^aPursue this love with eagerness, make it your goal, yet ^bearnestly desire and cultivate the ^cspiritual gifts to be used by believers for the benefit of the church, but especially that you may ^1dprophesy to foretell the future, to speak a new message from God to the people. 2 For one who ^aspeaks in an unknown tongue does not speak to people but to God; for no one understands him or catches his meaning, but by the Spirit he speaks ^bmysteries secret truths, hidden things. 3 But on the other hand the one who prophesies speaks to people for ^aedification to promote their spiritual growth and speaks words of ^bencouragement to uphold and advise them concerning the matters of God and speaks words of consolation to compassionately comfort them. 4 One who ^aspeaks in a tongue ^bedifies himself; but one who ^cprophesies ^dedifies the church promotes growth in spiritual wisdom, devotion, holiness, and joy. 5 Now I wish that all of you ^aspoke in unknown tongues, but even ^bmore I wish that you would prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater and more useful than the one who ^cspeaks in tongues, unless he translates or explains what he says, so that the church may ¹be ^dedified instructed, improved, strengthened.

6 Now, believers, if I come to you speaking in unknown tongues, how will I benefit you unless I also speak to you clearly either by ^arevelation revealing God’s mystery, or by ^bknowledge teaching about God, or by ^cprophecy foretelling the future, speaking a new message from God to the people, or by ^dinstruction teaching precepts that develop spiritual maturity? 7 Yet even lifeless things, whether flute or harp, when producing a sound, if they do not produce distinct musical tones, how will anyone listening know what is piped or played? 8 And if ^athe war bugle produces an indistinct sound, who will prepare himself for battle? 9 So it is with you, if you speak words in an unknown tongue that are not intelligible and clear, how will anyone understand what you are saying? You will be ^atalking into the air wasting your breath! 10 There are, I suppose, a great many kinds of languages in the world unknown to us, and none is lacking in meaning. 11 But if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will appear to be a ^1aforeigner to the one who is speaking since he knows exactly what he is saying, and the one who is speaking will appear to be a foreigner to me. 12 So it is with you, since you are so very eager to have spiritual gifts and manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in ways that will ^abuild up the church spiritually.

13 Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may be gifted to translate or explain what he says. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unproductive because it does not understand what my spirit is praying. 15 ^aThen what am I to do? I will pray with the ¹spirit by the Holy Spirit that is within me and I will pray with the mind using words I understand; I will ^bsing with the spirit by the Holy Spirit that is within me and I will sing with the mind using words I understand. 16 Otherwise if you bless and give thanks to God in the spirit only, how will any outsider or someone who is not gifted in spiritual matters say ^athe “Amen” of agreement to your ^bthanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying? 1+@Chr 16:36; Ps 106:48 17 You are giving thanks well enough in a way that God is glorified, but the other person who does not understand you is not ^aedified and spiritually strengthened since he cannot join in your thanksgiving. 18 I thank God that I speak in unknown tongues more than all of you; 19 nevertheless, in public worship I would rather say five understandable words in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue which others cannot understand.

20 ^aBrothers and sisters, ^bdo not be children immature, childlike in your thinking; ^cbe infants in matters of evil completely innocent and inexperienced, but in your minds be mature adults. 21 It is written in ^athe Law, “^bBY MEN OF STRANGE TONGUES AND BY THE LIPS OF FOREIGNERS I WILL SPEAK TO THIS PEOPLE, AND NOT EVEN THEN WILL THEY LISTEN TO ME,” says the Lord. Is 28:11, 12 22 Therefore, unknown tongues are meant for a supernatural sign, not to believers but to unbelievers who might be receptive; while ^aprophecy foretelling the future, speaking a new message from God to the people is not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 So then, if the whole church gathers together and all of you speak in unknown tongues, and outsiders or those who are not gifted in spiritual matters or unbelievers come in, will they not say that ^ayou are out of your mind? 24 But if all ^aprophesy foretelling the future, speaking a new message from God to the people, and an unbeliever or outsider comes in, he is ^bconvicted of his sins by all, and he is called to account by all because he can understand what is being said; 25 ^athe secrets of his heart are laid bare. And so, ^bfalling on his face, he will worship God, ^cdeclaring that God is really among you.

26 ^aWhat then is the right course, ^bbelievers? When you meet together, ^ceach one has a ^dpsalm, a ^eteaching, a ^frevelation (disclosure of special knowledge) , a ^gtongue, or an ^hinterpretation. Let ⁱeverything be constructive and edifying and done for the good of all the church. 27 If anyone speaks in a ^atongue, it should be limited to two or at the most three, and each one speaking in turn, and one must ^binterpret what is said. 28 But if there is no one to interpret, the one who wishes to speak in a tongue must keep silent in church; let him speak to himself and to God. 29 Let two or three ^aprophets speak as inspired by the Holy Spirit, while the rest ^bpay attention and weigh carefully what is said. 30 But if an inspired revelation is made to another who is seated, then the first one must be silent. 31 For in this way you can all prophesy one by one, so that everyone may be instructed and everyone may be encouraged; 32 for the spirits of prophets are subject to the prophets the prophecy is under the speaker’s control, and he can stop speaking; 33 for God who is the source of their prophesying is not a God of ^aconfusion and disorder but of peace and order.

