Y Ben-adad, rey de Aram^a, reunió todo su ejército, y tenía con él treinta y dos reyes con caballos y carros^b; y subió, sitió a Samaria^c y peleó contra ella. 2 Entonces envió mensajeros a la ciudad, a Acab, rey de Israel, diciéndole: Así dice Ben-adad: 3 «Tu plata y tu oro son míos; míos son también tus mujeres y tus hijos más hermosos». 4 Y el rey de Israel respondió, y dijo: Sea conforme a tu palabra, oh rey, señor mío; tuyo soy yo y todo lo que tengo. 5 Después volvieron los mensajeros y dijeron: Así dice Ben-adad¹: «Por cierto que envié a decirte: “Me darás tu plata, tu oro, tus mujeres y tus hijos”. 6 Pero¹ mañana como a esta hora te enviaré mis siervos, y registrarán tu casa y las casas de tus siervos; y sucederá que todo lo que sea agradable a² tus ojos lo tomarán³ en su mano y se lo llevarán».

7 El rey de Israel llamó a todos los ancianos del país, y les dijo: Reconoced ahora y ved queestesolo busca hacer daño^a; pues él envió a pedirme mis mujeres, mis hijos, mi plata y mi oro, y no se los negué. 8 Y todos los ancianos y todo el pueblo le dijeron: No escuches ni consientas. 9 Entonces él respondió a los mensajeros de Ben-adad: Decid a mi señor el rey: «Haré todo lo que mandaste a tu siervo la primera vez, pero esto otro no lo puedo hacer». Se fueron los mensajeros y le llevaron la respuesta¹. 10 Y Ben-adad envió a decirle: Así me hagan los dioses y aun me añadan^a, si el polvo de Samaria bastará para llenar las manos¹ de todo el pueblo que me sigue². 11 Respondió el rey de Israel y dijo: Decidle: «No se jacte^a el que se ciñe las armas como el que se las desciñe». 12 Y¹ cuando Ben-adad oyó esta palabra, estaba bebiendo^a con² los reyes en las tiendas³, y dijo a sus siervos: Tomad posiciones. Y tomaron posiciones contra la ciudad.

13 Y he aquí, un profeta se acercó a Acab, rey de Israel, y le dijo: Así dice el SEÑOR: «¿Has visto toda esta gran multitud? He aquí, la entregaré hoy en tu mano, y sabrás que yo soy el SEÑOR^a». 14 Y Acab dijo: ¿Por medio de quién? Y él dijo: Así dice el SEÑOR: «Por medio de los jóvenes de los jefes de las provincias». Entonces dijo: ¿Quién comenzará¹ la batalla? Y él respondió: Tú. 15 Entonces pasó revista a los jóvenes de los jefes de las provincias y eran doscientos treinta y dos; después de ellos, pasó revista a todo el pueblo, es decir, todos los hijos de Israel, siete mil.

16 Salieron al mediodía, mientras Ben-adad estaba bebiendo hasta emborracharse en las tiendas^1a junto con² los treinta y dos reyes que lo ayudaban. 17 Los jóvenes de los jefes de las provincias salieron primero; y envió Ben-adad mensajeros que le avisaron, diciendo: Han salido hombres de Samaria. 18 Entonces dijo: Si en paz han salido, prendedlos vivos; o si en guerra han salido, prendedlos vivos^a. 19 Salieron, pues,aquellos de la ciudad, los jóvenes de los jefes de las provincias y el ejército que los seguía. 20 Y mató¹ cada uno a su hombre; los arameos huyeron e Israel los persiguió, y Ben-adad, rey de Aram, escapó a caballo con algunos jinetes. 21 Y el rey de Israel salió y atacó¹ los caballos y los carros, y derrotó² a los arameos causándoles gran matanza.

22 Entonces el profeta se acercó al rey de Israel^a, y le dijo: Ve, fortalécete, y entiende y mira lo que tienes que hacer; porque a la vuelta del año^b el rey de Aram subirá contra ti. 23 Y los siervos del rey de Aram le dijeron: Sus dioses son dioses de los montes^a, por eso fueron más fuertes que nosotros; mejor peleemos contra ellos en la llanura, pues ¿no seremos más fuertes que ellos? 24 Haz, pues, esto: quita a los reyes, cada uno de su puesto, y pon capitanes en su lugar, 25 y alista¹ un ejército como el ejército que perdiste, caballo por caballo y carro por carro. Entonces pelearemos contra ellos en la llanura, pues ¿no seremos más fuertes que ellos? Él escuchó su consejo² y lo hizo así.

