God’s Anger over Israel

How the Lord has ^acovered the Daughter of Zion (Jerusalem)With a cloud in His anger!He has ^bcast down from heaven to the earthThe ^cglory and splendor of IsraelAnd has not remembered His ^dfootstoolIn the day of His anger.2 The Lord has ^aswallowed up; He has not sparedAll the country places of Jacob.In His wrath He has ^bthrown downThe strongholds of the Daughter of Judah (Jerusalem) .He has ^cbrought them down to the ground in disgrace;He has ^ddebased the kingdom and its princes.3 In fierce anger He has cut off and destroyedEvery ¹^ahorn of Israel.He has ^bwithdrawn His right handFrom the presence of the enemy.And He has ^cburned in Jacob like a flaming fireConsuming all around.4 He has bent His ^abow like an enemy;He has set His right hand like an adversaryAnd slain all that were ^bdelightful and pleasing to the eye;In the tent of the Daughter of ZionHe has ^cpoured out His wrath like fire.5 The Lord has become like an ^aenemy;He has ^bswallowed up Israel.He has swallowed up all its ^cpalaces;He has destroyed its strongholdsAnd ^dmultiplied in the Daughter of JudahMourning and lamentation (expressions of grief) .6 And He has violently broken down His temple like a fragile garden hedge;He has ^adestroyed His appointed meeting place.The LORD has ^bcaused the appointed feast and SabbathTo be forgotten in ZionAnd has ^cdespised and rejected the king and the priestIn the indignation of His anger.7 The Lord has ^arejected His altar;He has abandoned His sanctuary.He ^bhas given into the hand of the enemyThe walls of her palaces;They have made a ^cnoise in the house of the LORDAs on a day of an appointed feast.8 The LORD determined to lay in ruinsThe city wall of the Daughter of Zion.He has ^astretched out a line,He has not stopped His hand from destroying.He ^bhas caused the rampart and the wall to lament (mourn in grief) ;They have languished together.9 Her ^agates have sunk into the ground;He has destroyed and broken her bars.Her king and her princes are exiled among the nations;The ^blaw is no more.Also, her prophets no longer find^cVision from the LORD.10 The elders of the Daughter of Zion^aSit on the ground ^bkeeping silent;They have thrown ^cdust on their heads,They have covered themselves with ^dsackcloth.The ^evirgins of JerusalemHave bowed their heads to the ground.11 My ^aeyes fail because of tears mourns Jeremiah,My ^bspirit is deeply disturbed;My ^cheart is poured out on the earth in grief^dBecause of the destruction of the daughter of my people Jerusalem,When ^elittle ones and infants faintIn the streets of the city.12 They cry to their mothers,“^aWhere is grain and wine?”As they faint like a wounded manIn the streets of the city,As their ^blife slips away and is poured outIn their mothers’ arms.13 How shall I console you?To what ^ashall I compare you,O Daughter of Jerusalem?With what shall I compare you, so that I may comfort you,O ^bVirgin Daughter of Zion?For your ruin is as vast as the sea;Who can ^cheal you? Lam 1:12; Dan 9:1214 Your ^aprophets have seen (imagined) for youFalse and foolish visions;And they have not ^bexposed your wickednessTo restore you from captivity by teaching you to repent,But they have ^cseen (imagined) and declared to you false and misleading oracles.15 All who pass along the way^aClap their hands in derision at you;They ^bscoff and shake their headsAt the Daughter of Jerusalem, saying,“Is this the city that was called‘^cThe perfection of beauty,The ^djoy of all the earth’?”16 All ^ayour enemiesHave opened their mouths wide against you;They scornfully hiss and ^bgnash their teeth.They say, “We have ^cswallowed her up!Certainly this is the ^dday for which we waited;We have reached it, we have seen it!”17 The LORD has ^adone what He planned;He has accomplished His wordWhich He commanded ¹from days of old.He has demolished ^bwithout sparing,And He has caused the enemy to ^crejoice over you;He has ^dexalted the power of your enemies. Lev 26:14-39; Deut 28:15-6818 Their ^ahearts cried out to the Lord.“O ^bwall of the Daughter of Zion,Let your ^ctears run down like a river day and night;Give yourself no relief,Let your eyes have no rest.19 “Arise, cry aloud in the ^anight,At the beginning of the night watches;^bPour out your heart like waterBefore the presence of the Lord;Lift up your hands to HimFor the ^clife of your little onesWho are ^dfaint from hungerAt the head of every street.” Ps 62:820 See, O LORD, and look!With ^awhom have You dealt this way?Should women ^beat their offspring,The little ones who were born healthy and beautiful?Should ^cpriest and prophet be killedIn the sanctuary of the Lord?21 The ^ayoung and the oldLie on the ground in the streets;My ^bvirgins and my young menHave fallen by the sword.You have killed them in the day of Your anger,You have slaughtered, ^cnot sparing.22 You LORD called as in the day of an appointed feastMy ^aterrors (dangers) on every side;And there was ^bno one who escaped or survivedIn the day of the LORD’S anger.^cThose I have cared for and brought up with tenderness,My enemy annihilated them.

