Había un hombre de Ramataim de Zofim^a, de la región montañosa de Efraín^b, que se llamaba Elcana, hijo de Jeroham^c, hijo de Eliú, hijo de Tohu, hijo de Zuf, efrateo. 2 Y tenía dos mujeres^a: el nombre de una era Ana^b y el¹ de la otra Penina; y Penina tenía hijos, pero Ana no los tenía². 3 Este hombre subía todos los años^a de su ciudad para adorar y ofrecer sacrificio al SEÑOR de los ejércitos^b en Silo^c. Y los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees, eran sacerdotes del SEÑOR allí. 4 Cuando llegaba el día en que Elcana ofrecía sacrificio, daba porciones a Penina su mujer y a todos sus hijos e hijas^a; 5 pero a Ana le daba una doble porción, pues él amaba a Ana, aunque el SEÑOR no le había dado hijos^1a. 6 Y su rival la provocaba amargamente para irritarla, porque el SEÑOR no le había dado hijos^1a. 7 Esto sucedía año tras año; siempre que ella subía a la casa del SEÑOR, la otra¹ la provocaba. Y Ana lloraba y no comía. 8 Entonces Elcana su marido le dijo: Ana, ¿por qué lloras y no comes? ¿Por qué está triste tu corazón? ¿No soy yo para ti mejor que diez hijos^a?

9 Pero Ana se levantó después de haber comido y bebido en Silo, y mientras el sacerdote Elí estaba sentado en la silla junto al poste de la puerta del templo del SEÑOR^a, 10 ella, muy angustiada¹, oraba al SEÑOR y lloraba amargamente. 11 E hizo voto^a y dijo: Oh SEÑOR de los ejércitos, si tú te dignas mirar la aflicción de tu sierva^b, te acuerdas de mí y no te olvidas de tu sierva, sino que das un hijo¹ a tu sierva, yo lo dedicaré al SEÑOR por todos los días de su vida y nunca pasará navaja sobre su cabeza^c.

12 Y¹ mientras ella continuaba en² oración delante del SEÑOR, Elí le estaba observando la boca. 13 Pero Ana hablaba en su corazón^a,solo sus labios se movían y su voz no se oía. Elí, pues, pensó que estaba ebria. 14 Entonces Elí le dijo: ¿Hasta cuándo estarás embriagada^a? Echa de ti tu vino. 15 Pero Ana respondió y dijo: No, señor mío, soy una mujer angustiada¹ en espíritu; no he bebido vino ni licor, sino que he derramado mi alma delante del SEÑOR^a. 16 No tengas¹ a tu sierva por mujer indigna²; porque hasta ahora he orado³ a causa de mi gran congoja y aflicción⁴. 17 Respondió Elí y dijo: Ve en paz^a; y que el Dios de Israel te conceda la petición que le has hecho^1b. 18 Y ella dijo: Halle tu sierva gracia ante tus ojos^a. Y la mujer se puso en camino, comió y ya no estaba triste su semblante^b.

19 Y se levantaron de mañana, adoraron delante del SEÑOR y regresaron¹ de nuevo a su casa en Ramá^a. Y Elcana se llegó a² Ana su mujer, y el SEÑOR se acordó de ella^b. 20 Y¹ a su debido tiempo², después de haber concebido, Ana dio a luz un hijo, y le puso por nombre Samuel³, diciendo: Porque se lo he pedido al SEÑOR^a.

21 Subió el varón Elcana con toda su casa a ofrecer al SEÑOR el sacrificio anual y a pagar su voto^a, 22 pero Ana no subió, pues dijo a su marido: No subiré hasta que el niño sea destetado; entonces lo llevaré para que se presente delante del SEÑOR^a y se quede allí para siempre^b. 23 Y Elcana su marido^a le dijo: Haz lo que mejor te parezca¹. Quédate hasta que lo hayas destetado; solamente confirme el SEÑOR su palabra^b. La mujer se quedó y crió a su hijo hasta que lo destetó. 24 Después de haberlo destetado, lo llevó consigo, con un novillo de tres años¹, un efa² de harina y un odre de vino^a, y lo trajo a la casa del SEÑOR en Silo^b, aunque el niño era pequeño. 25 Entonces sacrificaron el novillo^a, y trajeron el niño a Elí^b. 26 Y ella dijo: ¡Oh señor mío! Vive tu alma^a, señor mío, yo soy la mujer que estuvo aquí junto a ti orando al SEÑOR. 27 Por este niño oraba, y el SEÑOR me ha concedido la petición que le hice^1a. 28 Por lo cual yo también lo he dedicado¹ al SEÑOR; todos los días de su vida estará dedicado^2a al SEÑOR. Y adoró³ allí al SEÑOR^b.

