José se echó sobre el rostro de su padre, lloró sobre él y lo besó. 2 Y ordenó José a sus siervos médicos que embalsamaran a su padre; y los médicos embalsamaron a Israel^a. 3 Y se requerían¹ cuarenta días para ello², porque este es el tiempo requerido para el embalsamamiento³. Y los egipcios lo lloraron setenta días^a.

4 Y cuando pasaron los días de luto¹ por él, habló José a la casa de Faraón, diciendo: Si he hallado ahora gracia ante vuestros ojos, os ruego que habléis a² Faraón, diciendo: 5 «Mi padre me hizo jurar^a, diciendo: “He aquí, voy a morir; en el sepulcro que cavé para mí en la tierra de Canaán, allí me sepultarás^b”. Ahora pues, te ruego que me permitas ir a sepultar a mi padre, y luego volveré». 6 Y Faraón dijo: Sube y sepulta a tu padre como él te hizo jurar. 7 Entonces José subió a sepultar a su padre, y con él subieron todos los siervos de Faraón, los ancianos de su casa y todos los ancianos de la tierra de Egipto, 8 y toda la casa de José, y sus hermanos, y la casa de su padre;solo dejaron a sus pequeños, sus ovejas y sus vacas en la tierra de Gosén. 9 Subieron también con él carros y jinetes; y era un cortejo¹ muy grande. 10 Cuando llegaron hasta la era de Atad¹, que está al otro lado del Jordán, hicieron allí duelo con una grande y dolorosa² lamentación^a; y José guardó³ siete días de duelo por su padre. 11 Y cuando los habitantes de la tierra, los cananeos, vieron el duelo de la era de Atad¹, dijeron: Este es un duelo doloroso² de los egipcios. Por eso llamaron al lugar Abel-mizrayim³, el cual está al otro lado del Jordán. 12 Sus hijos, pues, hicieron con él tal como les había mandado; 13 pues sus hijos lo llevaron a la tierra de Canaán, y lo sepultaron en la cueva del campo de Macpela, frente a Mamre, la cual Abraham había comprado de Efrón hitita, junto con el campo para posesión de una sepultura^a. 14 Y después de sepultar a su padre, José regresó a Egipto, él y sus hermanos, y todos los que habían subido con él para sepultar a su padre.

15 Al ver los hermanos de José que su padre había muerto, dijeron: Quizá José guarde rencor contra nosotros, y de cierto nos devuelva todo el mal que le hicimos^a. 16 Entonces enviaron¹ un mensaje a José, diciendo: Tu padre mandó antes de morir, diciendo: 17 «Así diréis a José: “Te ruego que perdones la maldad de tus hermanos y su pecado, porque ellos te trataron mal”». Y ahora, te rogamos que perdones la maldad de los siervos del Dios de tu padre. Y José lloró cuando le hablaron. 18 Entonces sus hermanos vinieron también y se postraron delante de él^a, y dijeron: He aquí, somos tus siervos. 19 Pero José les dijo: No temáis, ¿acaso estoy yo en lugar de Dios? 20 Vosotros pensasteis hacerme mal, pero Dios lo tornó en bien para que sucediera como vemos hoy, y se preservara la vida de mucha gente^a. 21 Ahora pues, no temáis; yo proveeré para vosotros y para vuestros hijos^1a. Y los consoló y les habló cariñosamente².

22 Y José se quedó en Egipto, él y la casa de su padre; y vivió José ciento diez años. 23 Y vio José la tercera generación de los hijos de Efraín; también los hijos de Maquir, hijo de Manasés, nacieron sobre las rodillas de José^a. 24 Y José dijo a sus hermanos: Yo voy a morir, pero Dios ciertamente os cuidará¹ y os hará subir de esta tierra a la tierra que Él prometió en juramento^2a a Abraham^b, a Isaac^c y a Jacob^d. 25 Luego José hizo jurar a los hijos de Israel, diciendo: Dios ciertamente os cuidará¹, y llevaréis mis huesos de aquí^a. 26 Y murió José a la edad de ciento diez años; y lo embalsamaron^a y lo pusieron en un ataúd en Egipto.

Then Joseph fell on his father’s face, and wept over him and kissed him. 2 Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians ^aembalmed Israel. 3 Now forty days were ¹required for ²it, for ³such is the period required for embalming. And the Egyptians ^awept for him seventy days.

4 When the days of ¹mourning for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found favor in your sight, please speak ²to Pharaoh, saying, 5 ‘^aMy father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am about to die; in my grave ^bwhich I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.” Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.’” 6 Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear.”

7 So Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household and all the elders of the land of Egypt, 8 and all the household of Joseph and his brothers and his father’s household; they left only their little ones and their flocks and their herds in the land of Goshen. 9 There also went up with him both chariots and horsemen; and it was a very great company. 10 When they came to the ¹threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they ^alamented there with a very great and ²sorrowful lamentation; and he ³observed seven days mourning for his father. 11 Now when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at ¹the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a ²grievous ³mourning for the Egyptians.” Therefore it was named ⁴Abel-mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.

