Now a certain man named Lazarus was sick. He was from ^1aBethany, the village where Mary and her sister ^bMartha lived. 2 It was the Mary who ^aanointed ^bthe Lord with perfume and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. John 12:3 3 So the sisters sent word to Him, saying, “^aLord, ^bhe our brother and Your friend whom You love is sick.” 4 When Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness will not end in death; but on the contrary it is for ^athe glory and honor of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.” 5 Now Jesus loved and was concerned about ^aMartha and her sister and Lazarus and considered them dear friends. 6 ¹So even when He heard that Lazarus was sick, He stayed in the same place two more days. 7 Then He said to His disciples, “^aLet us go back to Judea.” 8 The disciples said to Him, “^aRabbi (Teacher) , the Jews were only recently going ^bto stone You, and You are thinking of going back there again?” 9 Jesus answered, “^aAre there not twelve hours of light in the day? Anyone who walks in the daytime does not stumble, because he sees by the light of this world. 10 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because there is no light in him.” 11 He said this, and after that said, “Our ^afriend Lazarus ^bhas fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him.” 12 The disciples answered, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” 13 However, ^aJesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was referring to natural sleep. 14 So then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. 15 And for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” 16 ^aThen Thomas, who was called ^bDidymus (the twin) , said to his fellow disciples, “Let us go too, that we may die with Him.”

17 So when Jesus arrived, He found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb ^1afour days. 18 ^aBethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles away; 19 and many of ^athe Jews had come to see ^bMartha and Mary, ^cto comfort them concerning the loss of their brother. 20 So when ^aMartha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet Him, while ^bMary remained sitting in the house. 21 Then Martha said to Jesus, “^aLord, ^bif You had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 Even now I know that ^awhatever You ask of God, God will give to You.” 23 Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise from the dead.” 24 Martha replied, “^aI know that he will rise from the dead in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “^1aI am the Resurrection and the Life. Whoever believes in (adheres to, trusts in, relies on) Me as Savior will live even if he dies; 26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me as Savior ^awill never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have believed and continue to believe that You are ^athe Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed) , the Son of God, ^1bHe who was destined and promised to come into the world and it is for You that the world has waited.”

28 After she had said this, she ^aleft and called her sister Mary, privately whispering to her, “^bThe Teacher is here and is asking for you.” 29 And when she heard this, she got up quickly and went to Him.

30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but ^awas still at the place where Martha had met Him. 31 ^aSo when the Jews who were with her in the house ^bcomforting her, saw how quickly Mary got up and left, they followed her, assuming that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 When Mary came to the place where Jesus was and saw Him, she fell at His feet, saying to Him, “^aLord, ^bif You had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her sobbing, and ^athe Jews who had come with her also sobbing, He ^bwas ¹deeply moved in spirit to the point of anger at the sorrow caused by death and ^cwas troubled, 34 and said, “Where have you laid him?” They said, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus ^awept. 36 ^aSo the Jews were saying, “See how He ^bloved him as a close friend!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not this Man, who ^aopened the blind man’s eyes, have kept this man from dying?”

38 So Jesus, again deeply moved within to the point of anger, approached the tomb. It was a ^acave, and a boulder was lying against it to cover the entrance. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there will be an offensive odor, for he has been dead ^afour days! It is hopeless!” 40 Jesus said to her, “^aDid I not say to you that if you believe in Me, you will see the glory of God the expression of His excellence?” 41 So they took away the ^astone. And Jesus ^braised His eyes toward heaven and said, “^cFather, I thank You that You have heard Me. 42 I knew that You always hear Me and listen to Me; but I have said this ^abecause of the people standing around, so that they may believe that ^bYou have sent Me and that You have made Me Your representative.” 43 When He had said this, He shouted with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 Out came the man who had been dead, his ^ahands and feet tightly wrapped in burial cloths (linen strips) , and with a burial ^bcloth wrapped around his face. Jesus said to them, “Unwrap him and release him.”

45 ^aSo then, many of the Jews ^bwho had come to be with Mary and who ^cwere eyewitnesses to what Jesus had done, believed in Him. 46 But some of them went back to the ^aPharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

47 So ^athe chief priests and Pharisees ^bconvened a ^ccouncil of the leaders in Israel, and said, “What are we doing? For this man performs many ^dsigns (attesting miracles) . 48 If we let Him go on like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our holy ^aplace (the temple) and our nation.” 49 But one of them, ^1aCaiaphas, ^bwho was the high priest that year the year of Christ’s crucifixion, said to them, “You know nothing at all! 50 Nor do you understand that ^ait is expedient and politically advantageous for you that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.” 51 Now he did not say this simply on his own initiative; but ^abeing the high priest that year, he was unknowingly used by God and prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, Is 53:8 52 and not only for the nation, but also for the purpose of ^agathering together into one body the children of God who have been scattered abroad. Is 49:6 53 So from that day on they ^aplanned together to kill Him.

54 For that reason Jesus ^ano longer walked openly among the Jews, but left there and went to the district that borders on the uninhabited wilderness, to a town called ^bEphraim; and He stayed there with the disciples.

