^aEl SEÑOR habló a Moisés en las llanuras de Moab, junto al Jordán, frente a Jericó, diciendo: 2 Manda a los hijos de Israel que de la herencia de su posesión den a los levitas ciudades en que puedan habitar; también daréis a los levitas tierras de pasto alrededor de las ciudades. 3 Y las ciudades serán suyas para habitar; y sus tierras de pasto serán para sus animales, para sus ganados y para todas sus bestias^a.

4 Las tierras de pasto de las ciudades que daréis a los levitas se extenderán desde la muralla de la ciudad hacia afuera¹ mil codos² alrededor. 5 Mediréis también afuera de la ciudad, al lado oriental dos mil codos, al lado sur dos mil codos, al lado occidental dos mil codos, y al lado norte dos mil codos, con la ciudad en el centro. Esto será de ellos como tierras de pasto para las ciudades. 6 Las ciudades que daréis a los levitas serán las seis ciudades de refugio^a, las que daréis para que el homicida huya a ellas; además de ellas les daréis cuarenta y dos ciudades. 7 Todas las ciudades que daréis a los levitas serán cuarenta y ocho ciudades^a, junto¹ con sus tierras de pasto. 8 En cuanto a las ciudades que daréis de la posesión de los hijos de Israel, tomaréis más del más grande y tomaréis menos del más pequeño; cada uno dará algunas de sus ciudades a los levitas en proporción a la posesión que herede^a.

9 Luego el SEÑOR habló a Moisés, diciendo: 10 ^aHabla a los hijos de Israel, y diles: «Cuando crucéis el Jordán a la tierra de Canaán, 11 escogeréis para vosotros ciudades para que sean vuestras ciudades de refugio^a, a fin de que pueda huir allí el homicida que haya matado¹ a alguna persona sin intención^b. 12 Las ciudades serán para vosotros como refugio del vengador, para que el homicida no muera hasta que comparezca delante de la congregación para juicio^a. 13 Las ciudades que daréis serán vuestras seis ciudades de refugio. 14 Daréis tres ciudades al otro lado del Jordán y tres ciudades^a en¹ la tierra de Canaán; serán ciudades de refugio. 15 Estas seis ciudades serán por refugio para los hijos de Israel, y para el forastero y para el peregrino entre ellos, para que huya allí cualquiera que sin intención^a mate¹ a una persona.

16 »Pero si lo hirió con un objeto de hierro, y murió, es un asesino; al asesino ciertamente se le dará muerte^a. 17 Y si lo hirió con una piedra en la mano, por la cual pueda morir, y muere¹, es un asesino; al asesino ciertamente se le dará muerte^a. 18 O si lo golpeó con un objeto de madera en la mano, por lo cual pueda morir, y muere¹, es un asesino; al asesino ciertamente se le dará muerte. 19 El vengador de sangre, él mismo dará muerte al asesino; le dará muerte cuando se encuentre con él. 20 Y si lo empujó con odio^a, o le arrojó algo mientras lo acechaba, y murió^b, 21 o si lo hirió con la mano en enemistad, y murió, al que lo hirió ciertamente se le dará muerte; es un asesino. El vengador de sangre dará muerte al asesino cuando se encuentre con él.

22 »Pero si lo empujó súbitamente sin enemistad, o le arrojó algo sin acecharlo^a, 23 o tiró cualquier piedra que pudo matarlo, y sin ver que le cayó encima, murió, no siendo su enemigo ni procurando herirlo, 24 entonces la congregación juzgará entre el homicida y el vengador de la sangre conforme a estas ordenanzas^a. 25 Y la congregación librará al homicida de la mano del vengador de sangre, y la congregación lo restaurará a la ciudad de refugio a la cual huyó; y vivirá en ella hasta la muerte del sumo sacerdote que fue ungido con óleo santo. 26 Pero si el homicida sale en cualquier tiempo de los límites de la ciudad de refugio a la cual pudo huir, 27 y el vengador de sangre lo halla fuera de los límites de la ciudad de refugio, y el vengador de sangre mata al homicida, no será culpable de sangre, 28 porque el homicida debió haber permanecido en la ciudad de refugio hasta la muerte del sumo sacerdote. Pero después de la muerte del sumo sacerdote, el homicida volverá a su tierra¹.

29 »Estas cosas serán por norma de derecho^a para vosotros por vuestras generaciones en todas vuestras moradas. 30 Si alguno mata a una persona, al asesino se le dará muerte^a ante la evidencia¹ de testigos, pero a ninguna persona se le dará muerte por el testimonio de un solo testigo^b. 31 Además, no tomaréis rescate por la vida de un asesino que es culpable de muerte, sino que de cierto se le dará muerte; 32 y no tomaréis rescate por el que ha huido a la ciudad de refugio para que vuelva y habite en la tierra antes de¹ la muerte del sacerdote. 33 Así que no contaminaréis la tierra en que estáis; porque la sangre contamina la tierra^a, y no se puede hacer expiación por la tierra, por la sangre derramada en ella, excepto mediante la sangre del que la derramó^b. 34 Y no contaminaréis la tierra en que habitáis^a, en medio de la cual yo moro^b, pues yo, el SEÑOR, habito en medio de los hijos de Israel».

