos^a—que ciertamente como se destaca el Tabor^b entre los montes,o el Carmelo^c junto al mar, uno ha de venir.19 Prepara tu equipaje para el destierro^a,hija^b que moras en Egipto,porque Menfis¹ será convertida en desolación^c,incendiada y despoblada.20 Novilla^a hermosa es Egipto,mas un tábano¹ del norte viene^b; ya viene.21 Sus mercenarios también son en medio de ellacomo becerros engordados¹^a;porque también ellos se han vuelto atrás^b,y a una han huido, no resistieron;porque el día de su ruina ha venido sobre ellos,la hora de su castigo^c.22 Se oye¹ su sonido como el de una serpiente,pues el enemigo avanza como un ejército²;con hachas, como leñadores, vienen contra ella.23 Talan su bosque—declara el SEÑOR^a—aunque sea impenetrable,aunque sean¹ más numerosos que las langostas,innumerables^b.24 Es avergonzada la hija de Egipto,es entregada al poder¹ del pueblo del norte^a.

25 Dice el SEÑOR de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: He aquí, castigaré a Amón de Tebas^a, a Faraón^b y a Egipto^c junto con sus dioses^d y sus reyes; a Faraón y a los que en él confían. 26 Y los entregaré en manos de los que buscan su vida, en manos de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia^a, y en manos de su siervo^b. Mas después será habitado como en los días de antaño—declara el SEÑOR.

27 ^aPero tú no temas, siervo mío Jacob,ni te atemorices, Israel;porque he aquí, te salvaré de lugar remoto,y a tu descendencia¹ de la tierra de su cautiverio.Y volverá Jacob, y estará tranquilo^by seguro^c, y nadie lo atemorizará^d.28 Tú no temas, siervo mío Jacob—declara el SEÑOR—porque yo estoy contigo^a;pues acabaré con todas las nacionesadonde te he expulsado,pero no acabaré contigo^b,sino que te castigaré con justicia;de ninguna manera te dejaré sin castigo^c.

Defeat of Pharaoh Foretold

That which came as the word of the LORD to Jeremiah the prophet ^aconcerning the nations.

2 To ^aEgypt, concerning the army of ^bPharaoh Neco king of Egypt, which was by the Euphrates River at ^cCarchemish, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated in the ^dfourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:

3 “^aLine up the shield and ¹buckler,And draw near for the battle!4 “Harness the horses,And ¹mount the steeds,And take your stand with helmets on!^aPolish the spears,Put on the ^bscale-armor!5 “Why have I seen it?They are terrified,They are ^adrawing back,And their ^bmighty men are defeatedAnd have taken refuge in flight,Without facing back;¹^cTerror is on every side!”Declares the LORD.6 Let not the ^aswift man flee,Nor the mighty man escape;In the north beside the river EuphratesThey have ^bstumbled and fallen.7 Who is this that ^arises like the Nile,Like the rivers whose waters surge about?8 Egypt rises like the Nile,Even like the rivers whose waters surge about;And He has said, “I will ^arise and cover that land;I will surely ^bdestroy the city and its inhabitants.”9 Go up, you horses, and ¹^adrive madly, you chariots,That the mighty men may ²march forward:Ethiopia and ³^bPut, that handle the shield,And the ⁴^cLydians, that handle and bend the bow.10 For ^athat day belongs to the Lord ¹GOD of hosts,A day of ^bvengeance, so as to avenge Himself on His foes;And the ^csword will devour and be satiatedAnd ²drink its fill of their blood;For there will be a ^dslaughter for the Lord ³GOD of hosts,In the land of the north by the river Euphrates.11 Go ^aup to Gilead and obtain balm,^bO virgin daughter of Egypt!In vain have you multiplied ¹remedies;There is ^cno healing for you.12 The nations have heard of your ^ashame,And the earth is full of your ^bcry of distress;For one ^cwarrior has stumbled over ¹another,And both of them have fallen down together.

13 This is the ¹message which the LORD spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the ^acoming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to ^bsmite the land of Egypt:

14 “Declare in Egypt and proclaim in ^aMigdol,Proclaim also in Memphis and ^bTahpanhes;Say, ‘Take your stand and get yourself ready,For the ^csword has devoured those around you.’15 “Why have your ^amighty ones become prostrate?They do not stand because the LORD has ^bthrust them down.16 “They have repeatedly ^astumbled;Indeed, they have fallen one against another.Then they said, ‘Get up! And ^blet us go backTo our own people and our native landAway from the ¹^csword of the oppressor.’17 “¹They cried there, ‘Pharaoh king of Egypt is but ^aa big noise;He has let the appointed time pass by!’18 “As I live,” declares the ^aKingWhose name is the LORD of hosts,“Surely one shall come who looms up like ^bTabor among the mountains,Or like ^cCarmel by the sea.19 “Make your baggage ready for ^aexile,O ^bdaughter dwelling in Egypt,For ^cMemphis will become a desolation;It will even be burned down and ¹bereft of inhabitants.20 “Egypt is a pretty ^aheifer,But a ¹horsefly is coming ^bfrom the north—it is coming!21 “Also her ^amercenaries in her midstAre like ¹fattened ^bcalves,For even they too have turned back and have fled away together;They did not stand their ground.For the day of their calamity has come upon them,The time of their ^cpunishment.22 “Its sound moves along like a serpent;For they move on ¹like an armyAnd come to her as woodcutters with axes.23 “They have cut down her ^aforest,” declares the LORD;“Surely it will no more be found,Even though ¹they are now more numerous than ^blocustsAnd are without number.24 “The daughter of Egypt has been put to shame,Given over to the ¹power of the ^apeople of the north.”

