Sé, pues, fuerte^b y sé hombre. 3 Guarda los mandatos del SEÑOR tu Dios, andando en sus caminos, guardando sus estatutos, sus mandamientos, sus ordenanzas y sus testimonios, conforme a lo que está escrito en la ley de Moisés^a, para que prosperes^b en todo lo que hagas y dondequiera que vayas¹, 4 para que el SEÑOR cumpla la promesa que me hizo^1a, diciendo: «Si tus hijos guardan su camino^b, andando delante de mí con fidelidad², con todo su corazón^c y con toda su alma, no te faltará³ hombre sobre el trono de Israel^d». 5 También sabes lo que me hizo Joab, hijo de Sarvia^a, lo que hizo a los dos comandantes de los ejércitos de Israel, a Abner, hijo de Ner, y a Amasa^b, hijo de Jeter^c, a los cuales mató; también derramó¹ sangre de guerra en tiempo de paz. Y puso sangre de guerra en el cinturón que lo ceñía y en las sandalias que tenía en sus pies. 6 Haz, pues, conforme a tu sabiduría, y no permitas que sus canas desciendan al Seol^1a en paz. 7 Mas muestra bondad a los hijos de Barzilai galaadita^a, y que estén entre los que comen a tu mesa^b; porque ellos me ayudaron^1c cuando huía de tu hermano Absalón. 8 Y he aquí, está contigo Simei, hijo de Gera, benjamita de Bahurim^a; él fue el que me maldijo con una terrible¹ maldición el día que yo iba a Mahanaim. Mas cuando descendió a mi encuentro en el Jordán, le juré por el SEÑOR, diciendo: «No te mataré^b a espada». 9 Pero ahora, no lo dejes sin castigo, porque eres hombre sabio; sabrás lo que debes hacer con él y harás que desciendan sus canas con sangre al Seol^a.

10 Y durmió David con sus padres y fue sepultado^a en la ciudad de David^b. 11 Los días que David reinó sobre Israel fueron cuarenta años: siete años reinó en Hebrón, y treinta y tres años reinó en Jerusalén^a. 12 Salomón se sentó en el trono de David su padre y su reino se afianzó en gran manera^a.

13 Entonces Adonías, hijo de Haguit, vino a Betsabé, madre de Salomón; y ella le dijo: ¿Vienes en paz^a? Y él respondió: En paz. 14 Y añadió: Tengo algo que decirte¹. Y ella dijo: Habla. 15 Y él dijo: Tú sabes que el reino era mío^a y que todo Israel esperaba que yo fuera rey^1b; pero el reino ha cambiado de manos y ha venido a ser de mi hermano^c, porque por voluntad del SEÑOR era suyo^d. 16 Ahora yo te hago una petición, no me la niegues¹. Y ella le dijo: Habla. 17 Él entonces dijo: Te ruego que hables al rey Salomón, pues él no te lo negará, para que me dé por mujer a Abisag sunamita^a. 18 Y Betsabé dijo: Muy bien; hablaré por ti al rey.

19 Betsabé fue al rey Salomón para hablarle por Adonías. El rey se levantó a recibirla, se inclinó delante de ella, y se sentó en su trono; hizo colocar un trono para la madre del rey^a y ella se sentó a su diestra^b. 20 Entonces ella dijo: Te hago una pequeña petición; no me la niegues^a. Y el rey le dijo: Pide, madre mía, porque no te la negaré. 21 Y ella dijo: Que se dé a Abisag sunamita^a por mujer a tu hermano Adonías. 22 El rey Salomón respondió, y dijo a su madre: ¿Por qué pides a Abisag sunamita para Adonías? Pide para él también el reino^a, pues es mi hermano mayor^b, y con él están el sacerdote Abiatar y Joab, hijo de Sarvia^c. 23 Y el rey Salomón juró por el SEÑOR, diciendo: Así me haga Dios y aun más, si Adonías no ha hablado esta palabra contra su propia vida^1a. 24 Ahora pues, vive el SEÑOR que me ha confirmado y me ha puesto en el trono de mi padre David, y que me ha hecho una casa^1a como había prometido², que Adonías morirá hoy mismo. 25 El rey Salomón envió a¹ Benaía, hijo de Joiada^a, yeste arremetió contra Adonías² y lo mató³.

26 Entonces dijo el rey al sacerdote Abiatar: Vete a Anatot^a, a tu campo, porque mereces morir^1b; pero no te daré muerte en esta ocasión² porque llevaste el arca del Señor DIOS³ delante de mi padre David^c, y porque fuiste afligido con todas las cosas con que mi padre fue afligido^d. 27 Así Salomón privó¹ a Abiatar de ser sacerdote del SEÑOR, para que se cumpliera la palabra que el SEÑOR había hablado acerca de la casa de Elí^a en Silo.

