Entonces toda la asamblea de ellos se levantó, y llevaron a Jesús¹ ante Pilato^a. 2 ^aY comenzaron a acusarle, diciendo: Hemos hallado queeste pervierte a nuestra nación^b, prohibiendo pagar¹ impuesto al César^c, y diciendo que Él mismo es Cristo², un Rey. 3 Pilato entonces le preguntó, diciendo: ¿Eres tú el Rey de los judíos? Y Jesús respondiéndole, dijo: Tú lo dices^a. 4 Y Pilato dijo a los principales sacerdotes y a la multitud: No encuentro delito en este hombre^a. 5 Pero ellos insistían, diciendo: Él alborota al pueblo, enseñando por toda Judea, comenzando desde Galilea^a hasta aquí. 6 Cuando Pilato oyó esto, preguntó si el hombre era galileo. 7 Y al saber que Jesús pertenecía a la jurisdicción de Herodes, le remitió a Herodes^a, que también estaba en Jerusalén en aquellos¹ días.

8 Herodes, al ver a Jesús se alegró en gran manera, pues hacía mucho tiempo que quería verle^a por lo que había oído hablar de Él, y esperaba ver alguna señal¹ que Él hiciera. 9 Y le interrogó extensamente¹, pero Jesús² nada le respondió^a. 10 Los principales sacerdotes y los escribas también estaban allí, acusándole con vehemencia. 11 Entonces Herodes, con sus soldados, después de tratarle con desprecio y burlarse de Él, le vistió con un espléndido manto^a y le envió de nuevo a Pilato. 12 Aquel mismo día Herodes y Pilato^a se hicieron amigos, pues antes habían estado enemistados el uno con el otro.

13 Entonces Pilato convocó a los principales sacerdotes, a los gobernantes^a y al pueblo, 14 y les dijo: Me habéis presentado a este hombre como uno que incita al pueblo a la rebelión^a, pero¹ habiéndole interrogado yo delante de vosotros, no he hallado ningún delito en este hombre^b de las acusaciones que hacéis contra Él. 15 Ni tampoco Herodes^a, pues nos lo ha remitido de nuevo; y he aquí que nada ha hecho¹ que merezca la muerte. 16 Por consiguiente, después de castigarle, le soltaré^a. 17 ¹Y tenía obligación de soltarles un preso en cada fiesta. 18 Pero todos ellos gritaron a una, diciendo: ^a¡Fuera coneste, y suéltanos a Barrabás! 19 (Este¹ había sido echado en la cárcel por un levantamiento ocurrido en la ciudad, y por homicidio.) 20 Pilato, queriendo soltar a Jesús, les volvió a hablar, 21 pero ellos continuaban gritando, diciendo: ¡Crucifícale! ¡Crucifícale! 22 Y él les dijo por tercera vez: ¿Por qué? ¿Qué mal ha hechoeste? No he hallado en Él ningún delito digno de muerte; por tanto, le castigaré y le soltaré^a. 23 Pero ellos insistían, pidiendo a grandes voces que fuera crucificado. Y sus voces comenzaron a predominar. 24 Entonces Pilato decidió¹ que se les concediera su demanda. 25 Y soltó al que ellos pedían, al que había sido echado en la cárcel por sedición y homicidio, pero a Jesús lo entregó a la voluntad de ellos.

26 ^aCuando le llevaban, tomaron a un cierto Simón de Cirene que venía del campo y le pusieron la cruz encima para que la llevara detrás de Jesús^b.

27 Y le seguía una gran multitud del pueblo y de mujeres que lloraban¹ y se lamentaban^a por Él. 28 Pero Jesús, volviéndose a ellas, dijo: Hijas de Jerusalén, no lloréis por mí; llorad más bien por vosotras mismas y por vuestros hijos. 29 Porque he aquí, vienen días en que dirán: «Dichosas¹ las estériles, y los vientres que nunca concibieron, y los senos que nunca criaron^a». 30 Entonces comenzarán A DECIR A LOS MONTES: «CAED SOBRE NOSOTROS»; Y A LOS COLLADOS: «CUBRIDNOS^a». 31 Porque si en el árbol verde hacen esto, ¿qué sucederá en el seco?

