Mas los hijos de Israel fueron infieles en cuanto al anatema, porque Acán, hijo de Carmi, hijo de Zabdi¹, hijo de Zera, de la tribu de Judá, tomó de las cosas dedicadas al anatema^a; y la ira del SEÑOR se encendió contra los hijos de Israel.

2 Y Josué envió hombres desde Jericó a Hai, que está cerca de Bet-avén^a al este de Betel, y les dijo¹: Subid y reconoced la tierra. Y los hombres subieron y reconocieron a Hai. 3 Cuando volvieron a Josué, le dijeron: Que no suba todo el pueblo;solo¹ dos o tres mil hombres subirán² a Hai; no hagas cansar a todo el pueblo subiendo allá, porque ellos son pocos. 4 Así que subieron allá unos tres mil hombres del pueblo, pero huyeron^a ante los hombres de Hai. 5 Y los hombres de Hai hirieron de ellos a unos treinta y seis hombres, y los persiguieron desde¹ la puerta hasta Sebarim, y los derrotaron² en la bajada; y el corazón del pueblo desfalleció y se hizo como agua^a.

6 Entonces Josué rasgó sus vestidos y postró su rostro en tierra delante del arca del SEÑOR hasta el anochecer, él y los ancianos de Israel; y echaron polvo sobre sus cabezas^a. 7 Y Josué dijo: ¡Ah, Señor DIOS¹! ¿Por qué hiciste pasar a este pueblo el Jordán, para entregarnos después en manos de los amorreos y destruirnos? ¡Ojalá nos hubiéramos propuesto habitar² al otro lado del Jordán! 8 ¡Ah, Señor! ¿Qué puedo decir, ya que Israel ha vuelto la espalda¹ ante sus enemigos? 9 Porque los cananeos y todos los habitantes de la tierra se enterarán de ello, y nos rodearán y borrarán nuestro nombre de la tierra^a. ¿Y qué harás tú por tu gran nombre?

10 Y el SEÑOR dijo a Josué: ¡Levántate! ¿Por qué te has postrado rostro en tierra? 11 Israel ha pecado y también ha transgredido mi pacto que les ordené. Y hasta han tomado de las cosas dedicadas al anatema, y también han robado y mentido^a, y además las han puesto entre sus propias cosas. 12 No pueden, pues, los hijos de Israel hacer frente a sus enemigos^a; vuelven la espalda¹ delante de sus enemigos porque han venido a ser anatema. No estaré más con vosotros a menos que destruyáis las cosas dedicadas al anatema de en medio de vosotros. 13 Levántate, consagra al pueblo y di: «Consagraos para mañana^a, porque así ha dicho el SEÑOR, Dios de Israel: “Hay anatema en medio de ti, oh Israel. No podrás hacer frente a tus enemigos hasta que quitéis el anatema de en medio de vosotros^b”. 14 Por la mañana os acercaréis, pues, por¹ tribus. Y será que la tribu que el SEÑOR señale se acercará por familias, y la familia que el SEÑOR señale se acercará por casas, y la casa que el SEÑOR señale se acercará hombre por hombre^a. 15 Y será que el hombre que sea sorprendido con las cosas dedicadas al anatema será quemado^a, él y todo lo que le pertenece, porque ha quebrantado el pacto del SEÑOR, y ha cometido infamia en Israel^b».

16 Y Josué se levantó muy de mañana, e hizo acercar a Israel por¹ tribus, y fue designada la tribu de Judá. 17 Mandó acercar a las familias de Judá, y fue designada la familia de los de Zera; e hizo acercar a la familia de Zera, hombre por hombre, y Zabdi fue designado. 18 Mandó acercar su casa hombre por hombre; y fue designado Acán¹, hijo de Carmi, hijo de Zabdi, hijo de Zera, de la tribu de Judá^a. 19 Entonces Josué dijo a Acán: Hijo mío, te ruego, da gloria al SEÑOR, Dios de Israel^a, y dale alabanza; y declárame ahora lo que has hecho. No me lo ocultes. 20 Y Acán respondió a Josué, y dijo: En verdad he pecado contra el SEÑOR, Dios de Israel, y esto es lo que he hecho¹: 21 cuando vi entre el botín un hermoso manto de Sinar y doscientos siclos¹ de plata y una barra de oro de cincuenta siclos de peso, los codicié y los tomé^a; y he aquí, están escondidos en la tierra dentro de mi tienda con la plata debajo.

