Cuidad de no practicar vuestra justicia delante de los hombres para ser vistos por ellos^a; de otra manera no tendréis recompensa de vuestro Padre que está en los cielos.

2 Por eso, cuando des limosna¹, no toques trompeta delante de ti, como hacen los hipócritas en las sinagogas y en las calles, para ser alabados por los hombres^a. En verdad os digo que ya han recibido su recompensa^b. 3 Pero tú, cuando des limosna, que no sepa tu mano izquierda lo que hace tu derecha, 4 para que tu limosna¹ sea en secreto; y tu Padre, que ve en lo secreto, te recompensará^2a.

5 Y cuando oréis, no seáis como los hipócritas; porque a ellos les gusta ponerse en pie y orar en las sinagogas y en las esquinas de las calles^a, para ser vistos por los hombres^1b. En verdad os digo que ya han recibido su recompensa^c. 6 Pero tú, cuando ores, entra en tu aposento, y cuando hayas cerrado la puerta^a, ora a tu Padre que está en secreto, y tu Padre, que ve en lo secreto, te recompensará^b. 7 Y al orar, no uséis repeticiones sin sentido, como los gentiles, porque ellos se imaginan que serán oídos por su palabrería^a. 8 Por tanto, no os hagáis semejantes a ellos; porque vuestro Padre sabe lo que necesitáis antes que vosotros le pidáis^a.

9 ^aVosotros, pues, orad de esta manera:«Padre nuestro que estás en los cielos,santificado sea tu nombre.

14 Porque si perdonáis a los hombres sus transgresiones, también vuestro Padre celestial os perdonará a vosotros^a. 15 Pero si no perdonáis a los hombres, tampoco vuestro Padre perdonará vuestras transgresiones^a.

16 Y cuando ayunéis^a, no pongáis cara triste, como los hipócritas; porque ellos desfiguran¹ sus rostros para mostrar a los hombres que están ayunando. En verdad os digo que ya han recibido su recompensa^b. 17 Pero tú, cuando ayunes, unge tu cabeza y lava tu rostro^a, 18 para no hacer ver¹ a los hombres que ayunas, sino a tu Padre que está en secreto; y tu Padre, que ve en lo secreto, te recompensará^a.

19 No os acumuléis tesoros en la tierra, donde la polilla y la herrumbre destruyen, y donde ladrones penetran¹ y roban^a; 20 sino acumulaos tesoros en el cielo^a, donde ni la polilla ni la herrumbre destruyen, y donde ladrones no penetran ni roban; 21 porque donde esté tu¹ tesoro^a, allí estará también tu² corazón. 22 ^aLa lámpara del cuerpo es el ojo; por eso, si tu ojo está sano¹, todo tu cuerpo estará lleno de luz. 23 Pero si tu ojo está malo^a, todo tu cuerpo estará lleno de oscuridad. Así que, si la luz que hay en ti es oscuridad, ¡cuán grande será la oscuridad! 24 Nadie puede servir a dos señores^a; porque o aborrecerá a uno y amará al otro, o se apegará a uno y despreciará al otro. No podéis servir a Dios y a las riquezas^1b. 25 ^aPor eso os digo, no os preocupéis por vuestra vida^b, qué comeréis o qué beberéis; ni por vuestro cuerpo, qué vestiréis. ¿No es la vida más que el alimento y el cuerpo más que la ropa? 26 Mirad las aves del cielo, que no siembran, ni siegan, ni recogen en graneros, y sin embargo, vuestro Padre celestial las alimenta^a. ¿No sois vosotros de mucho más valor que ellas? 27 ¿Y quién de vosotros, por ansioso^a que esté, puede añadir una hora¹ al curso de su vida^2b? 28 Y por la ropa, ¿por qué os preocupáis^a? Observad cómo crecen los lirios del campo; no trabajan, ni hilan; 29 pero os digo que ni Salomón^a en toda su gloria se vistió como uno deestos. 30 Y si Dios viste así la hierba del campo, que hoy es y mañana es echada al horno, ¿no hará mucho más por vosotros, hombres de poca fe^a? 31 Por tanto, no os preocupéis^a, diciendo: «¿Qué comeremos?» o «¿qué beberemos?» o «¿con qué nos vestiremos?». 32 Porque los gentiles buscan ansiosamente todas estas cosas; que vuestro Padre celestial^a sabe que necesitáis de todas estas cosas. 33 Pero buscad¹ primero su² reino³ y su justicia, y todas estas cosas os serán añadidas^4a. 34 Por tanto, no os preocupéis^a por el día de mañana; porque el día de mañana se cuidará¹ de sí mismo. Bástele a cada² día sus propios problemas.