32 Y llevaban también a otros dos, que eran malhechores, para ser muertos con Él^a.

33 ^aCuando llegaron al lugar llamado «La Calavera¹», crucificaron allí a Jesús² y a los malhechores, uno a la derecha y otro a la izquierda. 34 Y Jesús decía: Padre^a, perdónalos, porque no saben lo que hacen¹. Y echaron suertes, repartiéndose entre sí sus vestidos^b. 35 Y el pueblo estaba allí mirando; y aun los gobernantes^a se mofaban de Él, diciendo: A otros salvó; que se salve a sí mismo^b si este es el Cristo¹ de Dios, su Escogido. 36 Los soldados también se burlaban de Él, acercándose y ofreciéndole vinagre^a, 37 y diciendo: Si tú eres el Rey de los judíos, sálvate a ti mismo^a. 38 Había también una inscripción sobre Él¹, que decía: ESTE ES EL REY DE LOS JUDÍOS^a.

39 Y uno de los malhechores que estaban colgados allí le lanzaba insultos^1a, diciendo: ¿No eres tú el Cristo²? ¡Sálvate a ti mismo^b y a nosotros! 40 Pero el otro le contestó, y reprendiéndole, dijo: ¿Ni siquiera temes tú a Dios a pesar de que estás bajo la misma condena? 41 Y nosotros a la verdad, justamente, porque recibimos lo que merecemos por nuestros hechos¹; peroeste nada malo ha hecho. 42 Y decía: Jesús, acuérdate de mí cuando vengas en¹ tu reino. 43 Entonces Él le dijo: En verdad te digo: hoy estarás conmigo en el paraíso^a.

44 ^aEra ya como la hora sexta¹, cuando descendieron² tinieblas sobre toda la tierra hasta la hora novena^3b 45 al eclipsarse el sol. El velo del templo se rasgó en dos^1a. 46 Y Jesús, clamando a gran voz, dijo: Padre, EN TUS MANOS ENCOMIENDO MI ESPÍRITU^a. Y habiendo dicho esto, expiró^b. 47 Cuando el centurión vio lo que había sucedido^a, glorificaba a Dios^b, diciendo: Ciertamente, este hombre era inocente¹. 48 Y cuando todas las multitudes que se habían reunido para presenciar este espectáculo, al observar lo que había acontecido, se volvieron golpeándose el pecho^a. 49 Pero todos sus conocidos y las mujeres que le habían acompañado desde Galilea, estaban a cierta distancia viendo estas cosas^a.

50 ^aY había¹ un hombre llamado José, miembro del concilio^b, varón bueno y justo 51 (el cual no había asentido al plan y al proceder de los demás¹) que era de Arimatea, ciudad de los judíos, y que esperaba el reino de Dios^a. 52 Este fue a Pilato y le pidió el cuerpo de Jesús, 53 y bajándole, le envolvió en un lienzo de lino, y le puso en un sepulcro excavado en la roca donde nadie había sido puesto todavía. 54 Era el día de la preparación^a, y estaba para comenzar¹ el día de reposo. 55 Y las mujeres que habían venido con Él desde Galilea^a siguieron detrás, y vieron el sepulcro y cómo fue colocado el¹ cuerpo. 56 Y cuando regresaron, prepararon especias aromáticas y perfumes^a.

Y en el día de reposo descansaron según el mandamiento^b.

Then the whole assembly got up and ^abrought Him before Pilate. 2 ^aThey began to accuse Jesus, asserting, “We found this Man ^bmisleading and perverting our nation and ^cforbidding us to pay taxes to Caesar, and claiming that He Himself is Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed) , a King.” Matt 27:11-14; Mark 15:2-5; John 18:29-37 3 So Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And He answered him, “^aIt is just as you say.” 4 Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “^aI find no guilt in this Man.” 5 But they were insistent and said, “He stirs up the people to rebel, teaching throughout Judea, ^astarting from Galilee even as far as here in Jerusalem.”

6 When Pilate heard it, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. 7 And when he learned that He belonged to the jurisdiction of ¹Herod Antipas, the tetrarch of Galilee, he sent Him to ^aHerod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.

