^aDespués de estos actos de¹ fidelidad, Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, vino e invadió a Judá y sitió las ciudades fortificadas, y mandó conquistarlas² para sí. 2 Cuando vio Ezequías que Senaquerib había venido y que se proponía hacer¹ guerra contra Jerusalén, 3 decidió con sus oficiales y guerreros cortar el agua de las fuentes que estaban fuera de la ciudad, y ellos le ayudaron. 4 Y se reunió mucha gente y cegaron todas las fuentes^a y el arroyo que fluía por la región^1b, diciendo: ¿Por qué han de venir los reyes de Asiria y hallar tanta agua? 5 Y él cobró ánimo y reedificó toda la muralla que había sido derribada^a y levantó torres en ella¹, edificó otra muralla exterior^b, fortificó el Milo^c en la ciudad de David, e hizo armas arrojadizas y escudos en gran cantidad. 6 Puso también oficiales militares sobre el pueblo, los reunió a su lado en la plaza a la puerta de la ciudad y habló dándoles ánimo^1a, diciendo: 7 Sed fuertes y valientes; no temáis ni os acobardéis^a a causa del rey de Asiria, ni a causa de toda la multitud que está con él, porque el que está con nosotros es más poderoso que el que está con él^b. 8 Con él estásolo un brazo de carne^a, pero con nosotros está el SEÑOR nuestro Dios para ayudarnos y pelear nuestras batallas^b. Y el pueblo confió en las palabras de Ezequías, rey de Judá.

9 Después de esto, Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, mientras estaba sitiando¹ Laquis con todas sus fuerzas, envió a sus siervos a Jerusalén, a² Ezequías, rey de Judá, y a³ todos los de Judá que estaban en Jerusalén^a, diciendo: 10 Así dice Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, «¿En qué estáis confiando para que permanezcáis bajo sitio en Jerusalén? 11 ¿No os engaña Ezequías para entregaros a morir de hambre y de sed, diciendo: “El SEÑOR nuestro Dios nos librará de la mano¹ del rey de Asiria”? 12 ¿Acaso no es el mismo Ezequías el que ha quitado sus lugares altos y sus altares^a, y ha dicho a Judá y a Jerusalén¹: “Delante de un solo altar adoraréis, y sobre él quemaréis incienso”? 13 ^a¿No sabéis lo que yo y mis padres hemos hecho a todos los pueblos de estas¹ tierras? ¿Pudieron los dioses de las naciones de las tierras librar su tierra de mi mano? 14 ¿Quién de entre todos los dioses de aquellas naciones que mis padres destruyeron completamente pudo librar a su pueblo de mi mano, para que vuestro Dios pueda libraros de mi mano^a? 15 Ahora pues, no dejéis que Ezequías os engañe y os extravíe en esta forma, y no creáis en él, porque ningún dios de ninguna nación ni reino pudo librar a su pueblo de mi mano ni de la mano de mis padres. ¡Mucho menos os librará de mi mano vuestro Dios^a!».

16 Y sus siervos hablaron aún más contra el SEÑOR Dios y contra su siervo Ezequías. 17 También escribió cartas para insultar al SEÑOR, Dios de Israel, y para hablar contra Él, diciendo: Como los dioses de las naciones de las tierras no han¹ librado a sus pueblos de mi mano, así el Dios de Ezequías no librará a su pueblo de mi mano^a. 18 Y proclamaron esto a gran voz en la lengua de Judá^1a al pueblo de Jerusalén que estaba sobre la muralla, para espantarlos y aterrorizarlos, para así poder tomar la ciudad. 19 Y hablaron del¹ Dios de Jerusalén como de los dioses de los pueblos de la tierra, obra de manos de hombres^a.

20 Pero el rey Ezequías y el profeta Isaías, hijo de Amoz, oraron sobre esto, y clamaron al cielo. 21 Y el SEÑOR envió un ángel que destruyó a todo guerrero valiente, comandante y jefe en el campamento del rey de Asiria. Así regresó avergonzado¹ a su propia tierra. Y cuando había entrado al templo² de su dios, algunos de sus propios hijos lo mataron allí a espada. 22 Así salvó el SEÑOR a Ezequías y a los habitantes de Jerusalén^a de mano de Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, y de mano de todos los demás, y los guio¹ por todas partes. 23 Y muchos traían presentes al SEÑOR en Jerusalén y presentes valiosos^a a Ezequías, rey de Judá, de modo que después de esto fue engrandecido delante de todas las naciones^b.