26 Y sucedió que a la vuelta del año^a, Ben-adad alistó a los arameos y subió a Afec^b para pelear contra Israel. 27 Y los hijos de Israel fueron alistados y provistos de raciones, y fueron a su encuentro; los hijos de Israel acamparon delante de ellos como dos rebañuelos de cabras pero los arameos llenaban la tierra^a. 28 Entonces un hombre de Dios^a se acercó y habló al rey de Israel, y dijo: Así dice el SEÑOR: «Porque los arameos han dicho: “El SEÑOR es un dios de los montes^b, pero no es un dios de los valles; por tanto, entregaré a toda esta gran multitud en tu mano, y sabrás que yo soy el SEÑOR^c”». 29 Acamparon unos frente a otros por siete días. Y sucedió que al séptimo día comenzó la batalla, y los hijos de Israel mataron¹ de los arameos a cien mil hombres de a pie en un solo día. 30 Los demás huyeron a Afec^a, a la ciudad, y el muro cayó sobre los veintisiete mil hombres que quedaban. También Ben-adad huyó y se refugió¹ en la ciudad en un aposento interior^2b.

31 Y sus siervos le dijeron^a: He aquí, hemos oído que los reyes de la casa de Israel son reyes misericordiosos; te rogamos que nos dejes poner cilicio en nuestros lomos^b y cuerdas sobre nuestras cabezas, y salgamos al rey de Israel; quizás él salve tu vida¹. 32 Se ciñeron cilicio en sus lomos, pusieron cuerdas sobre sus cabezas y vinieron al rey de Israel^a, y dijeron: Tu siervo Ben-adad^b dice: «Te ruego que me perdones la vida¹». Y él dijo: ¿Vive todavía? Es mi hermano. 33 Y los hombres tomaron esto como señal¹, y tomando de él la palabra prestamente dijeron: Tu hermano Ben-adad vive. Y él dijo: Id, traedlo. Entonces Ben-adad salió a él, y él le hizo subir en el carro. 34 Y Ben-adad^a le dijo: Devolveré las ciudades que mi padre tomó de tu padre, y te harás calles en Damasco, como mi padre hizo en Samaria. Y yo, dijo Acab, con este pacto te dejaré ir. Hizo, pues, pacto con él y lo dejó ir.

35 Y cierto hombre de los hijos de los profetas^a dijo a otro¹ por palabra del SEÑOR^b: Te ruego que me hieras. Pero el hombre se negó a herirlo. 36 Entonces le dijo: Porque no has atendido a la voz del SEÑOR, he aquí, tan pronto como te apartes de mí, un león te matará^1a. Y tan pronto se apartó de él, un león lo encontró y lo mató². 37 Entonces halló a otro hombre y le dijo: Te ruego que me hieras. Y el hombre le dio un golpe, hiriéndolo¹. 38 Y el profeta se fue y esperó al rey en el camino; se había disfrazado^a con una venda sobre los ojos. 39 Cuando el rey pasaba, clamó al rey y dijo: Tu siervo fue al centro de la batalla; y he aquí, un hombre se apartó de las filas y me trajo a uno, y me dijo: «Guarda a este hombre; si por alguna razón llega a faltar, entonces tu vida¹ responderá por su vida^2a o pagarás un talento³ de plata». 40 Y mientras tu siervo estaba ocupado aquí y allá, él desapareció. Y el rey de Israel le dijo: Así será tu sentencia; tú mismo lo has decidido. 41 Entonces él se apresuró a quitarse la venda de los ojos, y el rey de Israel lo reconoció como¹ uno de los profetas. 42 Y él le dijo: Así dice el SEÑOR: «Porque has dejado salir de tu mano al hombre a quien yo había destinado a la destrucción, he aquí, tu vida responderá por su vida^a y tu pueblo por su pueblo». 43 El rey de Israel se fue a su casa disgustado y molesto^a, y entró en Samaria.