“Be very careful not to do your ¹good deeds publicly, ^ato be seen by men; otherwise you will have no reward prepared and awaiting you with your Father who is in heaven.

2 “So whenever you give to the poor and do acts of kindness, do not blow a trumpet before you to advertise it, as the hypocrites do like actors acting out a role in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they ^amay be honored and recognized and praised by men. ^bI assure you and most solemnly say to you, they already have their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the poor and do acts of kindness, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing give in complete secrecy, 4 so that your charitable acts will be done in secret; and ^ayour Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

5 “Also, when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to ^apray publicly standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets ^bso that they may be seen by men. ^cI assure you and most solemnly say to you, they already have their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, ^ago into your most private room, close the door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and ^byour Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

7 “And when you pray, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they think they will be heard because of their ^amany words. 1+@Kin 18:25-29 8 So do not be like them praying as they do; for ^ayour Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

9 “^aPray, then, ¹in this way:‘Our Father, who is in heaven,²Hallowed be Your name. Luke 11:2-4

14 ^aFor if you forgive ¹others their trespasses their reckless and willful sins, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But ^aif you do not forgive others nurturing your hurt and anger with the result that it interferes with your relationship with God, then your Father will not forgive your trespasses.

16 “And ^awhenever you are fasting, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they put on a sad and dismal face like actors, discoloring their faces with ashes or dirt so that their fasting may be seen by men. ^bI assure you and most solemnly say to you, they already have their reward in full. Is 58:5 17 But when you fast, ^aput oil on your head as you normally would to groom your hair and wash your face 18 so that your fasting will not be noticed by people, but by your Father who is in secret; and your ^aFather who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

19 “^aDo not store up for yourselves material treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves ^atreasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal; 21 for ^awhere your treasure is, there your heart your wishes, your desires; that on which your life centers will be also.

22 “^aThe eye is the lamp of the body; so if your eye is clear spiritually perceptive, your whole body will be full of light benefiting from God’s precepts. 23 But if ^ayour eye is bad spiritually blind, your whole body will be full of darkness devoid of God’s precepts. So if the very light inside you your inner self, your heart, your conscience is darkness, how great and terrible is that darkness!

24 “^aNo one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and ^bmammon money, possessions, fame, status, or whatever is valued more than the Lord.

25 “^aTherefore I tell you, stop being ^bworried or anxious (perpetually uneasy, distracted) about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, as to what you will wear. Is life not more than food, and the body more than clothing? Luke 12:22-31 26 ^aLook at the birds of the air; they neither sow seed nor reap the harvest nor gather the crops into barns, and yet your heavenly Father keeps feeding them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27 And who of you by ^aworrying can ^badd one ¹hour to the length of his life? Ps 39:5-7 28 And why are you ^aworried about clothes? See how the lilies and wildflowers of the field grow; they do not labor nor do they spin wool to make clothing, 29 yet I say to you that not even ^aSolomon in all his glory and splendor dressed himself like one of these. 1+@Kin 10:4-7 30 But if God so clothes the ^agrass of the field, which is alive and green today and tomorrow is cut and thrown as fuel into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? ^bYou of little faith! 31 Therefore do not ^aworry or be anxious (perpetually uneasy, distracted) , saying, ‘What are we going to eat?’ or ‘What are we going to drink?’ or ‘What are we going to wear?’ 32 For the pagan Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; but do not worry, for ^ayour heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But first and most importantly seek (aim at, strive after) His kingdom and His righteousness His way of doing and being right—the attitude and character of God, and ^aall these things will be given to you also.

34 “So do not ^aworry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before men ^ato be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.