8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly pleased. ^aHe had wanted to see Him for a long time because of what he had heard about Him, and was hoping to see some miraculous sign even something spectacular done by Him. 9 And he questioned Him at some length, but ^aJesus made no reply. Is 53:7 10 The chief priests and the scribes were standing there, continually accusing Him heatedly. 11 And Herod with his soldiers, after treating Him with contempt and mocking and ridiculing Him, dressed Him in ^aa gorgeous robe and sent Him back to Pilate. Is 53:8 12 Now that very day ^aHerod and Pilate became friends with each other—before this they had been enemies.

13 Pilate summoned the chief priests and the ^arulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought this man before me as ^aone who corrupts and incites the people to rebellion. After examining Him before you, I ^bhave found no guilt in this Man regarding the charges which you make against Him. 15 No, nor has ^aHerod, for he sent Him back to us; and indeed, He has done nothing to deserve death. 16 Therefore I will ^apunish Him to teach Him a lesson and release Him.” 17 [¹Now he was obligated to release to them one prisoner at the Feast.]

18 But they loudly shouted out all together, saying, “^aAway with this Man, and release Barabbas to us!” Matt 27:15-26; Mark 15:6-15; John 18:39-19:16 19 (He was one who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection that happened in the city, and for murder.) 20 Pilate addressed them again, wanting to release Jesus, 21 but they kept shouting out, “Crucify, crucify Him!” 22 A third time he said to them, “Why, what wrong has He done? I have found no guilt no crime, no offense in Him demanding death; therefore I will ^apunish Him to teach Him a lesson and release Him.” 23 But they were insistent and unrelenting, demanding with loud voices that Jesus be crucified. And their voices began to prevail and accomplish their purpose. 24 Pilate pronounced sentence that their demand be granted. 25 And he released the man they were asking for who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, but he handed over Jesus to their will.

26 ^aWhen they led Him away, they seized a man, ¹Simon of ^2bCyrene, who was coming in to the city from the country, and ³placed on him the cross to carry behind Jesus. Matt 27:32; Mark 15:21

27 Following Him was a large crowd of the people, including women who were ^amourning and wailing for Him. 28 But Jesus, turning toward them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘^aBlessed are the barren, and the wombs that have not given birth, and the breasts that have never nursed.’ 30 Then they will begin TO ^aSAY TO THE MOUNTAINS, ‘FALL ON US!’ AND TO THE HILLS, ‘COVER US!’ Is 2:19, 20; Hos 10:8; Rev 6:16 31 ¹For if they do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

32 ^aTwo others also, who were criminals, were being led away to be executed with Him. Is 53:12

33 ^aWhen they came to the place called ¹The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and one on the left. Matt 27:33-44; Mark 15:22-32; John 19:17-24 34 ¹And Jesus was saying, “^aFather, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” ^bAnd they cast lots, dividing His clothes among themselves. Ps 22:18 35 Now the people stood by, watching; but even the ^arulers ridiculed and sneered at Him, saying, “He saved others from death; ^blet Him save Himself if He is the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed) of God, His Chosen One.” 36 The soldiers also mocked Him, coming up to Him and cruelly ^aoffering Him sour wine, Ps 69:21; Matt 27:48; Mark 15:36f; John 19:29, 30 37 and sarcastically saying, “^aIf you are really the King of the Jews, save Yourself from death!” 38 Now there was also an inscription above Him: “^aTHIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

39 ^aOne of the criminals who had been hanged on a cross beside Him kept hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? ^bSave Yourself and us from death!” 40 But the other one rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 We are suffering justly, because we are getting what we deserve for what we have done; but this Man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he was saying, “Jesus, please remember me when You come into Your kingdom!” 43 Jesus said to him, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, today you will be with Me in ^1aParadise.” 2+@Cor 12:4; Rev 2:7

44 ^aIt was now about ^bthe sixth hour (noon) , and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour (3:00 p.m.) , Matt 27:45-56; Mark 15:33-41; John 19:14 45 because the sun was ¹obscured; and ^athe veil of the Holy of Holies of the temple was ²torn in two from top to bottom. Ex 26:31-35 46 And Jesus, ^acrying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, ^bINTO YOUR HANDS I COMMIT MY SPIRIT!” Having said this, He breathed His last. Ps 31:5 47 ^aNow when the centurion saw what had taken place, he began ^bpraising and honoring God, saying, “Certainly this Man was innocent.” 48 All the crowds who had gathered for this spectacle, when they saw what had happened, began to return to their homes, ^abeating their breasts as a sign of mourning or repentance. 49 ^aAnd all His acquaintances and ^bthe women who had accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, watching these things.