27 Y tenía Ezequías inmensas riquezas y honores. Hizo para sí depósitos¹ para plata, oro, piedras preciosas, especias, escudos y toda clase de objetos de valor. 28 Hizo también almacenes para el producto de granos, vino y aceite, corrales para toda clase de ganado y apriscos para los rebaños¹. 29 Se edificó ciudades y adquirió rebaños y ganados en abundancia, porque Dios le había dado muchísimas riquezas^1a. 30 Ezequías fue el que cegó la salida superior de las aguas^a de Gihón^b y las condujo al lado occidental de la ciudad de David. Ezequías prosperó en todo lo que hizo. 31 Aun en el asunto de los enviados por los gobernantes de Babilonia^a, que lo mandaron a él para investigar la maravilla^b que había acontecido en el país, Dios lo dejó solo para probarle^c, a fin de saber Él todo lo que había en su corazón.

32 Los demás hechos de Ezequías y sus obras piadosas, he aquí, están escritos en la visión del profeta Isaías, hijo de Amoz, y en el libro de los reyes de Judá y de Israel. 33 Y durmió Ezequías con sus padres, y lo sepultaron en la parte superior de¹ los sepulcros de los hijos de David; y todo Judá y los habitantes de Jerusalén le rindieron honores en su muerte^a. After these ¹acts of faithfulness ^aSennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah and besieged the fortified cities, and ²thought to break into them for himself. 2 Now when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and that ¹he intended to make war on Jerusalem, 3 he decided with his officers and his warriors to cut off the supply of water from the springs which were outside the city, and they helped him. 4 So many people assembled ^aand stopped up all the springs and ^bthe stream which flowed ¹through the region, saying, “Why should the kings of Assyria come and find abundant water?” 5 And he took courage and ^arebuilt all the wall that had been broken down and ¹erected towers on it, and built ^banother outside wall and strengthened the ^cMillo in the city of David, and made weapons and shields in great number. 6 He appointed military officers over the people and gathered them to him in the square at the city gate, and ^aspoke ¹encouragingly to them, saying, 7 “^aBe strong and courageous, do not fear or be dismayed because of the king of Assyria nor because of all the horde that is with him; ^bfor the one with us is greater than the one with him. 8 With him is only ^aan arm of flesh, but ^bwith us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles.” And the people relied on the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

9 After this ^aSennacherib king of Assyria sent his servants to Jerusalem while he was ¹besieging Lachish with all his forces with him, against Hezekiah king of Judah and against all Judah who were at Jerusalem, saying, 10 “Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria, ‘On what are you trusting that you are remaining in Jerusalem under siege? 11 Is not Hezekiah misleading you to give yourselves over to die by hunger and by thirst, saying, “The LORD our God will deliver us from the ¹hand of the king of Assyria”? 12 ^aHas not the same Hezekiah taken away His high places and His altars, and said to Judah and ¹Jerusalem, “You shall worship before one altar, and on it you shall ²burn incense”? 13 Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? ^aWere the gods of the nations of the lands able at all to deliver their land from my hand? 14 ^aWho was there among all the gods of those nations which my fathers utterly destroyed who could deliver his people out of my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you from my hand? 15 Now therefore, do not let Hezekiah deceive you or mislead you like this, and do not believe him, for ^ano god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you from my hand?’”

16 His servants spoke further against the LORD God and against His servant Hezekiah. 17 He also wrote letters to insult the LORD God of Israel, and to speak against Him, saying, “^aAs the gods of the nations of the lands ¹have not delivered their people from my hand, so the God of Hezekiah will not deliver His people from my hand.” 18 ^aThey called this out with a loud voice in the language of Judah to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to frighten and terrify them, so that they might take the city. 19 They spoke ¹of the God of Jerusalem as of ^athe gods of the peoples of the earth, the work of men’s hands.

20 But King Hezekiah and Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, prayed about this and cried out to heaven. 21 And the LORD sent an angel who destroyed every mighty warrior, commander and officer in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned ¹in shame to his own land. And when he had entered the temple of his god, some of his own children killed him there with the sword. 22 So the LORD ^asaved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria and from the hand of all others, and ¹guided them on every side. 23 And ^amany were bringing gifts to the LORD at Jerusalem and choice presents to Hezekiah king of Judah, so that ^bhe was exalted in the sight of all nations thereafter.

24 ^aIn those days Hezekiah became ¹mortally ill; and he prayed to the LORD, and ²the LORD spoke to him and gave him a sign. 25 But Hezekiah gave no return for the benefit ¹he received, ^abecause his heart was ²proud; ^btherefore wrath came on him and on Judah and Jerusalem. 26 However, ^aHezekiah ¹humbled the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD did not come on them in the days of Hezekiah.

27 Now Hezekiah had immense riches and honor; and he made for himself treasuries for silver, gold, precious stones, spices, shields and all kinds of valuable articles, 28 storehouses also for the produce of grain, wine and oil, pens for all kinds of cattle and ¹sheepfolds for the flocks. 29 He made cities for himself and acquired flocks and herds in abundance, for ^aGod had given him very great ¹wealth. 30 It was Hezekiah who ^astopped the upper outlet of the waters of ^bGihon and directed them to the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all that he did. 31 Even in the matter of ^athe envoys of the rulers of Babylon, who sent to him to inquire of ^bthe wonder that had happened in the land, God left him alone only ^cto test him, that He might know all that was in his heart.