25 The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says, “Behold, I am going to punish Amon of ^aThebes, and ^bPharaoh, and Egypt along with her ^cgods and her kings, even Pharaoh and those who ^dtrust in him. 26 I shall give them over to the ¹power of those who are ^aseeking their lives, even into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of his ²officers. ^bAfterwards, however, it will be inhabited as in the days of old,” declares the LORD.

27 “But as for you, O Jacob My servant, ^ado not fear,Nor be dismayed, O Israel!For, see, I am going to ^bsave you from afar,And your descendants from the land of their captivity;And Jacob will return and be ^cundisturbedAnd secure, with no one making him tremble.28 “O Jacob My servant, do not fear,” declares the LORD,“For ^aI am with you.For I will make a full end of all the nationsWhere I have driven you,Yet I will ^bnot make a full end of you;But I will ^ccorrect you properlyAnd by no means leave you unpunished.”

Defeat of Pharaoh Foretold

The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet ^aconcerning the Gentile nations.

2 Concerning ^aEgypt, against the army of ^bPharaoh Neco king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates at ^cCarchemish, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon ¹defeated decisively in the ^dfourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah: Is 19-20; Ezek 29-32; Zech 14:18, 19

3 “^aLine up the ¹buckler (small shield) and large shield,And advance for battle!4 “Harness the horses,And mount, you riders!Take your stand with your helmets!^aPolish the spears,Put on the ^bcoats of mail!5 “Why have I seen it?They are terrifiedAnd have ^aturned back,And their ^bwarriors are beaten down.They take flight in hasteWithout looking back;^cTerror is on every side!”Says the LORD. Ps 31:13; Jer 6:25; 20:3, 10; 49:296 Do not let the ^aswift man run,Nor the mighty man escape;In the north by the river EuphratesThey have ^bstumbled and fallen.7 Who is this that ^arises up like the Nile River,Like the rivers in the delta of Egypt whose waters surge about?8 Egypt rises like the Nile,Even like the rivers whose waters surge about.And ¹He has said, “I will ^arise, I will cover that land;I will certainly ^bdestroy the city and its inhabitants.”9 Charge, you horses,And ^adrive like madmen, you chariots!Let the warriors go forward:Ethiopia and ^bPut (Libya) who handle the shield,And the ^cLydians who handle and bend the bow.10 For ^athat day belongs to the Lord GOD of hosts,A day of vengeance, that He may ^bavenge Himself on His adversaries.And the ^csword will devour and be satiatedAnd drink its fill of their blood;For the Lord GOD of hosts has a ^dsacrifice like that of a great sin offeringIn the north country by the river Euphrates.11 Go ^aup to Gilead and obtain healing balm,^bO Virgin Daughter of Egypt!In vain you use many medicines;For you there is ^cno healing or remedy.12 The nations have heard of your ^adisgrace and shame,And your ^bcry of distress has filled the earth.For ^cwarrior has stumbled against warrior,And both of them have fallen together.

13 The word that the LORD spoke to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the ^acoming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to ^bstrike the land of Egypt:

14 “Declare in Egypt and proclaim in ¹^aMigdol,And proclaim in ²Memphis and in ^bTahpanhes;Say, ‘Take your stand and get yourself ready,For the ^csword has devoured those around you.’15 “Why have your ^astrong ones been cut down?They do not stand because the LORD ^bdrove them away.16 “He will make many ^astumble and fall;Yes, they have fallen one on another.Then they said, ‘Arise, and ^blet us go backTo our own people and to the land of our birth,Away from the ^csword of the oppressor.’17 “They cried there, ‘Pharaoh king of Egypt is destroyed and is merely ^aa loud noise;He has let the appointed time of opportunity pass by!’18 “As I live,” says the ^aKing,Whose name is the LORD of hosts,“Surely like ¹^bTabor among the mountainsOr like ^cCarmel by the sea,So shall he the great king of Babylon come.19 “O you ^adaughter who dwells in Egypt and you who dwell with her,Prepare yourselves with all you will need to go into ^bexile,For ^cMemphis will become desolate;It will even be burned down and without inhabitant.20 “Egypt is a very pretty ^aheifer,But a horsefly (Babylonia) is coming against her ^bout of the north!21 “Also her ^amercenaries in her armyAre like fattened ^bcalves,For they too have turned back and have fled together;They did not stand their ground,Because the day of their disaster has come upon them,The time of their ^cpunishment.22 “The sound of Egypt fleeing from the enemy is like the rustling of an escaping serpent,For her foes advance with a mighty armyAnd come against her like woodcutters with axes.23 “They have cut down her ^aforest,” says the LORD;“Certainly it will no longer be found,Because they (the invaders) are more numerous than ^blocustsAnd cannot be counted.24 “The Daughter of Egypt has been shamed,Given over to the power of the ^apeople of the north the Chaldeans of Babylonia.”

25 The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says, “Behold, I am going to punish Amon chief god of the sacred city of ^aThebes the capital of Upper Egypt, and ^bPharaoh, and Egypt along with her ^cgods and her kings—even Pharaoh and those who put their ^dtrust in him as a shield against Babylon. 26 I will put them into the hand of those who ^aseek their lives, and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of his servants. ^bAfterward Egypt will be ¹inhabited as in the days of old,” says the LORD.

27 “But as for you, ^ado not fear, O My servant Jacob,Nor be dismayed, O Israel!For behold, I will ^bsave you from your captivity in a distant land,And your descendants from the land of their exile;And Jacob will return and be ^cquiet and secure,And no one will make him afraid.28 “Do not fear, O Jacob My servant,” says the LORD,“For ^aI am with you.For I will make a full and complete end of all the nationsTo which I have driven you;Yet I will ^bnot make a full end of you.But I will ^cdiscipline and correct you appropriatelyAnd by no means will I declare you guiltless or leave you unpunished.”
