Then after a period of fourteen years I aagain went up to Jerusalem, this time with bBarnabas, taking cTitus along also.Acts 15:2Acts 4:36; Gal 2:9, 132 Cor 2:13; Gal 2:3 2 I went up to Jerusalem because of a divine arevelation, and I put before them the bgospel which I preach among the Gentiles. But I did so in private before those of 1reputation, for fear that I might be crunning or had run the course of my ministry in vain. This group would have included the apostles Peter and John, as well as James, Jesus’ half-brother who was also the leader of the Jerusalem church.Acts 15:2; Gal 1:12Gal 1:6Rom 9:16; 1 Cor 9:24ff; Gal 5:7; Phil 2:16; 2 Tim 4:7; Heb 12:1 3 But all went well, for not even aTitus, who was with me, was bcompelled as some had anticipated to be circumcised, despite the fact that he was a Greek.2 Cor 2:13; Gal 2:1Acts 16:3; 1 Cor 9:21 4 My concern was because of the 1afalse brothers those people masquerading as Christians who had been secretly smuggled in to the community of believers. They bhad slipped in to spy on cthe freedom which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to dbring us back into bondage under the Law of Moses.I.e. the Judaizers (see note 1:7).Acts 15:1, 24; 2 Cor 11:13, 26; Gal 1:72 Pet 2:1; Jude 4Gal 5:1, 13; James 1:25Rom 8:15; 2 Cor 11:20 5 But we did not yield to them even for a moment, so that athe truth of the gospel would continue to remain with you in its purity.Gal 1:6; 2:14; Col 1:5 6 But from those who were of high areputation (whatever they were—in terms of individual importance—makes no difference to me; bGod shows no partiality—He is not impressed with the positions that people hold nor does He recognize distinctions such as fame or power)—well, those who were of reputation contributed nothing to me that is, they had nothing to add to my gospel message nor did they impose any new requirements on me. Deut 10:172 Cor 11:5; 12:11; Gal 2:9; 6:3Acts 10:34 7 But on the contrary, they saw that I had been aentrusted with the bgospel to the uncircumcised , just as cPeter had been entrusted to proclaim the gospel to the circumcised ;1 Cor 9:17; 1 Thess 2:4; 1 Tim 1:11Acts 9:15; Gal 1:16Gal 1:18; 2:9, 11, 14 8 (for He who worked effectively for Peter and empowered him in his aministry to the Jews also worked effectively for me and empowered me in my ministry to the Gentiles).Acts 1:25 9 And recognizing athe grace that God had bestowed on me, bJames and cCephas and John, who were dreputed to be epillars of the Jerusalem church, gave to me and fBarnabas the 1gright hand of fellowship, so that we could hgo to the Gentiles with their blessing and they to the circumcised .A solemn act of partnership signifying acceptance, agreement and trust.Rom 12:3Acts 12:17; Gal 2:12Luke 22:8; Gal 1:18; 2:7, 11, 142 Cor 11:5; 12:11; Gal 2:2, 6; 6:31 Tim 3:15; Rev 3:12Acts 4:36; Gal 2:1, 132 Kin 10:15Gal 1:16 10 They asked only one thing, that we remember the poor, athe very thing I was also eager to do.Acts 24:17
11 Now when aCephas came to bAntioch, I opposed him face to face about his conduct there, because he stood condemned by his own actions.Gal 1:18; 2:7, 9, 14Acts 11:19; 15:1 12 Before certain men came from aJames, he used to beat his meals with the Gentiles; but when the men from Jerusalem arrived, he began to withdraw and separate himself from the Gentile believers, cbecause he was afraid of those from the 1circumcision.I.e. self-righteous Jewish converts who twisted the gospel to suit their legalistic beliefs, observed Mosaic Law, and would not eat with Gentile believers.Acts 12:17; Gal 2:9Acts 11:3Acts 11:2 13 The rest of the Jews joined him in this hypocrisy ignoring their knowledge that Jewish and Gentile Christians were united, under the new covenant, into one faith, with the result that even aBarnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy.Acts 4:36; Gal 2:1, 9 14 But when I saw that they awere not being straightforward about bthe truth of the gospel, I told cCephas in front of everyone, “If you, being a Jew, dlive as you have been living like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how is it that you are now virtually forcing the Gentiles to live like Jews if they want to eat with you?”Heb 12:13Gal 1:6; 2:5; Col 1:5Gal 1:18; 2:7, 9, 11Acts 10:28; Gal 2:12
15 I went on to say “We are aJews by birth and not bsinners from among the Gentiles;Phil 3:4f1 Sam 15:18; Luke 24:7 16 yet we know that aa man is not 1justified and placed in right standing with God by works of the Law, but only through faith in God’s beloved Son, Christ Jesus. And even we as Jews have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by bfaith in Christ and not by works of the Law. cBy observing the Law no one will ever be justified declared free of the guilt of sin and its penalty. Ps 143:2Being justified is a legal or judicial declaration of righteousness. Justification has two parts: (1) Being declared free of blame, acquitted of sin—not guilty. Believers are justified because Jesus Christ personally assumed the guilt for our sin on the cross; (2) God declares the person righteous, that is, placed in a position of right-standing with Him. A person may not be made righteous by his personal behavior, no matter how good, or by the declaration of any other human being.Acts 13:39; Gal 3:11Rom 3:22; 9:30Ps 143:2; Rom 3:20 17 But if, while we seek to be justified in Christ by faith, we ourselves are found to be asinners, does that make Christ an advocate or promoter of our sin? bCertainly not!Gal 2:15Luke 20:16; Gal 3:21 18 For if I or anyone else should rebuild through word or by practice what I once tore down the belief that observing the Law is essential for salvation, I aprove myself to be a transgressor.Rom 3:5 19 For through the Law I adied to the Law and its demands on me because salvation is provided through the death and resurrection of Christ, so that I might from now on live to God.Rom 6:2; 7:4; 1 Cor 9:20 20 I have been acrucified with Christ that is, in Him I have shared His crucifixion; it is no longer I who live, but bChrist lives in me. The life I now live in the body I live by faith by adhering to, relying on, and completely trusting in cthe Son of God, who dloved me and egave Himself up for me.Rom 6:6; Gal 5:24; 6:14Rom 8:10Matt 4:3Rom 8:37Gal 1:4 21 I do not ignore or nullify the gracious gift of the grace of God His amazing, unmerited favor, for aif righteousness comes through observing the Law, then Christ died needlessly. His suffering and death would have had no purpose whatsoever.”Gal 3:21