There was a certain man of ^aRamathaim-zophim, of the ^1bhill country of Ephraim, named ^cElkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an ²Ephraimite. 2 He had ^atwo wives, one named ^bHannah and the other named Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.

3 This man went up from his city ^1aeach year ^bto worship and sacrifice to the LORD of hosts at ^cShiloh. Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests to the LORD there. 4 When the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, he ^awould give portions of the sacrificial meat to Peninnah his wife and all her sons and daughters. 5 But to Hannah he would give a double portion, because he loved Hannah, ^abut the LORD had ¹given her no children. 6 Hannah’s rival ^aprovoked her bitterly, to irritate and embarrass her, because the LORD had ¹left her childless. 7 So it happened year after year, whenever she went up to the house of the LORD, Peninnah provoked her; so she wept and would not eat. 8 Then Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you cry and why do you not eat? Why are you so sad and discontent? ^aAm I not better to you than ten sons?”

9 So Hannah got up after eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his seat beside the doorpost of ^athe temple (tabernacle) of the LORD. 10 Hannah was ¹greatly distressed, and she prayed to the LORD and wept in anguish. 11 She ^amade a vow, saying, “O LORD of hosts, if You will indeed ^blook on the affliction (suffering) of Your maidservant and remember, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a son, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life; ^ca ¹razor shall never touch his head.”

12 Now it happened as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli was watching her mouth. 13 Hannah ^awas speaking in her heart (mind) ; only her lips were moving, and her voice was not heard, so Eli ¹thought she was drunk. 14 Eli said to her, “^aHow long will you make yourself drunk? Get rid of your wine.” 15 But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman with a despairing spirit. I have not been drinking wine or any intoxicating drink, but I ^ahave poured out my soul before the LORD. Gen 19:34 16 Do not regard your maidservant as a wicked and worthless woman, for I have spoken until now out of my great concern and bitter provocation.” 17 Then Eli answered and said, “^aGo in peace; and may the God of Israel ^bgrant your petition that you have asked of Him.” 18 Hannah said, “^aLet your maidservant find grace and favor in your sight.” So the woman went on her way and ate, and ^bher face was no longer sad.

19 The family got up early the next morning, worshiped before the LORD, and returned to their home in ^aRamah. Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and ^bthe LORD remembered her prayer. 20 It came about in due time, after Hannah had conceived, that she gave birth to a son; she named him ¹Samuel, saying, “Because ^aI have asked for him from the LORD.”

21 Then the man Elkanah and all his household ^awent up to offer to the LORD the ¹yearly sacrifice and pay his vow. 22 But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “I will not go up until the child is ¹weaned; and then I will ^abring him, so that he may appear before the LORD and ^bremain there as long as he lives.” 23 ^aElkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems best to you. Wait until you have weaned him; only ^bmay the LORD establish and confirm His word.” So the woman remained behind and nursed her son until she weaned him. 24 Now when she had weaned him, ^ashe took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a ¹leather bottle of wine to pour over the burnt offering for a sweet fragrance, and she brought Samuel to ^bthe LORD’S house in Shiloh, although the child was young. 25 Then ^athey slaughtered the bull, and ^bbrought the child to Eli. 26 Hannah said, “Oh, my lord! ^aAs surely as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood beside you here, praying to the LORD. 27 ^aFor this child I prayed, and the LORD has granted me my request which I asked of Him. 28 ^aTherefore I have also dedicated him to the LORD; as long as he lives he is dedicated to the LORD.” And ^bthey worshiped the LORD there.
