Then the LORD said to Moses, “^aNow hear this: I make you as God to Pharaoh to declare My will and purpose to him; and your brother Aaron shall be your prophet. 2 You shall speak all that I command you, and your brother ^aAaron shall tell Pharaoh to let the children of Israel go out of his land. 3 And ^aI will make Pharaoh’s heart hard, and ^bmultiply My signs and My wonders (miracles) in the land of Egypt. 4 But ^aPharaoh will not listen to you, and I shall lay My hand on Egypt and ^bbring out My hosts like a defensive army, tribe by tribe, My people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by ^cgreat acts of judgment (the plagues) . 5 ^aThe Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I ^bstretch out My hand on Egypt and bring out the children of Israel from among them.” 6 And Moses and Aaron did so; just ^aas the LORD commanded them, so they did. 7 Now Moses was ^aeighty years old and Aaron eighty-three years old when they spoke to Pharaoh.

8 Now the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, 9 “When Pharaoh says to you, ‘^aWork a miracle to prove your authority,’ then you say to Aaron, ‘^bTake your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh, so that it may become a serpent.’” 10 So Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh, and did just as the LORD had commanded; Aaron threw down his staff before Pharaoh and his servants, and it ^abecame a serpent. 11 Then Pharaoh ^acalled for the wise men skilled in magic and omens and the sorcerers skilled in witchcraft, and they also, these ^bmagicians (soothsayer-priests) of Egypt, did the same with ^ctheir secret arts and enchantments. 12 For every ¹man threw down his staff and they turned into serpents; but Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. 13 Yet ^aPharaoh’s heart was hardened and he would not listen to them, just as the LORD had said.

14 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is hard; he refuses to let the people go. 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning ^aas he is going out to the water, and wait for him on the bank of the Nile; and you shall take in your hand ^bthe staff that was turned into a serpent. 16 You shall ^asay to him, ‘The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to you, saying, “^bLet My people go, so that they may serve Me in the wilderness. But behold, you have not listened until now.” 17 Thus says the LORD, “^aBy this you shall know and recognize and acknowledge that I am the LORD: look, with the staff in my hand I will strike the water in the Nile, and ^bit shall be turned to blood. 18 ^aThe fish in the Nile will die, and the Nile will become foul, and the Egyptians will ^bnot be able to drink water from the Nile.”’” 19 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and ^astretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their rivers, over their streams, over their pools, and over all their reservoirs of water, so that they may become blood; and there shall be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, in containers both of wood and of stone.’”

20 So Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded; Aaron lifted up ^athe staff and struck the waters in the Nile, in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants, and ^ball the water that was in the Nile was turned into blood. 21 The fish in the Nile died, and the river became foul smelling, and the Egyptians could not drink its water, and there was blood throughout ¹all the land of Egypt. 22 ^aBut the magicians of Egypt did the ¹same by their secret arts and enchantments; so Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had said. 23 Then Pharaoh turned and went into his house, and he did not take even this divine sign to heart. 24 So all the Egyptians dug near the river for water to drink, because they could not drink the water of the Nile. 25 Seven days passed after the LORD had struck the Nile.

But behold, you have not listened until now.” 17 Thus says the LORD, “^aBy this you shall know that I am the LORD: behold, I will strike ¹the water that is in the Nile with the staff that is in my hand, and ^bit will be turned to blood. 18 ^aThe fish that are in the Nile will die, and the Nile will ¹become foul, and the Egyptians will ^2bfind difficulty in drinking water from the Nile.”’” 19 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and ^astretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their rivers, over their ¹streams, and over their pools, and over all their reservoirs of water, that they may become blood; and there will be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in vessels of wood and in vessels of stone.’”

20 So Moses and Aaron did even as the LORD had commanded. And he lifted up ^1athe staff and struck the water that was in the Nile, in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants, and ^ball the water that was in the Nile was turned to blood. 21 The fish that were in the Nile died, and the Nile ¹became foul, so that the Egyptians could not drink water from the Nile. And the blood was through all the land of Egypt. 22 ^aBut the ¹magicians of Egypt did ²the same with their secret arts; and Pharaoh’s heart was ³hardened, and he did not listen to them, as the LORD had said. 23 Then Pharaoh turned and went into his house ¹with no concern even for this. 24 So all the Egyptians dug around the Nile for water to drink, for they could not drink of the water of the Nile. 25 Seven days ¹passed after the LORD had struck the Nile.