^aBen-hadad king of Aram (Syria) gathered all his army together; ^bthirty-two kings were allied with him, with horses and chariots. And he went up and ^cbesieged Samaria Israel’s capital, and fought against it. 2 Then he sent messengers to the city to Ahab king of Israel; and he said to him, “Thus says Ben-hadad: 3 ‘Your silver and your gold are mine; your wives and your children, even the fairest, also are mine as conditions of peace.’” 4 The king of Israel conceded his defeat and answered, “By your word, my lord, O king, I am yours, and all that I have.” 5 The messengers returned and said, “Thus says Ben-hadad: ‘I indeed sent word to you, saying, “You shall give me your silver, your gold, your wives, and your children,” 6 but about this time tomorrow I will send my servants to you, and they will search your house and the houses of your servants; and they will take with their hands (confiscate) whatever is desirable in your eyes and carry it away.’”

7 Then the king of Israel summoned all the elders of the land and said, “Please observe and ^asee how this man is seeking our destruction. For he sent messengers to me for my wives, my children, my silver, and my gold, and I did not refuse him.” 8 All the elders and all the people said to him, “Do not listen or consent to this additional demand.” 9 So he said to Ben-hadad’s messengers, “Tell my lord the king, ‘Every demand you first sent to your servant I will do, but I cannot do this additional thing as a condition of peace.’” And the messengers left; then they brought him word again. 10 Ben-hadad sent word to him and said, “May ^athe gods do so to me, and more also, if there is enough dust left of Samaria for handfuls for all the armed people who follow me.” 11 The king of Israel answered, “Tell him, ‘^aA man who puts on his armor to go to battle should not boast like the man who takes it off after the battle has been won.’” 12 When Ben-hadad heard this message, as ^ahe and the kings were drinking in the temporary shelters, he said to his servants, “Station yourselves.” So they stationed themselves against the city of Samaria.

13 Then a prophet approached Ahab king of Israel and said, “Thus says the LORD: ‘Have you seen all this great army? Behold, ^aI will hand them over to you, and ^byou shall know without any doubt that I am the LORD.’” 14 Ahab said, “By whom?” And he said, “Thus says the LORD: ‘By the young men the attendants or bodyguards of the governors of the districts.’” Then Ahab said, “Who shall begin the battle?” And he answered, “You.” 15 Then Ahab assembled and counted the young men of the governors of the districts, and there were 232. After them he assembled and counted all the people, all the sons of Israel, 7,000. 1+@Kin 19:18

16 They went out at noon, while ^aBen-hadad was getting drunk in the temporary shelters, he and the thirty-two kings who were helping him. 17 The young men of the governors of the districts went out first; and Ben-hadad sent men out and they told him, saying, “Men have come out of Samaria.” 18 ^aAnd he said, “Whether they have come out for peace or for war, take them alive.”

19 So these young men of the governors of the districts went out of the city, and the army followed them. 20 And each one killed his man; and the Arameans (Syrians) fled and Israel pursued them. Ben-hadad king of Aram escaped on a horse with horsemen. 21 The king of Israel went out and struck the riders of the horses and chariots, and killed the Arameans in a great slaughter.

22 ^aThen the prophet approached the king of Israel and said to him, “Go, strengthen yourself and observe and see what you have to do; for ^bat the first of next year the king of Aram (Syria) will come up against you.”

23 Now the servants of the king of Aram said to him, “^aIsrael’s ¹god is a ²god of the hills; that is why they were stronger than we. But let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we will be stronger than they. 24 Do this: remove the thirty-two allied kings, each from his place, and put captains in their place, 25 and assemble an army like the army that you have lost in battle, horse for horse and chariot for chariot. Then we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.” And he listened to their words and did so.

26 ^aAt the first of the year in spring, Ben-hadad assembled and counted the Arameans (Syrians) and went up to ^bAphek east of the Sea of Galilee to fight against Israel. 27 The sons of Israel were counted and given provisions, and they went to meet them. The Israelites camped before the enemy like two ¹little flocks of goats with everything against them, except God, ^aand the Arameans filled the country. 28 ^aA man of God approached and said to the king of Israel, “Thus says the LORD, ‘Because the Arameans have said, “^bThe LORD is a god of the hills, but He is not a god of the valleys,” ^cI will give this great army into your hand, and you shall know by experience that I am the LORD.’” Phil 4:13 29 So they camped opposite each other for seven days. Then on the seventh day the battle began, and the sons of Israel killed 100,000 of the Aramean foot soldiers in a single day. 30 But the rest ran to the city of ^aAphek, and the city wall fell on 27,000 of the men who were left. Ben-hadad escaped and came into the city, going into an ^binner chamber to hide.

