Now ^athe ¹Angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to ^bBochim. And he said, “^cI brought you up from Egypt and led you to the land which I swore to give to your fathers; and I said, ‘^dI will never break My covenant with you, Ex 20:2; 23:32 2 and as for you, ^ayou shall not make a covenant with the inhabitants of this land; ^byou shall tear down their altars.’ But you have not ¹obeyed Me; what is this that you have done? 3 So I also said, ‘^aI will not drive your enemies out before you; but they will be ^blike thorns in your sides and their gods will be a snare to you.’” 4 When the Angel of the LORD had spoken these words to all the Israelites, the people raised their voices and wept. 5 So they named that place Bochim (weepers) ; and there they offered sacrifices to the LORD.

6 And ^awhen Joshua had sent the people away, the tribes of the Israelites went each to his inheritance, to take possession of the land. 7 The people served the LORD all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of the LORD which He had done for Israel. 8 Then Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of a hundred and ten. 9 And they buried him in the territory of ^ahis inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. 10 Also, all the people of that generation were gathered to their fathers in death; and another generation arose after them who ^adid not know (recognize, understand) the LORD, nor even the work which He had done for Israel.

11 Then the Israelites did ^aevil in the sight of the LORD and worshiped and served the ^bBaals, 12 and ^athey abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt. They followed other gods from the gods of the peoples who were around them, and they bowed down to them, and offended and provoked the LORD to anger. 13 So they abandoned the LORD and ^aserved Baal the pagan god of the Canaanites and the ¹Ashtaroth. 14 So ^athe anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He gave them into the hands (power) of plunderers who robbed them; and ^bHe sold them into the hands of their surrounding enemies, so that they could no longer stand in opposition before their enemies. 15 Wherever they went, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil (misfortune) , as the LORD had spoken, and ^aas the LORD had sworn to them, so that they were severely distressed. Lev 26:14-46

16 ^aThen the LORD raised up ¹judges who rescued them from the hands of those who robbed them. 17 Yet they did not listen to their judges, for they played the prostitute after other gods and they bowed down to them. They quickly turned aside from the way ^ain which their fathers had walked in obeying the commandments of the LORD; they did not do as their fathers. 18 When the LORD raised up judges for them, ^aHe was with the judge and He rescued them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the LORD was ^bmoved to pity by their groaning because of those who oppressed and afflicted them. 19 But when the judge died, they turned back and behaved more corruptly than their fathers, in following and serving other gods, and bowing down to them. They did not ¹abandon their practices or their stubborn ways. 20 ^aSo the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He said, “Because this ¹nation has transgressed (violated) My covenant (binding agreement) which I commanded their fathers, and has not listened to My voice, 21 ^aI also will no longer drive out before them any of the nations which Joshua left to be conquered when he died, 22 in order to ^atest the loyalty of Israel by them, whether Israel will keep the way of the LORD to walk in it, as their fathers did, or not.” 23 So the LORD allowed those nations to remain, not driving them out at once; and He did not give them into the hand of Joshua.

11 Then the sons of Israel did ^awhat was evil in the eyes of Yahweh and ¹served the ^bBaals, 12 and ^athey forsook Yahweh, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods from among the gods of the peoples who were around them and bowed themselves down to them; thus they provoked Yahweh to anger. 13 So they forsook Yahweh and ^aserved Baal and the Ashtaroth. 14 ^aAnd the anger of Yahweh burned against Israel, and He gave them into the hands of plunderers who plundered them; and ^bHe sold them into the hands of their enemies around them, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies. 15 Wherever they went, the hand of Yahweh was against them for evil, as Yahweh had spoken and ^aas Yahweh had sworn to them, so that they were severely distressed.

They turned aside quickly from the way ^ain which their fathers had walked in obeying the commandments of Yahweh; they did not do as their fathers. 18 Now when Yahweh raised up judges for them, ^aYahweh was with the judge and saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for Yahweh was ^bmoved to pity by their groaning because of those who oppressed and suppressed them. 19 But it happened when the judge died, that they would turn back and act more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them and bow down to them; they did not abandon their practices or their stubborn ways. 20 ^aSo the anger of Yahweh burned against Israel, and He said, “Because this nation has trespassed against My covenant which I commanded their fathers and has not listened to My voice, 21 ^aI also will no longer dispossess before them any of the nations which Joshua left when he died, 22 in order to ^atest Israel by them, whether they will keep the way of Yahweh to walk in it as their fathers ¹did, or not.” 23 So Yahweh allowed those nations to rest, not dispossessing them quickly; and He did not give them into the hand of Joshua.

They turned aside quickly from the way ^ain which their fathers had walked in obeying the commandments of the LORD; they did not do the same as their fathers. 18 And when the LORD raised up judges for them, ^athe LORD was with the judge and saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the LORD was ^bmoved to pity by their groaning because of those who tormented and oppressed them. 19 But it came about, when the judge died, that they would turn back and act more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them and bow down to them; they did not abandon their practices or their obstinate ways. 20 ^aSo the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He said, “Because this nation has violated My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not listened to My voice, 21 ^aI in turn will no longer drive out from them any of the nations which Joshua left when he died, 22 in order to ^atest Israel by them, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk in it as their fathers ¹did, or not.” 23 So the LORD allowed those nations to remain, not driving them out quickly; and He did not hand them over to Joshua.