As is the practice in ^ball the churches of the ^csaints (God’s people) ,

34 the ¹women should ^abe silent in the churches, for they are not authorized to speak, but ^bare to take a subordinate place, as ^cthe Law says. 35 If there is anything they want to learn that is, if they have questions about anything being said or taught, they are to ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a ¹woman to talk in church. 36 Did the word of the Lord originate from you Corinthians, or has it come to you only so that you know best what God requires?

37 ^aIf anyone thinks and claims that he is a prophet a true spokesman for God or ^bspiritually astute filled with and energized by the Holy Spirit, let him recognize that the things which I write to you ^care the Lord’s commandment. 38 If anyone does not recognize this that it is a command of the Lord, he is not recognized by God.

39 Therefore, believers, ^adesire earnestly to ^bprophesy to foretell the future, to speak a new message from God to the people, and do not forbid speaking in unknown tongues. 40 But ^aall things must be done appropriately and in an orderly manner.

^aPursue love, yet ^bdesire earnestly ^cspiritual gifts, but especially that you may ^dprophesy. 2 For one who ^aspeaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one ¹understands, but ²in his spirit he speaks ^bmysteries. 3 But one who prophesies speaks to men for ^aedification and ^bexhortation and consolation. 4 One who ^aspeaks in a tongue ^bedifies himself; but one who ^cprophesies ^dedifies the church. 5 Now I wish that you all ^aspoke in tongues, but ^beven more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who ^cspeaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive ^dedifying.

6 But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of ^arevelation or of ^bknowledge or of ^cprophecy or of ^dteaching? 7 Yet even lifeless things, either flute or harp, in producing a sound, if they do not produce a distinction in the tones, how will it be known what is played on the flute or on the harp? 8 For if ^athe ¹bugle produces an indistinct sound, who will prepare himself for battle? 9 So also you, unless you utter by the tongue speech that is clear, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be ^aspeaking into the air. 10 There are, perhaps, a great many kinds of ¹languages in the world, and no kind is without meaning. 11 If then I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be to the one who speaks a ^1abarbarian, and the one who speaks will be a ²barbarian ³to me. 12 So also you, since you are zealous of ¹spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the ^aedification of the church.

13 Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15 ^aWhat is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will ^bsing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also. 16 Otherwise if you bless ¹in the spirit only, how will the one who fills the place of the ²ungifted say ^athe “Amen” at your ^bgiving of thanks, since he does not know what you are saying? 17 For you are giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not ^aedified. 18 I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all; 19 however, in the church I desire to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.

20 ^aBrethren, ^bdo not be children in your thinking; yet in evil ^cbe infants, but in your thinking be mature. 21 In ^athe Law it is written, “^bBY MEN OF STRANGE TONGUES AND BY THE LIPS OF STRANGERS I WILL SPEAK TO THIS PEOPLE, AND EVEN SO THEY WILL NOT LISTEN TO ME,” says the Lord. 22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but ^aprophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe. 23 Therefore if the whole church assembles together and all speak in tongues, and ¹ungifted men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that ^ayou are mad? 24 But if all ^aprophesy, and an unbeliever or an ¹ungifted man enters, he is ^bconvicted by all, he is called to account by all; 25 ^athe secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so he will ^bfall on his face and worship God, ^cdeclaring that God is certainly among you.

26 ^aWhat is the outcome then, ^bbrethren? When you assemble, ^ceach one has a ^dpsalm, has a ^eteaching, has a ^frevelation, has a ^gtongue, has an ^hinterpretation. Let ⁱall things be done for edification. 27 If anyone speaks in a ^atongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one must ^binterpret; 28 but if there is no interpreter, he must keep silent in the church; and let him speak to himself and to God. 29 Let two or three ^aprophets speak, and let the others ^bpass judgment. 30 But if a revelation is made to another who is seated, the first one must keep silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be exhorted; 32 and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets; 33 for God is not a God of ^aconfusion but of ¹peace, as in ^ball the churches of the ^csaints.

34 The women are to ^akeep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but ^bare to subject themselves, just as ^cthe Law also says. 35 If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is ¹improper for a woman to speak in church. 36 ¹Was it from you that the word of God first went forth? Or has it come to you only?

37 ^aIf anyone thinks he is a prophet or ^bspiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you ^care the Lord’s commandment. 38 But if anyone does not recognize this, he ¹is not recognized.

39 Therefore, my brethren, ^adesire earnestly to ^bprophesy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues. 40 But ^aall things must be done properly and in an orderly manner.