31 ^aBut his servants said to him, “We have heard that the kings of the house (royal line) of Israel are merciful kings. Please let us ^bput sackcloth around our ¹loins and ropes on our necks as symbols of submission, and go out to the king of Israel; perhaps he will spare your life.” 32 So ^athey put sackcloth around their loins and ropes on their necks, and came to the king of Israel and said, “^bYour servant Ben-hadad says, ‘Please let me live.’” And Ahab asked, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.” 33 Now the men took it as a good omen, and quickly understanding his meaning said, “Yes, your brother Ben-hadad lives.” Then the king said, “Go, bring him.” Then Ben-hadad came out to him, and Ahab had him come up into the chariot. 34 Ben-hadad tempting him said to him, “^aI will restore the cities which my father took from your father; and you may set up bazaars (shops) of your own in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria.” Then, Ahab replied, “I will let you go with this covenant (treaty) .” So he made a covenant with him and let him go.

35 Now a certain man of ^1athe sons of the prophets said to another ^bby the word of the LORD, “Please strike me.” But the man refused to strike him. 36 Then the prophet said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, behold, as soon as you leave me, ^aa lion will kill you.” And as soon as he left him, a lion found him and killed him. 37 Then the prophet found another man and said, “Please strike me.” So the man struck him hard, wounding him. 38 So the prophet left and waited for King Ahab by the road, and ^adisguised himself as a wounded soldier with a bandage over his eyes. 39 As the king passed by, the prophet called out to the king and said, “Your servant went out into the middle of the battle, and behold, a man turned aside and brought a man to me and said, ‘Guard this man; if for any reason he is missing, ^athen your life shall be required for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.’ 40 But while your servant was busy here and there, he escaped and was gone.” And the king of Israel said to him, “Such is your own judgment (verdict) ; you have determined it.” 41 Then the prophet quickly removed the bandage from his eyes, and Ahab the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets. 42 He said to the king, “Thus says the LORD: ‘Because you have released from your hand the man Ben-hadad whom I had devoted to destruction, ^ayour life shall be required for his life, and your people for his people.’” 43 So ^athe king of Israel went to his house resentful and sullen, and came to Samaria. 1+@Kin 22:34-36

Now ^aBen-hadad, king of Aram, gathered all his army, ^band there were thirty-two kings with him, and horses and chariots. And he went up and ^cbesieged Samaria, and fought against it. 2 Then he sent messengers to the city to Ahab, king of Israel, and said to him, “This is what Ben-hadad says: 3 ‘Your silver and your gold are mine; your most beautiful wives and children are also mine.’” 4 And the king of Israel replied, “As ¹you say, my lord, O king; I am yours, as well as all that I have.” 5 Then the messengers returned and said, “Ben-hadad says ¹this: ‘I did indeed send word to you, saying, “You shall give me your silver, your gold, your wives, and your children”; 6 but about this time tomorrow I will send my servants to you, and they will search your house and the houses of your servants; and they will take in their hands everything that is pleasing to your eyes, and take it all away.’”

7 Then the king of Israel summoned all the elders of the land and said, “Please be aware and ^asee that this man is looking for trouble; for he sent me his demand for my wives, my children, my silver, and my gold, and I did not refuse him.” 8 Then all the elders and all the people said to him, “Do not listen nor consent.” 9 So he said to the messengers of Ben-hadad, “Tell my lord the king, ‘Everything that you sent as a demand to your servant at the first, I will do; but this thing I cannot do.’” Then the messengers departed, and brought him word again. 10 Ben-hadad sent word to him and said, “May ^athe gods do so to me and more so, ¹if the dust of Samaria will be enough for handfuls for all the people who ²follow me.” 11 Then the king of Israel replied, “Tell him, ‘^aHe who straps on his weapons had better not boast like one who takes them off.’” 12 And when Ben-hadad heard this message, while ^ahe was drinking ¹with the kings in the ²temporary shelters, he said to his servants, “Take your positions.” So they took their positions against the city.

13 Now behold, a prophet approached Ahab king of Israel, and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, ^aI am going to hand them over to you today, and ^byou shall know that I am the LORD.’” 14 But Ahab said, “By whom?” So he said, “The LORD says this: ‘By the young men of the leaders of the provinces.’” Then he said, “Who will begin the battle?” And he said, “You will.” 15 So he mustered the young men of the leaders of the provinces, and there were 232; and after them he mustered all the people, all the sons of Israel: seven thousand.

