The People’s Apostasy Rebuked

Hear this and pay close attention, O priests!Give heed, O house of Israel!Listen, O house of the king!For the pronounced judgment pertains to you and is meant for you to hear,Because you have been a ^asnare at MizpahAnd a net spread out over Tabor (military strongholds on either side of the Jordan River) .2 The ^arevolters have ^bgone deep into depravity,But I the LORD God will chastise them all.3 I ^aknow Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from Me;For now, O Ephraim, you have played the prostitute and have worshiped idols;Israel has defiled itself.4 Their immoral practices will not permit themTo return to their God,For the ^aspirit of prostitution is within themAnd they ^bdo not know the LORD they do not recognize, appreciate, heed or cherish Him.5 But the ^apride and self-reliance of Israel testifies against him.Therefore Israel, and especially ¹Ephraim, stumble and fall in their wickedness and guilt;²^bJudah also has stumbled with them.6 They will ^ago with their flocks and with their herdsTo seek the LORD diligently searching for Him, but they will ^bnot find Him;He has ^cwithdrawn from them refusing to hear the prayers of the unrepentant.7 They have ^adealt treacherously against the LORD,For they have borne ^billegitimate (pagan) children.Now the ¹^cNew Moon will devour them along with their land bringing judgment and captivity.

8 ^aBlow the horn in ^bGibeah,The trumpet in Ramah the lofty hills on Benjamin’s northern border.Sound the alarm at Beth-aven:“^cBehind you and coming after you is the enemy, O Benjamin be on guard!”9 Ephraim will become a ^adesolation in the ^bday of rebuke;Among the tribes of Israel I ^cdeclare what is certain.10 The princes of Judah are like those who ¹^amove a boundary marker;I will ^bpour out My wrath on them ^clike an unrestrained flood of water. Deut 19:14; Prov 22:2811 Ephraim is ^aoppressed; he is broken and crushed by divine judgment,^bBecause he was determined to follow man’s command (¹vanities, filth, secular precepts) .12 Therefore I am like a ^amoth to EphraimAnd like dry rot to the house of Judah in My judgment against them.13 When Ephraim saw his sickness,And Judah his wound,Then Ephraim went to ^aAssyria instead of the LORDAnd sent to Assyria’s great ^bKing Jareb for help.But he ^ccannot heal youNor will he cure you of your wound received in judgment.14 For I will be ^alike a lion to EphraimAnd like a young lion to the house of Judah.^bI, even I, will tear to pieces and go on tearing;I will carry off the prey and there will be ^cno one to rescue them.15 I will go away and return to My place on highUntil they ^aacknowledge their offense and bear their guilt and seek My face;In their distress they will earnestly ^bseek Me, saying,

Yahweh Withdraws from Israel

Hear this, O priests!Give heed, O house of Israel!Give ear, O house of the king!For the judgment is for you,For you have been a ^asnare at MizpahAnd a net spread out on Tabor.2 And the ^arevolters have ^bdug deep into slaughtering,But I will chastise all of them.3 I ^aknow Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from Me;For now, O Ephraim, you have played the harlot;Israel has defiled itself.4 Their deeds will not allow themTo return to their God.For a ^aspirit of harlotry is within them,And they ^bdo not know Yahweh.5 Moreover, the ^apride of Israel answers against him,And Israel and Ephraim stumble in their iniquity;^bJudah also has stumbled with them.6 They will ^ago with their flocks and herdsTo seek Yahweh, but they will ^bnot find Him;He has ^cwithdrawn from them.7 They have ^adealt treacherously against Yahweh,For they have borne ^bchildren of strangers.Now the ^cnew moon will devour them with their portions.

8 ^aBlow the horn in ^bGibeah,The trumpet in Ramah.Make a loud shout at Beth-aven:“^cBehind you, Benjamin!”9 Ephraim will become a ^adesolation in the ^bday of reproof;Among the tribes of Israel I ^cwill make known what is true.10 The princes of Judah have become like those who ^amove a boundary;On them I will ^bpour out My wrath ^clike water.11 Ephraim is ^aoppressed, crushed in judgment,^bBecause he was determined to ¹walk after man’s command.12 Therefore I am like a ^amoth to EphraimAnd like rottenness to the house of Judah.13 Then Ephraim saw his sickness,And Judah his sore,So Ephraim went to ^aAssyriaAnd sent to ¹^bKing Jareb.But he is ^cunable to heal youOr to cure you of your sore.14 For I will be ^alike a lion to EphraimAnd like a young lion to the house of Judah.^bI, even I, will tear to pieces and go away;I will carry away, and there will be ^cnone to deliver.15 I will go away and return to My placeUntil they ¹^aacknowledge their guilt and seek My face;In their affliction they will ^bseek Me earnestly.

8 ^aBlow the horn in ^bGibeah,And the trumpet in Ramah.Sound an alarm at Beth-aven:“^cBehind you, Benjamin!”9 Ephraim will become a ^adesolation in the ^bday of rebuke;Among the tribes of Israel I ^cmake known what is trustworthy.10 The leaders of Judah have become like those who ^adisplace a boundary marker;On them I will ^bpour out My anger ^clike water.11 Ephraim is ^aoppressed, broken by judgment,^bBecause he was determined to follow ¹man’s command.12 Therefore I am like a ^amoth to Ephraim,And like rottenness to the house of Judah.13 When Ephraim saw his sickness,And Judah his ¹sore,Ephraim then went to ^aAssyriaAnd sent word to ²^bKing Jareb.But he is ^cunable to heal you,Or to cure you of your ³sore.14 For I will be ^alike a lion to EphraimAnd like a young lion to the house of Judah.^bI, yes I, will tear to pieces and go away,I will carry away, and there will be ^cno one to rescue.15 I will go away and return to My placeUntil they ¹^aacknowledge their guilt and seek My face;In their distress they will ^bsearch for Me.
