Then Boaz went up to the city gate where business and legal matters were settled and sat down, and then ^athe close relative (redeemer) of whom Boaz had spoken came by. He said to him, “Come over here, ¹friend, and sit down.” So he came and sat down. 2 Then Boaz took ten men from the ^aelders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” And they sat down. 3 He said to the closest relative (redeemer) , “Naomi, who has returned from the country of Moab, must sell the plot of land ^awhich belonged to our brother Elimelech. 4 So I thought to let you hear of it, saying, ‘^aBuy it in the presence of those sitting here, and before the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, redeem it; but if not, then tell me, so that I may know; for ^bthere is no one besides you to redeem it, and I am next of kin after you.’” And he said, “I will redeem it.” 5 Then Boaz said, “The day that you buy the field from Naomi, you must also acquire Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of the deceased, ^ato restore the name of the deceased to his inheritance.” 6 ^aThe closest relative (redeemer) said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, because by marrying a Moabitess I would ¹jeopardize my own inheritance. Take my right of redemption (purchase) yourself, because I cannot redeem it.” Deut 23:3, 4

7 Now formerly in Israel this was ^athe custom concerning redeeming and exchanging property. To confirm a transaction, a man pulled off his sandal and gave it to the other. This was the way of confirming and attesting in Israel. 8 So, when the closest relative (redeemer) said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself,” he pulled off his sandal and gave it to Boaz to confirm the agreement. 9 Then Boaz said to the elders and to all the people, “You are witnesses this day that I have bought everything that was Elimelech’s and everything that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s from the hand of Naomi. 10 I have also acquired Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, to be my wife to restore the name of the deceased to his inheritance, so ^athat the name of the deceased will not be cut off from his brothers or from the gate of his birthplace. You are witnesses today.” 11 All the people at the gate and the elders said, “We are witnesses. May the LORD make the woman who is coming into your house ^alike Rachel and Leah, the two who built the household of Israel. May you achieve wealth and power in Ephrathah and become famous in Bethlehem. 12 Further, may your house be like the house of ^aPerez whom Tamar bore to Judah, because of the offspring which the LORD will give you by this young woman.”

13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. And he went in to her, and ^athe LORD enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son. 14 Then the ^awomen said to Naomi, “Blessed is the LORD who has not left you without a redeemer (grandson, as heir) today, and may his name become famous in Israel. 15 May he also be to you one who restores life and sustains your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you and ^ais better to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.”

16 Then Naomi took the child and placed him in her lap, and she became his nurse. 17 The neighbor women gave him a name, saying, “A son (grandson) has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed (worshiper) . He is the father of Jesse, the father of David the ancestor of Jesus Christ.

18 Now these are the descendants of Perez: ^aPerez was the father of Hezron, 19 Hezron was the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab, 20 Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, 21 Salmon the father of Boaz, Boaz the father of Obed, 22 Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David the king of Israel and the ancestor of Jesus Christ.

Redeem it for yourself; you may have my right of redemption, since I cannot redeem it.”

7 Now this was ^athe custom in former times in Israel concerning the redemption and the exchange of land to confirm any matter: a man removed his sandal and gave it to another; and this was the way of confirmation in Israel. 8 So the redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself.” And he removed his sandal. 9 Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses today that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and Mahlon. 10 Furthermore, I have acquired Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, to be my wife in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance, so ^athat the name of the deceased will not be eliminated from his brothers or from the ¹court of his birth place; you are witnesses today.” 11 And all the people who were ¹in the court, and the elders, said, “We are witnesses. May the LORD make the woman who is coming into your home ^alike Rachel and Leah, both of whom built the house of Israel; and may you achieve ²wealth in Ephrathah and ³become famous in Bethlehem. 12 Moreover, may your house be like the house of ^aPerez whom Tamar bore to Judah, through the ¹descendants whom the LORD will give you by this young woman.”

13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife, and he had relations with her. And ^athe LORD ¹enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son. 14 Then the ^awomen said to Naomi, “Blessed is the LORD who has not left you without a redeemer today, and may his name ¹become famous in Israel. 15 May he also be to you one who restores life and sustains your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you ^1aand is better to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.”

16 Then Naomi took the child and ¹laid him in her lap, and became his nurse. 17 And the neighbor women gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi!” So they named him Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

18 Now these are the generations of Perez: ^aPerez fathered Hezron, 19 Hezron fathered Ram, and Ram fathered Amminadab, 20 and Amminadab fathered Nahshon, and Nahshon fathered Salmon, 21 and Salmon fathered Boaz, and Boaz fathered Obed, 22 and Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David.

If you will redeem it, redeem it; but if no one redeems it, tell me that I may know; for ^bthere is no one but you to redeem it, and I am after you.’” And he said, “I will redeem it.” 5 Then Boaz said, “On the day you acquire the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also ¹acquire Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of the one who had died, in order ^ato raise up the name of the one who had died, on behalf of his inheritance.” 6 ^aSo the kinsman redeemer said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I ruin my own inheritance. You redeem my right of redemption for yourself, for I cannot redeem it.”

7 Now this was ^athe custom in former times in Israel concerning the right of redemption and the exchange of land to establish any matter: a man removed his sandal and gave it to another; and this was the manner of attestation in Israel. 8 So the kinsman redeemer said to Boaz, “Acquire this for yourself.” And he removed his sandal. 9 Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses today that I have acquired all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and Mahlon from the hand of Naomi. 10 And also, I have acquired Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, to be my wife in order to raise up the name of the one who had died, on behalf of his inheritance, so ^athat the name of the one who had died will not be cut off from his brothers or from the gate of his birth place; you are witnesses today.” 11 And all the people who were in the gate, and the elders, said, “We are witnesses. May Yahweh grant the woman who is coming into your home to be ^alike Rachel and Leah, both of whom built the house of Israel, and so you shall ¹achieve ²excellence in Ephrathah and shall ³proclaim your name in Bethlehem. 12 Moreover, may your house be like the house of ^aPerez whom Tamar bore to Judah, through the seed which Yahweh will grant you by this young woman.”

13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife, and he went in to her. And ^aYahweh granted her conception, and she gave birth to a son. 14 Then the ^awomen said to Naomi, “Blessed is Yahweh who has not left you without a ¹kinsman redeemer today, and may his name ²be proclaimed in Israel. 15 May he also be to you a restorer of your soul and a sustainer of your ¹old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you ^2aand is better to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.”

16 Then Naomi took the child ¹and put him on her bosom and became his nurse. 17 The neighbor women gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi!” So they named him Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.