22 Y Josué envió emisarios, que fueron corriendo a la tienda, y he aquí que el manto estaba escondido en su tienda con la plata debajo. 23 Y los sacaron de la tienda, los llevaron a Josué y a todos los hijos de Israel, y los pusieron delante del SEÑOR. 24 Entonces Josué, y con él todo Israel, tomó a Acán, hijo de Zera, y la plata, el manto, la barra de oro, sus hijos, sus hijas, sus bueyes¹, sus asnos, sus ovejas, su tienda y todo lo que le pertenecía, y los llevaron al valle de Acor^a. 25 Y Josué dijo: ¿Por qué nos has turbado^a? El SEÑOR te turbará hoy. Y todo Israel los apedreó¹ y los quemaron después de haberlos apedreado². 26 Y levantaron sobre él un gran montón de piedras que permanece hasta hoy; y el SEÑOR se volvió del furor de su ira. Por eso se ha llamado aquel lugar el valle de Acor^1a hasta el día de hoy.

^aBut the sons of Israel acted unfaithfully and violated their obligation in regard to the things off limits under the ban those things belonging to the LORD, for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, took some of the things under the ban for personal gain. Therefore the anger of the LORD burned against the Israelites.

2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near ^aBeth-aven, east of Bethel, and said to them, “Go up and spy out the land.” So the men went up and spied out Ai. 3 Then they returned to Joshua and said to him, “Do not make all the people go up to fight; have only about two thousand or three thousand men go up and attack Ai; do not make the entire army go up there, for they of Ai are few.” 4 So about three thousand men from the sons of Israel went up there, but ^athey fled in retreat from the men of Ai. 5 The men of Ai killed about thirty-six of Israel’s men, and chased them from the gate as far as the bluffs of Shebarim and struck them down as they descended the steep pass, so the ^ahearts of the people melted in despair and began to doubt God’s promise and became like water (disheartened) .

6 Then Joshua ^atore his clothes and fell face downward on the ground before the ark of the LORD until evening, he and the elders of Israel; and with great sorrow ^bthey put dust on their heads. 7 Joshua said, “Alas, O Lord ¹GOD, why have You brought this people across the Jordan at all, only to hand us over to the Amorites, to destroy us? If only we had been willing to live beyond the Jordan! 8 O Lord, what can I say now that the army of Israel has turned back in retreat and fled before their enemies? 9 ^aFor the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear about it, and will surround us and cut off our name from the earth. And what will You do for Your great name to keep it from dishonor?”

10 So the LORD said to Joshua, “Get up! Why is it that you have fallen on your face? 11 Israel has sinned; ^athey have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them to keep. They have even taken some of the things under the ban, and they have both stolen and ¹denied the theft. Moreover, they have also put the stolen objects among their own things. 12 That is why the ^1asoldiers of Israel could not stand and defend themselves before their enemies; they turned their backs and ran before them, because they have become accursed. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy the things under the ban from among you. 13 Rise up! ^aConsecrate the people and say, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, for thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: “^bThere are things under the ban among you, O Israel. You cannot stand victorious before your enemies until you remove the things under the ban from among you.” 14 In the morning you shall come forward by your tribes. And it shall be that the tribe which ^athe LORD chooses by lot shall come forward by families, and the family which the LORD chooses shall come forward by separate households, and the household which the LORD chooses shall come forward man by man. 15 ^aIt shall be that the one who is chosen with the things under the ban shall be killed and his body burned with fire, he and all that belongs to him, because he has transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he ^bhas done a ¹disgraceful and disobedient thing in Israel.’” Josh 7:25