28 Cuando las noticias llegaron a Joab (porque Joab había seguido a Adonías^a, aunque no había seguido a Absalón^b), Joab huyó a la tienda del SEÑOR y se asió de los cuernos del altar^c. 29 Y se le informó al rey Salomón que Joab había huido a la tienda del SEÑOR, y¹ que estaba junto al altar. Entonces Salomón envió a Benaía, hijo de Joiada^a, diciendo: Ve y arremete contra él^b. 30 Benaía entró en la tienda del SEÑOR y le dijo: Así ha dicho el rey: «Sal de ahí.» Pero él dijo: No, pues moriré aquí. Benaía llevó la respuesta¹ al rey, diciendo: Así habló Joab y así me respondió. 31 Y el rey le dijo: Haz como él ha dicho^a; arremete contra él, mátalo y entiérralo, para que quites de mí y de la casa de mi padre la sangre que Joab derramó sin causa^b. 32 El SEÑOR hará volver su sangre sobre su propia cabeza^a, porque él arremetió contra dos hombres más justos y mejores que él y los mató^b a espada sin que mi padre David lo supiera: a Abner^c, hijo de Ner, comandante del ejército de Israel, y a Amasa^d, hijo de Jeter, comandante del ejército de Judá. 33 Su sangre, pues, recaerá sobre la cabeza de Joab y sobre la cabeza de su descendencia¹ para siempre^a; pero para David y su descendencia², para su casa y su trono, haya paz de parte del SEÑOR para siempre. 34 Entonces subió Benaía, hijo de Joiada, arremetió contra él y lo mató^a; y fue sepultado en su casa en el desierto^b. 35 En su lugar el rey nombró sobre el ejército a Benaía, hijo de Joiada^a, y el rey nombró al sacerdote Sadoc^b en lugar de Abiatar^c.

36 Después el rey envió a llamar a Simei^a, y le dijo: Edifícate una casa en Jerusalén, vive ahí y no salgas de allí a ninguna parte. 37 Porque el día que salgas y pases el torrente Cedrón^a, ten por cierto que sin duda morirás; tu sangre recaerá¹ sobre tu cabeza^b. 38 Entonces Simei dijo al rey: La palabra es buena; como ha dicho el rey mi señor, así lo hará tu siervo. Y vivió Simei en Jerusalén muchos días.

39 Pero aconteció al cabo de tres años, que dos de los siervos de Simei huyeron a Aquis, hijo de Maaca, rey de Gat^a. Le avisaron a Simei, diciéndole: He aquí, tus siervos están en Gat. 40 Simei se levantó, ensilló su asno y fue a Gat a ver a Aquis para buscar a sus siervos. Fue, pues, Simei y trajo sus siervos de Gat. 41 Pero informaron a Salomón que Simei había ido de Jerusalén hasta Gat y había vuelto. 42 Entonces el rey envió a llamar a Simei y le dijo: ¿No te hice jurar por el SEÑOR y te advertí seriamente, diciendo: «El día que salgas y vayas a cualquier parte, ten por seguro que ciertamente morirás»? Y tú me dijiste: «La palabra que he oído es buena». 43 ¿Por qué, entonces, no guardaste el juramento del SEÑOR y el mandamiento que te impuse¹? 44 Dijo además el rey a Simei: Tú sabes todo el mal que hiciste a mi padre David^a, que tú reconoces en tu corazón¹; el SEÑOR, pues, hará recaer tu mal sobre tu propia cabeza^b. 45 Pero el rey Salomón será bendito, y el trono de David será firme delante del SEÑOR para siempre^a. 46 Entonces el rey mandó a Benaía, hijo de Joiada, yeste salió y arremetió contra Simei¹ y lo mató². Así fue confirmado el reino en las manos de Salomón^a.

When David’s ^atime to die approached, he gave instructions to Solomon his son, saying, 2 “^aI am going the way of all the earth as dust to dust. ^bBe strong and prove yourself a man. 3 Keep the charge of the LORD your God, that is, fulfill your obligation to walk in His ways, keep His statutes, His commandments, His precepts, and His testimonies, ^aas it is written in the Law of Moses, so that ^byou may succeed in everything that you do and wherever you turn, 4 so that ^athe LORD may fulfill His ¹promise concerning me, saying, ‘^bIf your sons are careful regarding their way of life, ^cto walk before Me in truth with all their heart and mind and with all their soul, you ^dshall not fail to have a man (descendant) on the throne of Israel.’