12 Thus his sons did for him as he had charged them; 13 for his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in ^athe cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field for a ¹burial site from Ephron the Hittite. 14 After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers, and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.

15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “^aWhat if Joseph bears a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong which we did to him!” 16 So they ¹sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father charged before he died, saying, 17 ‘Thus you shall say to Joseph, “Please forgive, I beg you, the transgression of your brothers and their sin, for they did you wrong.”’ And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18 Then his brothers also came and ^afell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” 19 But Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in God’s place? 20 As for you, ^ayou meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about ¹this present result, to preserve many people alive. 21 So therefore, do not be afraid; ^aI will provide for you and your little ones.” So he comforted them and spoke ¹kindly to them.

22 Now Joseph stayed in Egypt, he and his father’s household, and Joseph lived one hundred and ten years. 23 Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim’s sons; also the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were ^aborn on Joseph’s knees. 24 Joseph said to his brothers, “^aI am about to die, but God will surely ¹take care of you and bring you up from this land to the land which He ²promised on oath to ^bAbraham, to ^cIsaac and to ^dJacob.” 25 Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, “God will surely ¹take care of you, and ^ayou shall carry my bones up from here.” 26 So Joseph died at the age of one hundred and ten years; and ¹he was ^aembalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt.

Then Joseph fell upon his father’s face, and wept over him and kissed him tenderly. 2 Then Joseph ordered his servants the physicians to embalm (mummify) his father. So the physicians ^aembalmed Israel (Jacob) . 3 Now forty days were required for this, for that is the customary number of days of preparation required for embalming. And the Egyptians ^awept and grieved for him in public mourning as they would for royalty for seventy days.

4 When the days of weeping and public mourning for him were past, Joseph spoke to the nobles of the house of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found favor in your sight, please speak to Pharaoh, saying, 5 ‘^aMy father made me swear an oath, saying, “Hear me, I am about to die; bury me in my tomb ^bwhich I prepared for myself in the land of Canaan.” So now let me go up to Canaan, please, and bury my father; then I will return.’” 6 And Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear.”

7 So Joseph went up to Canaan to bury his father, and with him went all the officials of Pharaoh, the nobles of his court and the elders of his household and all the nobles and the elders of the land of Egypt— 8 and all the household of Joseph and his brothers and his father’s household. They left only their little ones and their flocks and herds in the land of Goshen. 9 Both chariots and horsemen also went up to Canaan with Joseph; and it was a very great company. 10 When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they ^amourned there with a great lamentation (expressions of mourning for the deceased) and extreme demonstrations of sorrow according to Egyptian custom; and Joseph observed a seven-day mourning for his father. 11 When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a grievous mourning for the Egyptians.” Therefore the place was named Abel-mizraim (mourning of Egypt) ; it is west of the Jordan.

12 So Jacob’s sons did for him as he had commanded them; 13 for his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in ^athe cave of the field of Machpelah, east of Mamre, which Abraham bought along with the field as a burial site from Ephron the Hittite. 14 After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers, and all who had gone up with him.

15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “^aWhat if Joseph carries a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong which we did to him?” 16 So they sent word to Joseph, saying, “Your father commanded us before he died, saying, 17 ‘You are to say to Joseph, “I beg you, please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, for they did you wrong.”’ Now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18 Then his brothers went and ^afell down before him in confession; then they said, “Behold, we are your servants (slaves) .” 19 But Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God? Vengeance is His, not mine. 20 As for you, ^ayou meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present outcome, that many people would be kept alive as they are this day. 21 So now, do not be afraid; ^aI will provide for you and support you and your little ones.” So he comforted them giving them encouragement and hope and spoke with kindness to their hearts.

22 Now Joseph lived in Egypt, he and his father’s household, and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years. 23 Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim’s children; also the children of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were ^aborn and raised on Joseph’s knees. 24 Joseph said to his brothers, “^aI am about to die, but God will surely take care of you and bring you up out of this land to the land which He promised to ^bAbraham, to ^cIsaac, and to ^dJacob to give you.” 25 Then Joseph made the sons of Israel (Jacob) swear an oath, saying, “God will surely visit you and take care of you returning you to Canaan, and when that happens ^ayou shall carry my bones up from here.” 26 So Joseph died, being a hundred and ten years old; and they ^aembalmed him and he was put ¹in a coffin in Egypt.

22 Now Joseph stayed in Egypt, he and his father’s household, and Joseph lived 110 years. 23 Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim’s sons; also the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were ^aborn on Joseph’s knees. 24 Joseph said to his brothers, “^aI am about to die, but God will assuredly ¹take care of you and bring you up from this land to the land which He ²promised on oath to ^bAbraham, to ^cIsaac, and to ^dJacob.” 25 Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, “God will assuredly ¹take care of you, and ^ayou shall carry my bones up from here.” 26 So Joseph died at the age of 110 years; and they ^aembalmed him and placed him in a coffin in Egypt.