16 So Joshua got up early in the morning and had Israel come forward by tribes, and the tribe of Judah was chosen by lot. 17 He had the families of Judah come forward, and the family of the Zerahites was chosen; and he had the family of the Zerahites come forward man by man, and Zabdi was chosen. 18 He brought his household forward man by man; and ^aAchan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was chosen. 19 Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, I implore you, ^agive glory to the LORD, the God of Israel, and give praise to Him in recognition of His righteous judgments; and tell me now what you have done. Do not hide it from me.” 20 So Achan answered Joshua and said, “In truth, I have sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel, and this is what I have done: 21 when I saw among the spoils in Jericho a ¹beautiful robe from Shinar (southern Babylon) and two hundred shekels of silver and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels, I ^awanted them and took them. Behold, they are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”

22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and they saw the stolen objects hidden in his tent, with the silver underneath. 23 And they took them from the tent and brought them to Joshua and to all the sons of Israel, and ¹spread them out before the LORD. 24 Then Joshua and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the royal robe, the bar of gold, ¹his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and everything that he had; and they brought them up to ^athe Valley of Achor (Disaster) . 25 Joshua said, “Why have you brought ^adisaster on us? The LORD will bring you disaster this day.” Then all Israel stoned them to death with stones; afterward they burned their bodies in the fire. 26 Then they piled up over him a great heap of stones that remains to this day. Then the LORD turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called ^athe Valley of Achor (Disaster) to this day.

And what will You do for Your great name?”

I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy the things under the ban from your midst. 13 Rise up! ^aConsecrate the people and say, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, for thus the LORD, the God of Israel, has said, “^bThere are things under the ban in your midst, O Israel. 16 So Joshua arose early in the morning and brought Israel near by ¹tribes, and the tribe of Judah was taken. 17 He brought the family of Judah near, and he took the family of the Zerahites; and he brought the family of the Zerahites near man by man, and Zabdi was taken. 18 He brought his household near man by man; and ^aAchan, son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, was taken. 19 Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, I implore you, ^agive glory to the LORD, the God of Israel, and give praise to Him; and tell me now what you have done. The LORD will trouble you this day.” And all Israel stoned ¹them with stones; and they burned them with fire ²after they had stoned them with stones. 26 They raised over him a great heap of stones that stands to this day, and the LORD turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called ^athe valley of ¹Achor to this day.

Furthermore, they have also put them among their own things. 12 Therefore the ^asons of Israel cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their ¹backs before their enemies, because they have become designated for destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you eliminate from your midst the things designated for destruction. 13 Stand up! ^aConsecrate the people and say, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, because the LORD, the God of Israel, has said this: “^bThere are things designated for destruction in your midst, Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you have removed the designated things from your midst.” 14 So in the morning you shall come forward by your tribes. And it shall be that the tribe which ^athe LORD selects by lot shall come forward by families, and the family which the LORD selects shall come forward by households, and the household which the LORD selects shall come forward man by man. 15 And ^ait shall be that the one who is selected with the things designated for destruction shall be burned with fire, he and all that belongs to him, because he has violated the covenant of the LORD, and because he ^bhas committed a disgraceful thing in Israel.’”

16 So Joshua got up early in the morning and brought Israel forward by ¹tribes, and the tribe of Judah was selected. 17 So he brought the family of Judah forward, and he selected the family of the Zerahites; then he brought the family of the Zerahites forward man by man, and Zabdi was selected. 18 And he brought his household forward man by man; and ^aAchan, son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, was selected. 19 Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, I implore you, ^agive glory to the LORD, the God of Israel, and give praise to Him; and tell me now what you have done. Therefore the name of that place has been called ^athe Valley of ¹Achor to this day.