50 ^aA man named Joseph, who was a ^bmember of the Council (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court) , a good and honorable man Matt 27:57-61; Mark 15:42-47; John 19:38-42 51 (he had not consented to the Council’s plan and action) a man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was ^awaiting for and expecting the kingdom of God; 52 this man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 And after receiving permission he took it down and wrapped it in a linen burial cloth and laid Him in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had yet been laid. 54 It was ^athe day of preparation for the Sabbath, and the Sabbath was dawning. 55 ^aNow the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed closely, and saw the tomb and how His body was laid. 56 Then they went back and ^aprepared spices and ointments and sweet-smelling herbs.

And ^bon the Sabbath they rested in accordance with the commandment forbidding work. Ex 12:16; 20:10

Then the entire assembly of them set out and ^abrought Him before Pilate. 2 ^aAnd they began to bring charges against Him, saying, “We found this Man ^bmisleading our nation and ^cforbidding us to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is ¹Christ, a King.” 3 Now Pilate asked Him, saying, “So You are the King of the Jews?” And He answered him and said, “^aIt is as you say.” 4 But Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “^aI find no grounds for charges in the case of this Man.” 5 But they kept on insisting, saying, “He is stirring up the people, teaching all over Judea, ^astarting from Galilee, as far as this place!”

6 Now when Pilate heard this, he asked whether the Man was a Galilean. 7 And when he learned that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to ^aHerod, ¹since he also was in Jerusalem ²at this time.

8 Now Herod was overjoyed when he saw Jesus; for ^ahe had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had been hearing about Him and was hoping to see some ¹sign performed by Him. 9 And he questioned Him ¹at some length; but ^aHe offered him no answer at all. 10 Now the chief priests and the scribes stood there, vehemently charging Him. 11 And Herod, together with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, ^adressing Him in a brightly shining robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. 12 And so ^aHerod and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for previously, they had been enemies toward each other.

13 Now Pilate summoned to himself the chief priests, the ^1arulers, and the people, 14 and he said to them, “You brought this Man to me on the ground that ^aHe is inciting the people to revolt; and behold, after examining Him before you, I ^bhave found no basis at all in the case of this Man for the charges which you are bringing against Him. 15 No, nor has ^aHerod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him. 16 Therefore I will ^1apunish Him and release Him.” 17 ¹[Now he was obligated to release to them at the feast one prisoner.]

18 But they cried out all together, saying, “^aAway with this Man, and release to us Barabbas!” 19 (He was one who had been thrown into prison for a revolt that took place in the city, and for murder.) 20 But Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again, 21 but they kept on crying out, saying, “Crucify, crucify Him!” 22 And he said to them a third time, “Why, what has this Man done wrong? I have found ¹in His case no grounds for a sentence of death; therefore I will ^2apunish Him and release Him.” 23 But they were insistent, with loud voices, demanding that He be crucified. And their voices began to prevail. 24 And so Pilate decided to have their demand carried out. 25 And he released the man for whom they were asking, who had been thrown into prison for a revolt and murder; but he handed Jesus over to their will.

39 ^aOne of the criminals who were hanged there was ¹hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the ²Christ? ^bSave Yourself and us!” 40 But the other responded, and rebuking him, said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving ¹what we deserve for our crimes; but this Man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!” 43 And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you will be with Me in ^aParadise.”

44 ^aIt was now about ^1bthe sixth hour, and darkness came over the entire land until ²the ninth hour, 45 ¹because the sun stopped shining; and ^athe veil of the temple was torn ²in two. 46 And Jesus, ^acrying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, ^bINTO YOUR HANDS I ENTRUST MY SPIRIT.” And having said this, He ¹died. 47 ^aNow when the centurion saw what had happened, he began ^bpraising God, saying, “This Man was in fact ¹innocent.” 48 And all the crowds who came together for this spectacle, after watching what had happened, began to return home, ^1abeating their chests. 49 ^aAnd all His acquaintances and ^bthe women who accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, seeing these things.

And ^bon the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