55 Now ^athe Passover of the Jews was approaching, and many from the country went up to Jerusalem before Passover ^bto purify themselves ceremonially, so that they would be able to participate in the feast. 56 So they ^awere looking for Jesus as they stood in the temple area, and saying among themselves, “What do you think? Will He not come to the feast at all?” 57 Now ^athe chief priests and Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he was to report it so that they might arrest Him.

Now a certain man was sick: Lazarus of ^aBethany, the village of Mary and her sister ^bMartha. 2 And it was the Mary who ^aanointed ^bthe Lord with ¹ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3 So the sisters sent word to Him, saying, “^aLord, behold, ^bhe whom You love is sick.” 4 But when Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness is not ¹meant for death, but is for ^athe glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.” 5 (Now Jesus loved ^aMartha and her sister, and Lazarus.) 6 So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days longer in the place where He was. 7 Then after this He *said to the disciples, “^aLet’s go to Judea again.” 8 The disciples *said to Him, “^aRabbi, the Jews were just now seeking ^bto stone You, and yet You are going there again?” 9 Jesus replied, “^aAre there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if anyone walks during the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in ¹him.” 11 This He said, and after this He *said to them, “Our ^afriend Lazarus ^bhas fallen asleep; but I am going so that I may awaken him from sleep.” 12 The disciples then said to Him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will ¹come out of it.” 13 Now ^aJesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about ¹actual sleep. 14 So Jesus then said to them plainly, “Lazarus died, 15 and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let’s go to him.” 16 ^aTherefore Thomas, who was called ^1bDidymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s also go, so that we may die with Him!”

17 So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb ^afour days. 18 Now ^aBethany was near Jerusalem, about ¹fifteen stadia away; 19 and many of ^athe Jews had come to ^bMartha and Mary, ^cto console them about their brother. 20 So then ^aMartha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but ^bMary ¹stayed in the house. 21 Martha then said to Jesus, “^aLord, ^bif You had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 Even now I know that ^awhatever You ask of God, God will give You.” 23 Jesus *said to her, “Your brother will rise from the dead.” 24 Martha *said to Him, “^aI know that he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “^aI am the resurrection and the life; the one who believes in Me will live, even if he dies, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me ^awill never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have come to believe that You are ^athe ¹Christ, the Son of God, and ^2bHe who comes into the world.”

28 When she had said this, she ^aleft and called Mary her sister, saying secretly, “^bThe Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29 And when she heard this, she *got up quickly and came to Him.

30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but ^awas still at the place where Martha met Him. 31 ^aThen the Jews who were with her in the house and were ^bconsoling her, when they saw that Mary had gotten up quickly and left, they followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 So when Mary came to the place where Jesus was, she saw Him and fell at His feet, saying to Him, “^aLord, ^bif You had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 Therefore when Jesus saw her weeping, and ^athe Jews who came with her also weeping, He ^bwas deeply moved in spirit and ^1cwas troubled, 34 and He said, “Where have you laid him?” They *said to Him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus ^awept. 36 So ^athe Jews were saying, “See how He ^bloved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could this Man, who ^aopened the eyes of the man who was blind, not have also ¹kept this man from dying?”

38 So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, *came to the tomb. Now it was a ^acave, and a stone was lying against it. 39 Jesus *said, “Remove the stone.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, *said to Him, “Lord, by this time ¹there will be a stench, for he has been dead ^afour days.” 40 Jesus *said to her, “^aDid I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” 41 So they removed the ^astone. And Jesus ^braised His eyes, and said, “^cFather, I thank You that You have heard Me. 42 But I knew that You always hear Me; nevertheless, ^abecause of the ¹people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that ^bYou sent Me.” 43 And when He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 Out came the man who had died, ^abound hand and foot with wrappings, and ^bhis face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus *said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

45 ^aTherefore many of the Jews ^bwho came to Mary, and ^csaw what He had done, believed in Him. 46 But some of them went to the ^aPharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.

47 Therefore ^athe chief priests and the Pharisees ^bconvened a ^ccouncil meeting, and they were saying, “What are we ¹doing in regard to the fact that this Man is performing many ^2dsigns? 48 If we let Him go on like this, all the people will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take over both our ^1aplace and our nation.” 49 But one of them, ^aCaiaphas, ^bwho was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, 50 nor are you taking into account that ^ait is in your best interest that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish instead.” 51 Now he did not say this ¹on his own, but ^aas he was high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation; 52 and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also ^agather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they ^aplanned together to kill Him.

54 Therefore Jesus ^ano longer continued to walk publicly among the Jews, but went away from there to the region near the wilderness, into a city called ^bEphraim; and there He stayed with the disciples.

55 Now ^athe Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem from the country prior to the Passover, ^bin order to ¹purify themselves. 56 So they ^awere looking for Jesus, and saying to one another as they stood in the temple area, “What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all?” 57 Now ^athe chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he was to report it, so that they might arrest Him.