5 “Now you also know what Joab the ^ason of Zeruiah my sister did to me, and what he did to the two commanders of the armies of Israel, ^bto Abner the son of Ner and ^cto Amasa the son of Jether, both of whom he murdered; ¹avenging the blood of war in a time of peace. And he put the innocent blood of war of Abner and Amasa on his ²belt that was around his ³waist, and on his sandals on his feet. 6 ^aSo act in accordance with your wisdom, but do not let his gray head go down to Sheol (the place of the dead) in peace. 7 But ^abe gracious and kind to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and ^blet them be among those who have the honor to eat at your table; ^cfor they met me with kindness when I fled from your brother Absalom. 2+@Sam 17:27-29 8 And look, ^ayou have with you Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjamite of Bahurim; he is the one who cursed me with a sinister curse the day I went to Mahanaim. But ^bhe came down to meet me at the Jordan on my return, and I swore to him by the LORD, saying, ‘I will not put you to death with the sword.’ 9 But now do not let him go unpunished, ^afor you are a wise man; and you will know what to do to him, and you will bring his gray head down to Sheol covered with blood.”

10 So ^aDavid lay down with his fathers in death and was buried in ^bthe ¹City of David. 11 ^aThe time that David reigned over Israel was forty years: ^bhe reigned seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. 12 Then ^aSolomon sat on the throne of David his father, and his kingdom was firmly established.

13 Now Adonijah the son of David and Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. She said, “^aDo you come in peace?” And he said, “In peace.” 14 Then he said, “I have something to say to you.” And she said, “Speak.” 15 So he said, “You know that ^athe kingdom belonged to me as the eldest living son and ^ball Israel ¹looked to me and expected me to be king. ^cHowever, the kingdom has passed from me and became my brother’s, ^dfor it was his from the LORD. 16 So now I am making one request of you; do not ¹refuse me.” And she said to him, “Speak.” 17 He said, “Please speak to King Solomon, for he will not refuse you; ask that he may give me ^aAbishag the Shunammite as a wife.” 1+@Kin 1:1-4 18 Bathsheba replied, “Very well; I will speak to the king for you.”

19 So Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah. And the king rose to meet her, bowed before her, and sat down on his throne; then he had ^aa throne set for her, the king’s mother, and she sat on his right^b. 20 Then she said, “I am making one small request of you; ^ado not refuse me.” And the king said to her, “Ask, my mother, for I will not refuse you.” 21 So she said, “Let ^aAbishag the Shunammite be given to your brother Adonijah as a wife.” 22 King Solomon answered and said to his mother, “And why are you asking for ¹Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? ^aAsk the kingdom for him also—^bsince he is my older brother— ask it for him and for ^cAbiathar the priest and Joab the son of Zeruiah his supporters!” 23 Then King Solomon swore by the LORD, saying, “May God do the same to me, and more also, if Adonijah has ^anot requested this deplorable thing against his own ¹life. 24 So now, as the LORD lives, who has established me and set me on the throne of David my father, and ^awho has made me a house as He promised, Adonijah shall indeed be put to death today.” 25 So King Solomon ^asent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and he ¹struck Adonijah and he died.

26 Then the king said to Abiathar the priest, “^aGo to Anathoth to your own fields, ^bfor you ¹certainly deserve to die; but I will not put you to death this day, because ^cyou carried the ark of the Lord GOD before my father David, and ^dyou suffered everything that my father endured.” 27 So Solomon dismissed Abiathar a descendant of Eli from being priest to the LORD, fulfilling ^athe word of the LORD, which He had spoken concerning the house (descendants) of Eli in Shiloh. 1+@Sam 2:27-36

28 Now the news reached Joab, ^afor Joab had supported and followed Adonijah, ^balthough he had not followed Absalom. So Joab fled to the sacred tent of the LORD and ^ctook hold of the horns of the altar to seek asylum. 29 King Solomon was told that Joab had fled to the tent of the LORD and was at that moment beside the altar. Then Solomon ^asent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, “^bGo, ¹strike him down.” 30 So Benaiah came to the tent of the LORD and told Joab, “This is what the king commands, ‘Come out of there.’” But Joab said, “No, for I will die here.” Then Benaiah brought word to the king again, saying, “This is what Joab said, and this is how he answered me.” 31 The king said to him, “^aDo as he has said. ¹Strike him down and bury him, ^bso that you may remove from me and from my father’s house the innocent blood which Joab shed. 32 ^aThe LORD will return his bloody deeds upon his own head, ^bbecause he struck down two men more righteous and honorable than he and killed them with the sword, without my father David knowing: ^cAbner the son of Ner, commander of the army of Israel, and ^dAmasa the son of Jether, commander of the army of Judah. 33 ^aSo shall their blood return on the head of Joab and the heads of his descendants forever. But for David, his descendants, his house, and his throne, may there be peace from the LORD forever.” 34 So ^aBenaiah the son of Jehoiada went up to the tabernacle and struck and killed Joab, and he was buried at his own house ^bin the wilderness of Judah. 35 ^aThe king appointed Benaiah the son of Jehoiada over the army in Joab’s place, and appointed ^bZadok the priest ^cin place of Abiathar.