The Anger of Yahweh

How the Lord has ^acovered the daughter of ZionWith a cloud in His anger!He has ^bcast from heaven to earthThe ^cbeauty of Israel,And has not remembered the ^dfootstool of His feetIn the day of His anger.

ב — Beth

2 The Lord has ^aswallowed up; He has not sparedAll the habitations of Jacob.In His wrath He has ^bpulled downThe strongholds of the daughter of Judah;He has ^cbrought them down to the ground;He has ^dprofaned the kingdom and its princes.

ג — Gimel

3 In ¹hot anger He has cut in pieces²All the ^astrength of Israel;He has ^bturned back His right handFrom before the enemy.And He has ^cburned in Jacob like a flaming fireDevouring round about.

ד — Daleth

4 He has bent His ^abow like an enemy;He has set His right hand like an adversaryAnd killed all that were ^bdesirable to the eye;In the tent of the daughter of ZionHe has ^cpoured out His wrath like fire.

ה — He

5 The Lord has become like an ^aenemy.He has ^bswallowed up Israel;He has swallowed up all its ^cpalaces;He has brought its strongholds to ruinAnd ^dmultiplied in the daughter of JudahMourning and moaning.

ו — Vav

6 And He has violently treated His ¹tabernacle like a garden booth;He has ^abrought His appointed ²meeting place to ruin.Yahweh has ^bcaused to be forgottenThe appointed time and sabbath in Zion,And He has ^cspurned king and priestIn the indignation of His anger.

ז — Zayin

7 The Lord has ^arejected His altar;He has abandoned His sanctuary;He ^bhas delivered into the hand of the enemyThe walls of her palaces.They have made a ^cnoise in the house of YahwehAs in the day of an appointed time.

ח — Heth

8 Yahweh ¹determined to bring to ruinThe wall of the daughter of Zion.He has ^astretched out a line;He has not turned His hand back from swallowing up,And He has ^bcaused rampart and wall to mourn;They have languished together.

ט — Teth

9 Her ^agates have sunk into the ground;He has destroyed and broken her bars.Her king and her princes are among the nations;The ^blaw is no more.Also, her prophets find^cNo vision from Yahweh.

י — Yodh

10 The elders of the daughter of Zion^aSit on the ground; they ^bare silent.They have thrown ^cdust up on their heads;They have girded themselves with ^dsackcloth.The ^evirgins of JerusalemHave bowed their heads down to the ground.

כ — Kaph

11 My ^aeyes fail because of tears;My ¹^binmost being is greatly disturbed;My ²^cheart is poured out on the earth^dBecause of the ³destruction of the daughter of my people,When ^einfants and nursing babies faintIn the open squares of the city.

ל — Lamedh

12 They say to their mothers,“^aWhere is grain and wine?”As they faint like a wounded manIn the open squares of the city,As their ^blife is poured outOn their mothers’ bosom.

מ — Mem

13 What shall I testify about you?To what ^ashall I equate you,O daughter of Jerusalem?To what shall I liken you as I comfort you,O ^bvirgin daughter of Zion?For your ¹destruction is as vast as the sea;Who can ^cheal you?

נ — Nun

14 Your ^aprophets have beheld for youWorthless and ineffective visions;And they have not ^buncovered your iniquitySo as to ¹return you from captivity,But they have ^cbeheld for you worthless and misleading ²oracles.

ס — Samekh

15 All who pass along the way^aClap their hands in derision at you;They ^bhiss and shake their headsAt the daughter of Jerusalem,“Is this the city of which they said,‘^cThe perfection of beauty,^dThe joy of the whole earth’?”

16 All ^ayour enemiesHave opened their mouths wide against you;They hiss and ^bgnash their teeth.They say, “We have ^cswallowed her up!Surely this is the ^dday for which we have hoped;We have found it, we have seen it.”

ע — Ayin

17 Yahweh has ^adone what He purposed;He has completed His wordWhich He commanded from days of old.He has pulled down ^bwithout sparing,And He has caused the enemy to ^cbe glad over you;He has ^dexalted the ¹might of your adversaries.

צ — Tsadhe

18 Their ^aheart cried out to the Lord,“O ^bwall of the daughter of Zion,Let your ^ctears run down like a river day and night;Give yourself no relief;Let ¹your eyes not be still.

ק — Qoph

19 “Arise, cry aloud in the ^anightAt the head of the night watches;^bPour out your heart like waterBefore the presence of the Lord;Lift up your hands to HimFor the ^clife of your infantsWho are ^dfaint because of hungerAt the head of every street.”

20 See, O Yahweh, and look!With ^awhom have You dealt thus?Should women ^beat their ¹offspring,The infants who were ²born healthy?Should ^cpriest and prophet be killedIn the sanctuary of the Lord?

21 On the ground in the streetsLie ^ayoung and old;My ^bvirgins and my young menHave fallen by the sword.You have killed them in the day of Your anger;You have slaughtered, ^cnot sparing.

22 You called as in the day of an appointed timeMy ^aterrors on every side;And there was ^bno one who escaped or survivedIn the day of Yahweh’s anger.Those ^cwhom I ¹gave birth to and reared,My enemy consumed them.
