Now in Haran ^athe LORD had said to Abram,“Go away from your country,And from your relativesAnd from your father’s house,To the land which I will show you; Heb 11:8-10

4 So Abram departed in faithful obedience as the LORD had directed him; and ^aLot his nephew left with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. 5 Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his nephew, and all their ^apossessions which they had acquired, and the ^bpeople (servants) which they had acquired in Haran, and they set out to go to the land of Canaan. ^cWhen they came to the land of Canaan, 6 Abram passed through the land as far as the site of ^aShechem, to the great terebinth (oak) tree of Moreh. Now the ¹Canaanites were in the land at that time. 7 Then the LORD ^aappeared to Abram and said, “^bI will give this land to your descendants.” So Abram built ^can altar there to honor the LORD who had appeared to him. 8 Then he moved on from there to the mountain on the east of ^aBethel, and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to the LORD and ^bcalled on the name of the LORD in worship through prayer, praise, and thanksgiving. 9 Then Abram journeyed on, continuing toward ^athe Negev (the South country of Judah) .

10 Now there was ^aa famine in the land; and Abram went down into Egypt to live temporarily, for the famine in the land was ^boppressive and severe. 11 And when he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, “Listen: I know that you are ^1aa beautiful woman; 12 ^aso when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife’; and they will kill me to acquire you, but they will let you live. 13 Please tell them that you are ^1amy sister so that things will go well for me for your sake, and ^bmy life will be spared because of you.” 14 And when Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that Sarai was very beautiful. 15 Pharaoh’s princes (officials) also saw her and praised her to Pharaoh; and ^athe woman was taken for the purpose of marriage into Pharaoh’s house (harem) . 16 Therefore ^aPharaoh treated Abram well for her sake; ^bhe acquired sheep, oxen, male and female donkeys, male and female servants, and camels.

17 But the LORD ^apunished Pharaoh and his household with severe plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. 18 Then Pharaoh called Abram and said, “^aWhat is this that you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her as my wife? Now then, here is your wife; take her and go!” 20 So Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they escorted him on his way, with his wife and all that he had.

Now ^athe LORD said to Abram,“Go from your country,And from your relativesAnd from your father’s house,To the land which I will show you;

Now Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5 Abram took his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot, and all their ^apossessions which they had accumulated, and ^bthe ¹people which they had acquired in Haran, and they ²set out for the land of Canaan; ^cso they came to the land of Canaan. 6 Abram passed through the land as far as the site of ^aShechem, to the ¹oak of Moreh. Now the Canaanites were in the land at that time. 7 And the LORD ^aappeared to Abram and said, “^bTo your ¹descendants I will give this land.” So he built ^can altar there to the LORD who had appeared to him. 8 Then he proceeded from there to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent with ^aBethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to the LORD and ^bcalled upon the name of the LORD. 9 Then Abram journeyed on, continuing toward ^athe ¹Negev.

10 Now there was ^aa famine in the land; so Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a time, because the famine was ^bsevere in the land. 11 It came about, when he ¹was approaching Egypt, that he said to his wife Sarai, “See now, I know that you are a ^2abeautiful woman; 12 ^aand when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife’; and they will kill me, but they will let you live. 13 Please say that you are ^amy sister so that it may go well for me because of you, and that ^1bI may live on account of you.” 14 Now it came about, when Abram entered Egypt, that the Egyptians ¹saw that the woman was very beautiful. 15 Pharaoh’s officials saw her and praised her to Pharaoh; and ^athe woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house. 16 Therefore ^ahe treated Abram well for her sake; and ^1bhe gave him sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male servants and female servants, female donkeys, and camels.

17 But the LORD ^astruck Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. 18 Then Pharaoh called Abram and said, “^aWhat is this that you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her for myself as a wife? Now then, ¹here is your wife, take her and go!” 20 And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they ¹escorted him away, with his wife and all that belonged to him.

Now Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5 So Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their ^apossessions which they had accumulated, and ^bthe ¹persons which they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go forth to the land of Canaan; ^cthus they came to the land of Canaan. 6 And Abram passed through the land as far as the site of ^aShechem, to the ¹oak of Moreh. Now the Canaanite was then in the land. 7 Then Yahweh ^aappeared to Abram and said, “^bTo your seed I will give this land.” So he built ^can altar there to Yahweh who had appeared to him. 8 Then he proceeded from there to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with ^aBethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to Yahweh and ^bcalled upon the name of Yahweh. 9 And Abram journeyed on, continuing toward ^athe ¹Negev.

10 Now there was ^aa famine in the land; so Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was ^bsevere in the land. 11 And it happened as he drew near to entering Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, “Now behold, I know that you are a woman ^abeautiful in appearance; 12 ^aand it will be when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, ‘This is his wife’; and they will kill me, but they will let you live. 13 Please say that you are ^amy sister so that it may go well with me because of you, and that ^1bI may live on account of you.” 14 Now it happened when Abram came into Egypt, that the Egyptians ¹saw that the woman was very beautiful. 15 And Pharaoh’s officials saw her and praised her to Pharaoh; and ^athe woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house. 16 Therefore ^ahe treated Abram well because of her; and sheep and oxen and donkeys and male and female servants and female donkeys and camels ^1bcame into his possession.

17 But Yahweh ^astruck Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. 18 Then Pharaoh called Abram and said, “^aWhat is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her for myself as a wife? So now, ¹here is your wife, take her and go.” 20 So Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they ¹sent him away with his wife and all that belonged to him.