16 They went out at noon, while ^aBen-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the ¹temporary shelters ²with the thirty-two kings who were helping him. 17 The young men of the leaders of the provinces went out first; and Ben-hadad sent out scouts, and they reported to him, saying, “Men have come out from Samaria.” 18 ^aThen he said, “If they have come out ¹for peace, take them alive; or if they have come out for war, take them alive as well.”

19 So these men went out from the city, the young men of the leaders of the provinces, and the army which followed them. 20 And they ¹killed, each one, his man; and the Arameans fled and Israel pursued them, and Ben-hadad the king of Aram escaped on a horse with horsemen. 21 The king of Israel also went out and struck the horses and chariots, and ¹killed the Arameans in a great slaughter.

22 Then ^athe prophet approached the king of Israel and said to him, “Go, show yourself courageous and be aware and see what you have to do; for ^bat ¹the turn of the year the king of Aram will march against you.”

23 Now the servants of the king of Aram said to him, “^aTheir gods are gods of the mountains; for that reason they were stronger than we. But let us fight them in the plain, and we will certainly be stronger than they. 24 Carry out this ¹plan: remove the kings, each from his place, and put governors in their place, 25 and ¹muster an army like the army that you have lost, horse for horse and chariot for chariot. Then we will fight against them in the plain, and we will certainly be stronger than they.” And he listened to their voice and did so.

26 So ^aat ¹the turn of the year Ben-hadad mustered the Arameans and went up to ^bAphek to fight against Israel. 27 And the sons of Israel were mustered and given provisions, and they went to meet them; and the sons of Israel camped opposite them like two little flocks of goats, ^awhile the Arameans filled the country. 28 Then ^aa man of God approached and spoke to the king of Israel, and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Since the Arameans have said, “^bThe LORD is a god of mountains, but He is not a god of valleys,” therefore ^cI will hand over to you all this great multitude, and you shall know that I am the LORD.’” 29 So they camped, one opposite the other, for seven days. And on the seventh day the battle was joined, and the sons of Israel ¹killed of the Arameans a hundred thousand foot soldiers in a single day. 30 But the rest fled to ^aAphek into the city, and the wall fell on twenty-seven thousand men who were left. And Ben-hadad fled and came into the city, going from one ^binner room to another.

31 But ^ahis servants said to him, “Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Please let’s ^bput sackcloth ¹around our waists and ropes on our heads, and go out to the king of Israel; perhaps he will let ²you live.” 32 So ^athey put sackcloth ¹around their waists and ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel and said, “^bYour servant Ben-hadad says, ‘Please let ²me live.’” And Ahab said, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.” 33 Now the men took this as a good omen, and quickly ¹accepting it from him, they said, “Your brother Ben-hadad.” Then he said, “Go, bring him.” Then Ben-hadad came out to him, and he had him mount the chariot. 34 And Ben-hadad said to him, “^aThe cities which my father took from your father I will restore, and you can make streets for yourself in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria.” Ahab said, “And I will let you go with this covenant.” So he made a covenant with him and let him go.

35 Now a man from ^athe sons of the prophets said to ¹another ^bby the word of the LORD, “Please strike me.” But the man refused to strike him. 36 Then he said to him, “Because you have not listened to the voice of the LORD, behold, as soon as you leave me, ^aa lion will ¹kill you.” And as soon as he left him a lion found him and ²killed him. 37 Then he found another man and said, “Please strike me.” And the man struck him, ¹injuring him. 38 So the prophet departed and waited for the king by the road, and ^adisguised himself with a bandage over his eyes. 39 And as the king passed by, he cried out to the king and said, “Your servant went out into the midst of the battle; and behold, a man turned aside and brought a man to me and said, ‘Guard this man; if for any reason he goes missing, ^athen your life shall be forfeited in place of his life, or else you shall pay a ¹talent of silver.’ 40 Now while your servant was busy here and there, he disappeared.” And the king of Israel said to him, “So shall your judgment be; you yourself determined it.” 41 Then he quickly took the bandage away from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him, that he was one of the prophets. 42 And the prophet said to him, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Since you have let go from your hand the man I had designated for destruction, ^ayour ¹life shall be forfeited in place of his ²life, and your people in place of his people.’” 43 So ^athe king of Israel went to his house sullen and furious, and came to Samaria.