Then Yahweh said to Moses, “^aSee, I ¹set you as God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron shall be your prophet. 2 You shall speak all that I command you, and your brother ^aAaron shall speak to Pharaoh that he let the sons of Israel go out of his land. 3 But ^aI will harden Pharaoh’s heart with stiffness that I may ^bmultiply My signs and My ¹wonders in the land of Egypt. 4 But ^aPharaoh will not listen to you. And I will ¹set My hand upon Egypt and ^bbring out My hosts, My people the sons of Israel, from the land of Egypt by ^cgreat judgments. 5 ^aThen the Egyptians shall know that I am Yahweh, when I ^bstretch out My hand against Egypt and bring out the sons of Israel from their midst.” 6 So Moses and Aaron did it; ^aas Yahweh commanded them, thus they did. 7 Now Moses was ^aeighty years old and Aaron eighty-three years old, when they spoke to Pharaoh.

8 And Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, 9 “When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, ‘^1aWork a miraculous wonder,’ then you shall say to Aaron, ‘^bTake your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh, that it may become a ²serpent.’” 10 So Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh, and thus they did just as Yahweh had commanded; and Aaron threw his staff down before Pharaoh and ¹his ²servants, and it ^abecame a ³serpent. 11 Then Pharaoh also ^acalled for the wise men and the sorcerers, and they also, the ^1bmagicians of Egypt, did ²the same with ^ctheir secret arts. 12 And each one threw down his staff, and they became ¹serpents. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. 13 Yet ^aPharaoh’s heart was ¹hardened with strength, and he did not listen to them, as Yahweh had spoken.

14 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is ¹hard with firmness; he refuses to let the people go. 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning ¹as ^ahe is going out to the water, and station yourself to meet him on the bank of the Nile; and you shall take in your hand ^bthe staff that was turned into a serpent. 16 ^aAnd you shall say to him, ‘Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, sent me to you, saying, “^bLet My people go, that they may serve Me in the wilderness. But behold, you have not listened until now.” 17 Thus says Yahweh, “^aBy this you shall know that I am Yahweh: behold, I am about to strike ¹the water that is in the Nile with the staff that is in my hand, and ^bit will be turned to blood. 18 ^aAnd the fish that are in the Nile will die, and the Nile will ¹become foul, and the Egyptians will ^bbe weary of drinking water from the Nile.”’” 19 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and ^astretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their rivers, over their ¹streams, and over their pools and over all their reservoirs of water, that they may become blood; and there will be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in vessels of wood and in vessels of stone.’”

20 So Moses and Aaron did thus, as Yahweh had commanded. And he raised up ^1athe staff and struck the water that was in the Nile, in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants, and ^ball the water that was in the Nile was turned to blood. 21 And the fish that were in the Nile died, and the Nile ¹became foul, so that the Egyptians could not drink water from the Nile. And the blood was through all the land of Egypt. 22 ^aYet the ¹magicians of Egypt did ²the same with their secret arts; and Pharaoh’s heart was ³hardened with strength, and he did not listen to them, as Yahweh had spoken. 23 Then Pharaoh turned and went into his house, and he did not set his heart even on this. 24 So all the Egyptians dug around the Nile for water to drink, for they could not drink of the water of the Nile. 25 And seven full days ¹passed after Yahweh had struck the Nile.

But Aaron’s staff swallowed their staffs. 13 Yet ^aPharaoh’s heart was ¹hardened, and he did not listen to them, just as the LORD had said.

But behold, you have not listened up to now.” 17 This is what the LORD says: “^aBy this you shall know that I am the LORD: behold, I am going to strike ¹the water that is in the Nile with the staff that is in my hand, and ^bit will be turned into blood. 18 Then ^athe fish that are in the Nile will die, the Nile will stink, and the Egyptians will ^1bno longer be able to drink water from the Nile.”’” 19 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and ^aextend your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their rivers, over their ¹streams, over their pools, and over all their reservoirs of water, so that they may become blood; and there will be blood through all the land of Egypt, both in containers of wood and in containers of stone.’”