36 Now the king sent word and called for ^aShimei and said to him, “Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and live there. Do not go from there to ¹any other place. 37 For on the day you leave and ^across over the ¹Brook Kidron, know for certain that you shall surely die; ^byour blood shall be on your own head.” 38 Shimei said to the king, “The word (ruling) is good. As my lord the king has said, so will your servant do.” So Shimei lived in Jerusalem for many days.

39 But it happened after three years, that two of Shimei’s servants ran away ^ato Achish the son of Maacah, the king of ¹Gath. And Shimei was told, “Behold, your runaway servants are in Gath.” 40 So Shimei arose, saddled his donkey, and went to Gath to King Achish to look for his servants. And Shimei went and brought them back from Gath. 41 Now Solomon was told that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and had returned. 42 So the king sent word and called for Shimei and said to him, “Did I not make you swear by the LORD and solemnly warn you, saying, ‘Know for certain that on the day you leave Jerusalem and go anywhere, you shall surely die’? And you said to me, ‘The word (ruling) I have heard is good.’ 43 Why then have you not kept the oath of the LORD, and the command which I gave you?” 44 The king also said to Shimei, “^aYou are aware in your own heart of all the evil you did to my father David; so ^bthe LORD shall return your evil on your own head. 45 But King Solomon shall be blessed, and ^athe throne of David shall be established before the LORD forever.” 46 ^aSo the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and he went out and struck down Shimei, and he died.

^bSo the kingdom was established in the hands of Solomon.

As David’s ^1atime to die drew near, he commanded his son Solomon, saying, 2 “^aI am going the way of all the earth. So ^bbe strong, and ¹prove yourself a man. 3 Do your duty to the LORD your God, to walk in His ways, to ¹keep His statutes, His commandments, His ordinances, and His testimonies, ^aaccording to what is written in the Law of Moses, so that ^byou may succeed in all that you do and wherever you turn, 4 so that ^athe LORD may fulfill His ¹promise which He spoke regarding me, saying, ‘^bIf your sons are careful about their way, ^cto walk before Me in ²truth with all their heart and all their soul, ^3dyou shall not be deprived of a man to occupy the throne of Israel.’

5 “Now you yourself also know what Joab the ^ason of Zeruiah did to me, what he did to the two commanders of the armies of Israel, to ^bAbner the son of Ner and to ^cAmasa the son of Jether, whom he killed; he also ¹shed the blood of war in peace. And he put the blood of war on his belt that was on his waist, and on his sandals that were on his feet. 6 ^aSo act as your wisdom dictates, and do not let his gray hair go down to ¹Sheol in peace. 7 However, ^ashow kindness to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and ^blet them be among those who eat at your table; ^cfor ¹they assisted me when I fled from Absalom your brother. 8 And behold, you have with you ^aShimei the son of Gera the Benjaminite, of Bahurim; now it was he who cursed me with a painful curse on the day I went to Mahanaim. But when ^bhe came down to meet me at the Jordan, I swore to him by the LORD, saying, ‘I will not put you to death with the sword.’ 9 But now do not leave him unpunished, ^afor you are a wise man; and you will know what to do to him, and you will bring his gray hair down to ¹Sheol with blood.”

10 Then ^aDavid ¹lay down with his fathers, and he was buried in ^bthe city of David. 11 Now ^athe days that David reigned over Israel were forty years: in Hebron he reigned for ^bseven years, and in Jerusalem he reigned for thirty-three years. 12 Then ^aSolomon sat on the throne of his father David, and his kingdom was firmly established.

13 Now Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. So she said, “^aDo you come peacefully?” And he said, “Peacefully.” 14 Then he said, “I have something to say to you.” And she said, “Speak.” 15 So he said, “You yourself know that ^athe kingdom was mine and ^bthat all Israel ¹intended for me to be king; ^chowever, the kingdom has turned around and become my brother’s, ^dfor it was his from the LORD. 16 So now I am making one request of you; do not ¹refuse me.” And she said to him, “Speak.” 17 Then he said, “Please speak to Solomon the king—for he will not ¹refuse you—that he may give me ^aAbishag the Shunammite as a wife.” 18 And Bathsheba said, “Very well; I will speak to the king for you.”

