Prophecies about Babylon

The mournful, ^ainspired oracle (¹a burden to be carried) concerning ^bBabylon which ^cIsaiah the son of Amoz saw in a prophetic vision:

2 ^aLift up a signal banner on the ^bbare mountain,Summon them the Medes and Persians with a loud voice,Wave ^cthe beckoning hand so that they may ^denter the doorways of the Babylonian nobles.3 I the LORD have commanded My consecrated ones,I have even called My ^agreat warriors,My proudly exulting ones the Medes and the Persians who triumph for My honor—To execute My anger.4 A ^asound of tumult on the mountains,Like that of many people!A sound of the uproar of the kingdoms,Of nations gathered together!The LORD of hosts is mustering an army for battle.5 They are coming from a distant country,From the ^aend of heaven the farthest horizon—The LORD and the weapons of His ^bindignation—To ^cdestroy the whole land. Judgment on the Day of the LORD

6 Wail, for the ^aday of the LORD is at hand!It will come as ¹^bdestruction from the ²Almighty (All Sufficient One—Invincible God) ! Gen 17:17 Therefore ¹^aall hands will fall limp,And every man’s ^bheart will melt.8 They of Babylon will be shocked and ^aterrified,Pains and anguish will grip them;They will ^bbe in pain like a woman in childbirth.They will stare aghast and horrified at one another,Their faces aflame from the effects of the unprecedented warfare.9 Listen carefully, ^athe day of the LORD is coming,Cruel, with wrath and raging anger,To make the land a horror of devastation;And He shall exterminate its sinners from it. Is 2:10-22; Rev 19:11-2110 For the ^astars of heaven and their constellationsWill not flash with their light;The ^bsun will be dark when it rises,And the moon will not shed its light.11 In this way I will ^apunish the world for its evilAnd the ^bwicked for their wickedness their sin, their injustice, their wrongdoing;I will also put an end to the ^carrogance of the proudAnd will abase the ^darrogance of the ^etyrant.12 I will make mortal man ^amore rare than fine gold,And mankind scarcer than the pure ^bgold of Ophir.13 Therefore I will make the ^aheavens tremble;And the ^bearth will be shaken from its placeAt the wrath of the LORD of hostsIn ^cthe day of His burning anger.14 And like the hunted gazelle,Or like ^asheep that no man gathers,Each foreign resident will turn and go back to his own people,And each one flee to his own land.15 Anyone who is found will be ^apierced through,And anyone who is captured will fall by the sword.16 Their ^achildren also will be smashed to piecesBefore their eyes;Their houses will be lootedAnd their wives ravished.

Babylon Will Fall to the Medes

17 Listen carefully, I will ^aput the Medes in motion against them,Who have no regard for silver and do not ^bdelight in gold and therefore cannot be bribed.18 Their bows will cut down the ^ayoung men of Babylon;They will take no pity on the fruit of the womb,Their ^beyes will not look with compassion on the children.19 And ^aBabylon, the glory of kingdoms, the ^bbeauty of the ¹Chaldeans’ pride,Will be like Sodom and Gomorrah when God ^coverthrew them.20 Babylon will ^anever be inhabited or lived in from generation to generation;Nor will the ^bArab pitch his tent there,Nor will the shepherds let their sheep lie down there.21 But ^adesert creatures will lie down there,And their houses will be full of owls;Ostriches also will live there, and ¹wild goats will dance there.22 ¹Hyenas will howl in their castles,And jackals in their luxurious ^apalaces.Babylon’s time has nearly come,And her days will not be prolonged.

6 Wail, for the ^aday of the LORD is near!It will come as ^bdestruction from ¹the Almighty.7 Therefore ^aall hands will fall limp,And every human ^bheart will melt.8 They will be ^aterrified,Pains and anguish will take hold of them;They will ^bwrithe like a woman in labor,They will look at one another in astonishment,Their faces aflame.9 Behold, ^athe day of the LORD is coming,Cruel, with fury and burning anger,To make the land a desolation;And He will exterminate its sinners from it.10 For the ^astars of heaven and their constellationsWill not flash their light;The ^bsun will be dark when it risesAnd the moon will not shed its light.11 So I will ^apunish the world for its evilAnd the ^bwicked for their wrongdoing;I will also put an end to the ^caudacity of the proudAnd humiliate the ^darrogance of the ¹^etyrants.12 I will make mortal man ^ascarcer than pure goldAnd mankind than the ^bgold of Ophir.13 Therefore I will make the ^aheavens tremble,And ^bthe earth will be shaken from its placeAt the fury of the LORD of armiesIn ^cthe day of His burning anger.14 And it will be that, like a hunted gazelle,Or like ^asheep with no one to gather them,Each of them will turn to his own people,And each of them will flee to his own land.15 Anyone who is found will be ^athrust through,And anyone who is captured will fall by the sword.16 Their ^alittle ones also will be dashed to piecesBefore their eyes;Their houses will be plunderedAnd their wives raped.

Babylon Will Fall to the Medes

17 Behold, I am going to ^astir up the Medes against them,Who will not value silver or ^btake pleasure in gold.18 And their bows will ¹mow down the ^ayoung men,They will not even have compassion on the fruit of the womb,Nor will their ^beye pity ²children.19 And ^aBabylon, the ^bbeauty of kingdoms, the glory of the Chaldeans’ pride,Will be as when God ^coverthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.20 It will ^anever be inhabited or lived in from generation to generation;Nor will the ^bArab pitch his tent there,Nor will shepherds allow their flocks to lie down there.21 But ^adesert creatures will lie down there,And their houses will be full of ¹owls;Ostriches also will live there, and ²shaggy goats will frolic there.22 ¹Hyenas will howl in their fortified towersAnd jackals in their luxurious ^apalaces.Her fateful time also ²will soon come,And her days will not be prolonged.