32 Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah and his deeds of devotion, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel. 33 So Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the ¹upper section of the tombs of the sons of David; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem ^ahonored him at his death. And his son Manasseh became king in his place.

After these things and this faithfulness, ^aSennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah and besieged the fortified cities, intending to take them for himself. 2 When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and that he intended to go to war against Jerusalem, 3 he decided, together with his officers and his soldiers, to stop up the water supply from the springs which were outside the city by enclosing them with masonry and concealing them, and they helped him. 4 So many people came together, ^aand they stopped up all the springs and ^bthe brook which flowed underground through the region, saying, “Why should the kings of Assyria come and find an abundance of water?” 5 Also Hezekiah resolutely set to work and ^arebuilt all the wall that had been broken down, and erected towers on it, and he built ^banother wall outside and strengthened the ^cMillo (fortification) in the City of David, and made a great number of weapons and shields. 6 He also appointed military officers over the people and gathered them to him in the square at the city gate, and ^aspoke ¹encouragingly to them, saying, 7 “^aBe strong and courageous. Do not fear or be dismayed because of the king of Assyria, nor because of all the army that is with him; ^bfor the One with us is greater than the one with him. 8 With him there is only ^aan arm of flesh, but ^bwith us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles.” And the people relied on the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

9 After this, ^aSennacherib king of Assyria, while he was at Lachish besieging it with all his forces, sent his servants to Jerusalem, to Hezekiah king of Judah, and to all Judah who were at Jerusalem, saying, 10 “Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria, ‘In what do you trust that you are remaining in Jerusalem under siege? 11 Is not Hezekiah misleading you in order to let you die by famine and thirst, while saying, “The LORD our God will rescue us from the hand of the king of Assyria?” 12 ^aHas the same Hezekiah not taken away ¹his Baal’s high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, “You shall worship before only one altar and burn incense on it”? 13 Do you not know what I and my fathers (ancestors) have done to all the peoples of the other lands? ^aWere the gods of the nations of those lands able to rescue their lands from my hand at all? 14 ^aWho was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed who was able to rescue his people from my hand, that your God should be able to rescue you from my hand? 15 So now, do not let Hezekiah deceive or mislead you like this, and do not believe him, for ^ano god of any nation or kingdom has been able to rescue his people from my hand or the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God rescue you from my hand!’”

16 And his servants said even more against the LORD God and against His servant Hezekiah. 17 The Assyrian king also wrote letters insulting and taunting the LORD God of Israel, and speaking against Him, saying, “^aAs the gods of the nations of other lands have not rescued their people from my hand, so the God of Hezekiah will not rescue His people from my hand.” 18 ^aThey shouted it loudly in the language of Judah to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to frighten and terrify them, so that they might take the city without a long siege. 19 They spoke of the God of Jerusalem as they spoke of ^athe gods of the peoples of the earth, which are only the work of the hands of men.

20 But Hezekiah the king and the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz prayed about this and cried out to heaven for help. 21 And the LORD sent an angel who destroyed every brave warrior, commander, and officer in the camp of the king of Assyria. So the king returned to his own land in shame. And when he entered the house (temple) of his god, some of his own children killed him there with the sword. 2+@Kin 19:35-37 22 Thus the LORD ^asaved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria and from the hand of all others, and He gave them rest on every side. 23 And ^amany brought gifts to the LORD at Jerusalem and valuable presents to Hezekiah king of Judah; so from then on ^bhe was exalted in the sight of all nations.

24 ^aIn those days Hezekiah became terminally ill; and he prayed to the LORD, and He answered him and gave him a miraculous sign. 25 But Hezekiah did nothing for the LORD in return for the benefit bestowed on him, ^abecause his heart had become proud; ^btherefore God’s wrath came on him and on Judah and Jerusalem. 26 However, ^aHezekiah humbled his proud heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD did not come on them during the days of Hezekiah.

27 Now Hezekiah had immense wealth and honor; and he made for himself treasuries for silver, gold, precious stones, spices, shields, and all kinds of delightful articles, 28 and storehouses for the produce of grain, new wine, and olive oil, and stalls for all kinds of cattle, and sheepfolds for the flocks. 29 Moreover, he made cities for himself and acquired an abundance of flocks and herds, for ^aGod gave him very many possessions. 30 This same Hezekiah also ^astopped up the upper outlet of the waters of ^bGihon and channeled them down to the west side of the City of David. Hezekiah succeeded in everything that he did. 31 And so in the matter of ^athe envoys of the rulers of Babylon, who were sent to him to inquire about ^bthe wonder that had happened in the land, God left him alone only ^cto test him, in order to know everything that was in his heart.