19 So Bathsheba went to King Solomon, to speak to him for Adonijah. And the king stood to meet her, bowed to her, and sat on his throne; then he ^ahad a throne set up for the king’s mother, and ^bshe sat on his right. 20 Then she said, “I am making one small request of you; ^ado not ¹refuse me.” And the king said to her, “Ask, my mother, for I will not ²refuse you.” 21 So she said, “^aLet Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah your brother as a wife.” 22 But King Solomon answered and said to his mother, “And why are you requesting Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? ^aRequest for him the kingdom as well—^bsince he is my older brother—for him, for ^cAbiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah!” 23 Then King Solomon swore by the LORD, saying, “May God do so to me and more so, if Adonijah has ^anot spoken this word against his own ¹life! 24 Now then, as the LORD lives, who has established me and set me on the throne of David my father, and ^ahas made me a house just as He ¹promised, Adonijah certainly shall be put to death today!” 25 Then King Solomon ^asent the order by Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he ¹struck him so that he died.

26 Then to Abiathar the priest the king said, “^aGo to Anathoth to your own field, ^bfor you ¹deserve to die; but I will not put you to death at this ²time, because ^cyou carried the ark of the Lord ³GOD before my father David, and because ^dyou were afflicted in everything with which my father was afflicted.” 27 So Solomon dismissed Abiathar from being priest to the LORD, to fulfill ^athe word of the LORD, which He had spoken regarding the house of Eli in Shiloh.

28 Now the news came to Joab ^abecause Joab had followed Adonijah, ^bthough he had not followed Absalom. So Joab fled to the tent of the LORD and ^ctook hold of the horns of the altar. 29 And it was reported to King Solomon that Joab had fled to the tent of the LORD, and ¹was beside the altar. Then Solomon ^asent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, “^bGo, ²execute him.” 30 So Benaiah came to the tent of the LORD and said to him, “This is what the king has said: ‘Come out.’” But he said, “No, for I will die here.” So Benaiah brought back word to the king, saying, “This is what Joab spoke, and so he answered me.” 31 And the king said to him, “^aDo just as he has spoken, and ¹execute him and bury him, ^bso that you may remove from me and from my father’s house the blood which Joab shed without ²justification. 32 ^aThe LORD will return his blood on his own head, ^bbecause he ¹struck two men more righteous and better than he, and killed them with the sword, while my father David did not know about it: ^cAbner the son of Ner, commander of the army of Israel, and ^dAmasa the son of Jether, commander of the army of Judah. 33 ^aSo their blood shall return on the head of Joab and on the head of his ¹descendants forever; but for David and his ²descendants, and his house and his throne, may there be peace from the LORD forever.” 34 Then ^aBenaiah the son of Jehoiada went up and ¹struck him and put him to death, and he was buried at his own house ^bin the wilderness. 35 And ^athe king appointed Benaiah the son of Jehoiada over the army in his place, and the king appointed ^bZadok the priest ^cin place of Abiathar.

36 Now the king sent men and summoned ^aShimei, and said to him, “Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and live there, and do not leave there for any other place. 37 For on the day you leave and ^across the ¹brook Kidron, you will know for certain that you will assuredly die; ^byour blood will be ²on your own head.” 38 Shimei then said to the king, “The word is good. Just as my lord the king has spoken, so your servant shall do.” So Shimei lived in Jerusalem for many days.

39 But it came about at the end of three years, that two of Shimei’s servants ran away ^ato Achish son of Maacah, king of Gath. And others told Shimei, saying, “Behold, your servants are in Gath.” 40 Then Shimei got up and saddled his donkey, and went to Gath to Achish, to search for his servants. And Shimei went and brought his servants from Gath. 41 And it was reported to Solomon that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and had returned. 42 So the king sent men and summoned Shimei, and said to him, “Did I not make you swear by the LORD, and solemnly warn you, saying, ‘Know for certain that on the day you depart and go anywhere, you shall assuredly die’? And you said to me, ‘The word I have heard is good.’ 43 Why then have you not kept the oath of the LORD, and the command which I ¹imposed on you?” 44 The king also said to Shimei, “^aYou yourself know all the evil that ¹you acknowledge in your heart, which you did to my father David; therefore ^bthe LORD will return your evil on your own head. 45 But King Solomon will be blessed, and ^athe throne of David will be established before the LORD forever.” 46 ^aSo the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and he went out and ¹struck him so that he died.

^bAnd the kingdom was established in the hands of Solomon.