^aThen the LORD spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho, saying, 2 “Command the Israelites to give to the Levites cities to live in from the inheritance of their possession; and you shall give to the Levites pasture lands around the cities. 3 The cities shall be theirs to live in; and their pasture lands shall be for their cattle and for their herds and for all their livestock.

4 “The pasture lands around the cities which you shall give to the Levites shall reach from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits (1,500 ft.) around. 5 You shall also measure outside the city on the east, south, west, and north sides two thousand cubits (3,000 ft.) , with the city in the center. This shall belong to the Levites as pasture lands for the cities.

6 Among the cities which you give to the Levites shall be the ^asix cities of refuge, which you shall provide for the one who commits manslaughter to flee to; and in addition to them you shall give forty-two cities to the Levites. 7 So you shall give to the Levites ^aforty-eight cities in all, together with their pasture lands. 8 ^aAs for the cities which you shall give from the possession of the Israelites, from the larger tribes you shall take many and from the smaller tribes few; each tribe shall give at least some of its cities to the Levites in proportion to the size of its inheritance which it possesses.”

9 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 10 “^aTell the Israelites, ‘When you cross the Jordan River into the land of Canaan, 11 ^athen you shall select for yourselves cities to be ^bcities of refuge, so that the one who kills any person ^cunintentionally may escape there. 12 ^aThe cities shall be to you as a refuge from the avenger, so that the one who has caused the death of another will not be killed until he has had a fair trial before the congregation. 13 The cities which you are to provide shall be your six cities of refuge. 14 You ^ashall provide three cities on this east side of the Jordan River, and three more cities in the land of Canaan; they are to be the cities of refuge. 15 These six cities shall be a refuge for the Israelites and for the stranger and the resident alien among them; so that anyone who kills a person ^aunintentionally may escape there.

16 ‘^aBut if he struck ¹his victim down intentionally with an iron object so that he died, he is a murderer; the murderer shall certainly be put to death. 17 If he struck his victim down intentionally with a stone in hand, which may cause a person to die, and he died, he is a murderer; the murderer ^ashall certainly be put to death. 18 Or if he struck his victim down intentionally with a wooden object in hand, which may cause a person to die, and he died, he is a murderer; the murderer shall certainly be put to death. 19 The blood avenger shall himself put the murderer to death; he shall put him to death when he meets him. 20 But ^aif he pushed his victim out of hatred or threw something at him ^bwith malicious intent, and he died, 21 or if, in enmity, he struck the victim down with his hand, and he died, the one that struck the victim shall certainly be put to death; he is a murderer. The blood avenger shall put the murderer to death when he meets him.

22 ‘^aBut if he pushed the victim suddenly, not in enmity, or threw anything at him without malicious intent, 23 or without seeing him hit him accidentally with a stone object that could kill him, and he died, and the offender was not his enemy nor intending to harm him, 24 then ^athe congregation shall judge between the offender and the blood avenger according to these ordinances. 25 The congregation shall rescue the offender from the hand of the blood avenger and return him to his city of refuge, the place to which he had escaped; and he shall live there until the death of the high priest who was anointed with the sacred oil. 26 But if at any time the one guilty of manslaughter comes outside the border of his city of refuge to which he fled, 27 and the blood avenger finds him outside the border of his city of refuge and kills the offender, the blood avenger will not be guilty of murder, 28 because the offender should have remained in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest. But after the high priest’s death the offender shall return to the land of his possession.

29 ‘These things shall be a ^astatute for you throughout your generations wherever you may be.

30 ‘^aIf anyone kills a person intentionally, the murderer shall be put to death on the testimony of two or more witnesses; but ^bno one shall be put to death on the testimony of only one witness. 31 Moreover, you shall not accept a ransom in exchange for the life of a murderer guilty and sentenced to death; but he shall certainly be put to death. 32 You shall not accept a ransom for him who has escaped to his city of refuge, so that he may return to live in his own land before the death of the high priest. 33 ^aSo you shall not pollute and defile the land in which you live; for the shedding of innocent blood pollutes and defiles the land. No atonement (expiation) can be made for the land for the innocent blood shed in it, except ^bby the blood (execution) of him who shed it. 34 You shall not ^adefile the land in which you live, in the midst of which ^bI live, for I, the LORD, live among the people of Israel.’”
